How to Solve Difficult Puzzles in Order of the Sinking Star Without Getting Stuck

Identify the active character’s rule, test one idea at a time, undo risky moves, and switch areas when a puzzle stops teaching you anything.

When a puzzle in Order of the Sinking Star stops making sense, don’t guess an entire solution. Identify the active character’s rule, make one small move that tests a specific idea, observe what changes, and undo if it closes a useful route. If the board keeps producing the same dead end, move to another accessible area and return after learning more.

Start by identifying whose rules you are using

A move that works for one character may be wrong for another. A PlayStation Blog hands-on report by Corey Brotherson, published July 21, 2026, describes these abilities:

Character or mechanic What to check
Valens He pushes movable objects. Check which side of an object he must stand on to move it in the direction you need.
Tif She pulls objects. Ask whether moving away from an object, rather than toward it, is the action that shifts it.
Isidore He swaps places with objects along line of sight. Check whether the target is visible and whether the swap would leave the character or object in a useful position.
Other world abilities The hands-on report also describes beam powers and reflection swapping. Treat these as distinct rules to test, not as extensions of pushing or pulling.

These are reported mechanics, not a guarantee that every puzzle uses them in the same way. Before moving, say the rule you believe applies in one sentence: for example, “Tif pulls this object when she moves away from it.” If you cannot state what a move is supposed to do, pause and inspect the character, object, route, and goal again.

Use a small, deliberate solve loop

  1. Read the board. Identify the goal, the movable objects, visible hazards, narrow passages, and any character or world mechanic that may affect the route.
  2. Name one uncertainty. Decide what you need to learn: whether an object moves with a character, whether a line of sight is clear, or whether crossing a particular spot changes an object’s position.
  3. Make the smallest useful test. Choose a move that can distinguish between plausible explanations. Avoid committing to a full route when one step can tell you whether the rule works as you expect.
  4. Watch the result. Check the character’s position, the object’s position, and whether a passage or line of sight has changed. A move that technically works may still leave the puzzle less solvable.
  5. Undo when the test has served its purpose. The hands-on report notes that rewind or undo is useful when stuck. Use it to recover from a bad position or to reset after confirming a rule; do not assume a particular number of undos or a specific control scheme.
  6. Change approach if you learn nothing new. If several moves merely recreate the same failure, record the unresolved question and try another available puzzle or area.

Protect routes before moving blocks or crystals

In a block-moving puzzle, the danger is not only putting an object in the wrong place. It may also become impossible to approach it from the side needed for the next move, or it may block a narrow route. Preview coverage from PC Gamer described getting trapped by poorly positioned crystals and recovering with undo. Treat that as a useful warning about positioning, not proof that every move is irreversible.

  • Build Your Business – Upgrade your shop and attract more customers.
  • The Endless Vault – Take on tougher trials for greater rewards.
  • Before pushing or pulling, ask which side of the object you will need to reach next.
  • Check whether moving it will seal a passage, block a character’s route, or obstruct a line of sight.
  • After a move, reassess the board rather than continuing automatically. If the object’s new position rules out your intended next action, undo while the move is still easy to identify.
  • If you cannot tell whether a position is recoverable, test only when you have a clear way to undo or leave the puzzle.

Leave a dead end and return with new information

Getting stuck on one board does not have to end your progress. The developer’s official announcement describes freely backtracking to another region when a path proves difficult, and Brotherson’s hands-on report likewise describes moving to another area after hitting a wall. If another route is open, use it instead of repeating an experiment that has stopped teaching you anything.

When you come back, reconsider your earlier assumptions. The PlayStation Blog report describes character abilities and world mechanics combining, while Thekla’s announcement describes Gold Rooms linking worlds and pairing systems such as light beams and mirrors. A familiar object or character may therefore be part of a larger interaction than the one you first tested.

Keep a short record of what you have learned

For a puzzle you plan to revisit, note only the information that will prevent you from repeating unhelpful tests:

  • Character and rule: who was active, and what their action did.
  • Object and result: what you moved or targeted, and what changed.
  • Route risk: which position blocked access, a passage, or a line of sight.
  • Open question: the one interaction you still need to understand.

This keeps a return visit focused without writing out a complete solution or spoiling the puzzle for yourself.

What is confirmed about the game’s scope and release

As of October 7, 2026, the listed launch date is October 8, 2026. Thekla’s Steam listing gives the puzzle count as “more than one thousand handcrafted puzzles,” while the July 21, 2026 PlayStation Blog hands-on report says “900+ levels.” Those are different source descriptions using different terms; neither establishes a directly comparable count. Thekla’s announcement names PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5.

This guidance draws on pre-release descriptions, not a verified launch-day build. A PC Gamer preview published December 12, 2025, reported unlimited undos, but that preview observation does not establish the undo limit or behavior in the released version. The available sources also do not establish a current in-game hint system, so this guide does not assume one.
