Connections #366 answers for June 11, 2024
The 16 words split into these four groups:
| Category | Words | Connection |
|---|---|---|
| Homophones | BI, BUY, BY, BYE | Each is pronounced the same as another word in the group, despite its different spelling and meaning. |
| Muscles, informally | AB, PEC, QUAD, TRI | These are shortened forms for muscle groups or muscles. |
| Music genres | DUB, EMO, POP, TRAP | Each word names a music genre. |
| Settings on an appliance knob | HI, LO, MED, OFF | These are familiar control positions on an appliance dial. |
The full board was HI, BYE, TRI, BI, TRAP, AB, POP, OFF, DUB, MED, BUY, QUAD, LO, EMO, PEC, and BY.
How to spot the four connections
Listen for the homophones
BI, BUY, BY, and BYE form the wordplay group: the entries share pronunciations across different spellings and meanings. With short words, it is easy to focus only on what they mean or how they look. Saying them aloud can reveal a connection that is invisible on the page.
Recognize shortened muscle names
AB, PEC, QUAD, and TRI are informal forms associated with muscles. AB, PEC, and TRI are clipped forms; QUAD is a common short name for the quadriceps. Their brevity can make them look like fragments or prefixes, so ask whether each entry is a familiar abbreviation or shortened term before treating the letters as a pattern.
#1 Best Overall
Group the music genres
DUB, EMO, POP, and TRAP belong together as music genres. This is a category based on what the terms name, not on their shared length or spelling.
Save the appliance settings
HI, LO, MED, and OFF fit together as positions commonly marked on an appliance knob. Once the other groups are accounted for, the control-setting labels make a coherent final set.

A useful solving approach for this board
- Check pronunciation as well as meaning; a sound-based connection can link words with different spellings.
- Look for a complete category rather than assuming short entries are prefixes or letter fragments.
- Consider common shortened forms, including informal anatomy terms such as AB and PEC.
- Test HI, LO, MED, and OFF together as control settings instead of leaving them as unrelated short words.
TechRadar’s Marc McLaren reported first considering prefix combinations before recognizing the homophones and music styles. That is one solver’s account, not a measure of the puzzle’s difficulty. TechRadar’s June 11, 2024 guide and Try Hard Guides’ June 11, 2024 answers report the same four groups.
