To simulcast a YouTube Live stream, send one program to YouTube and other destinations either from a local encoder that outputs to each platform or through a cloud relay that distributes one feed. Use a local setup when you want direct control and have enough computer capacity and upload bandwidth; use a relay when simpler routing and less load on your computer matter more.

What you need before simulcasting

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus a separate account for every other destination.
  • An encoder or relay that can route your program to those destinations.
  • The server address and stream key for each destination when your chosen setup requires them.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen routing method.

YouTube says a channel must be verified, live streaming must be enabled, and the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days. Enabling a first live stream can take at least 24 hours after the initial request, so do not leave setup until event day. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Make sure each destination account is active and in good standing. Check that platform’s current streaming instructions for account requirements, supported settings, and where to find its RTMP server URL and stream key. Requirements and interfaces can change.

Choose local outputs or a cloud relay

Consideration Local encoder outputs Cloud relay
How it routes Your computer encodes and sends a separate output to each destination. You send one encoded feed to a service, which forwards it to selected destinations.
Computer load Encoding and sending outputs use your computer’s processing and encoder capacity. YouTube describes relays as a way to reduce computer load because your computer sends one feed.
Upload capacity Plan for the combined target bitrate of all outputs, with headroom. Your connection sends one feed to the relay; the relay handles distribution.
Control and setup Offers direct control over outputs, but requires configuring and monitoring each destination. Can simplify routing, but requires connecting accounts or configuring the relay.
Best fit Useful when direct control matters and your hardware and connection can handle the outputs. YouTube describes relays as potentially useful for simpler setup, older computers, and plans with more than two channels.
Cost and limits Depends on your existing equipment, software, and destination-platform limits. A service may require a subscription; YouTube notes that free plans can have varying limitations. Check current terms with the provider.

This is a comparison of approaches based on YouTube’s simulstreaming guidance, not an independent performance test.

How to simulcast with a local encoder

  1. Enable YouTube Live in advance. Complete channel verification and live-stream setup, and allow at least 24 hours for a first activation. Confirm there is no live-streaming restriction on the channel.
  2. Confirm every destination. Sign in to each account and check that it is active and in good standing. For each platform, find its current ingest server URL and stream key, unless your encoder has an account connection that avoids manual entry.
  3. Choose an encoder routing setup. Configure a multi-output workflow that can send to YouTube and your other platforms. Check the encoder’s documentation for how to add outputs and whether they require separate encodes; do not assume every encoder has identical built-in multi-destination support.
  4. Create or select the YouTube live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the event and direct the encoder to that specific event using its stream details. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP, for delivery when supported. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
  5. Configure the other outputs. Enter each destination’s current server URL and stream key in the relevant encoder output. Keep keys private; use the destination’s account-linking option instead if your chosen software or relay supports it.
  6. Set a realistic bitrate budget. Add the target bitrates for all destinations. YouTube recommends upload capacity around 1.5–2 times that combined target. Its example is 6 Mbps plus 4 Mbps, for a 10 Mbps combined target and a recommended 15–20 Mbps upload capacity. This is guidance, not a guarantee; allow extra room for other traffic and connection variation.
  7. Test the complete route before the event. Run a test with motion and audio similar to the real program. Check that each destination receives the stream and that sound, picture, and timing are acceptable. Review YouTube Live Control Room’s messages and stream health, then adjust and test again if needed.
  8. Monitor during the broadcast. Keep an eye on YouTube’s stream-health messages and each destination’s status. A healthy YouTube ingest does not, by itself, confirm that every other platform is receiving the program correctly.

How to simulcast through a cloud relay

  1. Enable YouTube Live and prepare destination accounts. Apply the same channel eligibility checks and advance activation time as for a local setup.
  2. Choose a relay and verify its current terms. Confirm that it supports YouTube and the other specific destinations you need, and check its current plan limits before relying on it for an event. YouTube says cloud relays can make setup simpler and may suit plans with more than two channels.
  3. Connect or configure destinations. Follow the relay’s current instructions to connect platform accounts or provide the required server details and stream keys.
  4. Point your encoder at the relay or its selected YouTube event workflow. Send one encoded feed to the relay, using its setup instructions. For YouTube delivery, use RTMPS where the configured route supports it.
  5. Test and monitor the full path. Verify receipt at every destination, check audio and video, and review YouTube Live Control Room messages and stream health. The relay adds a routing step, so confirm its status as well as the platform endpoints.

A documented OBS and Restream workflow

Restream documents a workflow in which you connect channels in Restream, select Restream in OBS’s Stream settings, and start the broadcast from OBS; Restream says it distributes the feed to selected platforms. Its integration page names Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitch as examples of platforms it can pair with YouTube. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not an independent reliability assessment, and destination availability and plan limits should be checked before an event.

  1. Connect the channels you intend to use in Restream, following its current account-connection instructions.
  2. In OBS, open Settings > Stream and select Restream as the service, following Restream’s current setup guide.
  3. Start the broadcast from OBS and confirm that the feed appears on each selected destination and in YouTube Live Control Room.

See Restream’s OBS multistream instructions and its YouTube integration page for the vendor’s current workflow.

Limits, copyright, and event checks

Simultaneous YouTube streams

YouTube’s stated limits are 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key at the same time. These are simultaneous limits, not a recommendation to create several outputs for the same event; configure the stream key and event deliberately.

Copyright and destination rules

Simulcasting does not grant rights to music, game footage, or other material in your program. Make sure you have the rights or permissions required for the content and check the current rules of every destination. A stream accepted by one platform is not proof that another platform will accept it.

Before you go live

  • Confirm the YouTube event, encoder route, and each destination are set to the intended accounts.
  • Check that stream keys are current and have not been exposed.
  • Use a representative test with real audio and comparable on-screen motion.
  • Check upload capacity against the combined bitrate for local outputs, or confirm the single outgoing feed for a relay setup.
  • Know where to view YouTube Live Control Room messages and the relay or encoder’s output status.

Troubleshooting common simulcast problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube Live is unavailable Live streaming has not been enabled, verification is incomplete, a restriction applies, or the first activation is still processing. Review channel eligibility and activation status; allow at least 24 hours after the first enable request.
One destination is offline while others work That destination’s account, stream key, server URL, or platform requirements may be wrong or outdated. Check the account’s status and re-verify its current ingest details and requirements.
Local outputs drop frames or become unstable The computer may be overloaded, or total outbound bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity. Check encoder load and total target bitrate; compare available upload capacity with YouTube’s 1.5–2× recommendation and test under realistic network conditions.
A stream key is rejected The key may be incorrect, stale, or paired with the wrong event or destination. Recheck the selected event and destination details, then copy the current key from that platform’s live setup.
YouTube reports stream-health warnings The incoming feed may not match the configured settings or may be affected by network instability. Read the specific Live Control Room message, check encoder settings against YouTube’s current recommendations, and run another test before the event.
Relay receives a feed but a destination does not The destination connection or relay routing selection may be incomplete, or the service plan may not support the intended destination. Check the relay’s destination status, account connection, and current plan terms; verify that the correct channel is selected.
