How to solve the June 9 puzzle
Start with PASTE, PRINT, QUIT, and SAVE: each works as a computer command. Then connect BOOK, ORDER, REQUEST, and RESERVE as ways to secure something in advance. CREW, FAMILY, RING, and SYNDICATE fit the crime-organization theme. The four words left over rely on wordplay: each is a spelling-bee rank with one letter removed.

What made the grid tricky
BOOK, ORDER, RING, FAMILY, and CREW all have multiple everyday meanings, so a word can appear to fit more than one possible group. The computer-command set and the advance-planning set offer clearer starting points; after those are placed, the crime-organization words and the spelling-rank wordplay account for the remaining entries.
