Sweep every object, read labels and notes, check your inventory, and test which item or mechanism answers the current objective. If the chain still will not click, use one in-game hint or consult only the next step of a room-specific walkthrough. Save a full solution for the final resort, then replay the room if you want to improve your grade.
This approach separates two goals that are easy to confuse: learning what the puzzle expects and finishing with the best possible score. The first clear can teach you the route; a later clear lets you execute it cleanly.

Start with the room, not a search engine
Escape Academy is built around environmental clues. Objects, labels, collected items and interactive mechanisms often form a sequence rather than acting as isolated riddles. Before looking up an answer, make the room itself your evidence.
Do a deliberate sweep
Move around the entire space and look at every surface that can be examined. Check desks, walls, lockers, displays, containers, signs and anything that changes when you interact with it. A clue can be easy to miss when you only inspect objects that appear obviously puzzle-like.

Read wording exactly
Numbers, arrows, colors, initials and unusual wording are usually more useful than a vague visual impression. Re-read labels after you collect a new item: a prop that seemed decorative may identify the lock, order or location that item belongs to.
Connect evidence into a chain
Ask three questions for every clue: what does it describe, where could it be used, and what new information should it produce? A note may identify a symbol set; the symbols may open a locker; the locker may contain the tool that reveals the next clue. Thinking in links prevents random trial-and-error.
Know what your score is measuring
Levels are timed, and Gameranx’s guide says that using hints or failing to finish within the limit lowers the score. It presents completing the level under the time limit without hints as the route to an A+ result. That makes a blind first attempt a poor time to chase perfection: an early hint can teach the intended logic, while a replay lets you apply it faster.

The 9Puz walkthrough recommends reading only the objective and the next one or two key answers on a first clear, then using the room notes when the chain remains unclear. That is a useful compromise: you get direction without turning the entire level into a set of instructions.
A step-by-step rescue procedure
- Restate the current objective. Say what the game is asking you to obtain, open, decode or reach. Do not try to solve every visible object at once.
- Inventory your evidence. List the items you have collected and the symbols, colors, words or numbers you have recorded. Separate observations from guesses.
- Sweep the room again. Use a consistent route so you do not repeatedly skip the same corner. Recheck objects after every major interaction.
- Classify the obstacle. Decide whether you are facing a key-and-lock problem, a code, a sequence, a matching task, a route, a hidden clue or a decoding step. The category suggests what evidence matters.
- Test one relationship at a time. Apply an item to the mechanism it most clearly describes. If nothing changes, note that result instead of cycling through every item.
- Write down state changes. Record which symbols light up, which doors open and which numbers you have ruled out. Memory is unreliable when the timer is running.
- Take a minimal hint if the chain stops. Use the in-game hint only after you can explain what you have already tried. A nudge is more useful when you know which link is missing.
- Escalate to the relevant walkthrough subsection. Read the objective and the next step, not the entire page. Stop as soon as you can continue independently.
- Finish, then decide whether to replay. Treat the first completion as route learning. If the grade matters, restart the room with the sequence fresh and aim to execute it without extra help.
How to diagnose a broken clue chain
You have a code but no obvious keypad
Look for a container or panel whose visual language matches the code. A number sequence may belong to a dial, while symbols may belong to a locker or panel. Check labels and nearby objects before entering combinations at random.

You have an item that appears useless
Rotate your search rather than discarding it. Ask whether the item reveals information, changes what you can see, or belongs to a mechanism that has not yet been activated. Revisit rooms and surfaces after opening a new area.
Several clues seem to contradict one another
Separate clue types. One piece may tell you the order, another the values, and a third the location. Do not combine every number on the wall into one code simply because they are visible together.
A mechanism accepts an input but nothing happens
Check whether the input needs a specific order, orientation or completion condition. A partially solved mechanism can look correct while still waiting for another step elsewhere in the room.

You keep running out of time
Stop experimenting with combinations you cannot justify. On the next attempt, use your notes to move directly between confirmed clue and mechanism. If necessary, take a hint to learn the missing connection, finish the room, and reserve optimization for replay.
Final exam: spoiler-heavy reference
Warning: the following section gives concrete solutions from the final-level guide covered by GameSpot. Read it only if you are stuck in that room or have decided that preserving discovery is less important than moving forward.
Reveal the hidden drawings
The sequence begins with a pair of glasses. Use them to expose drawings that are not apparent during an ordinary inspection. This is a reminder that an apparently ordinary object can be a clue-revealing tool rather than a key for a lock.
Use the locker symbols for the safe
The symbols found on the lockers provide the safe combination. The guide gives the dial movement as left to 10, right to 25, left to 15. Enter the turns in that order rather than treating the three numbers as a keypad code.
Work through the answer sheets and chamber
After the safe sequence, the room shifts to answer-sheet and chamber puzzles. Treat each sheet as evidence for the next interaction and verify which answer belongs to which part of the chamber; do not assume that every visible answer is entered in the order you found it.

Route the tiles
The final-level guide also includes a tile-routing puzzle. Plan the complete path before committing to moves when possible. If a move changes the available route, record the new state instead of repeating the same branch.
Decode the Morse-code pillars
The room ends with pillars that use Morse code. Translate the signals systematically, keeping separators and order intact. Entering an attractive-looking word without confirming the sequence is the fastest way to lose time at this stage.

A walkthrough is most useful when it answers the exact question blocking you. On a first clear, open the room’s objective and one or two subsequent answers, then return to the game. This preserves the satisfying parts of searching and lets you discover how the mechanism works.
If the chain is still unclear, consult the room notes rather than jumping to a complete solution. The 9Puz guide is dated July 12, 2026 and organizes advice around room objectives; its detailed coverage of Escape from the Past is limited to Old Rivals. Do not assume a guide’s coverage of one DLC room applies to every other room.

Replay strategy for grade cleanup
After you know the route, replay the room from the beginning. Keep your notes outside the game, move directly between the evidence and the mechanism, and avoid exploratory inputs that you already know are unnecessary. The 9Puz walkthrough specifically recommends replaying rooms after learning a route when pursuing A+ cleanup and avoiding hints.
Use the replay to identify the cause of any lost time: a missed visual clue, an unnecessary detour, a slow decoding step or an incorrect interaction. Fix one cause per attempt rather than changing the whole route without knowing what failed.
Platform and version cautions
GameSpot lists Escape Academy on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X. That listing establishes the platforms covered by the page; it does not establish that every format is a physical edition or that puzzle mechanics are identical across current builds.
