Record room locations as you explore, then use the board’s light-up feedback to confirm each placement. There is no single fixed coordinate solution because the layout changes between runs.
How the Precipice chess puzzle works
This is a room-location puzzle, not a chess checkmate problem. The manor’s estate grid corresponds to the chessboard: find a room that contains a particular piece, note that room’s grid position, and place the matching piece on that square in the Precipice. A correct square lights up. The piece’s color does not matter, according to the Blue Prince wiki.

Two routes to the Underground chamber are described by GameSpot’s guide: activate all four Blue Flames on the Grounds to reveal an elevator route, or drain the Fountain and use the mine tunnel’s candle altar with an item that can light candles. Use whichever route you have already unlocked.

Place all six pieces using your current manor draft
- Track piece-bearing rooms as you draft. Whenever you find a room containing one or more chess pieces, record its position on the estate grid. The manor layout changes between runs, so coordinates from another run will not serve as a fixed answer.
- Make sure every piece type has a matching room. The board needs a drafted room for each of the six types—Pawn, Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen, and King—to register the complete solution.
- Go to the Precipice chessboard. Place each piece on the square matching the position of a room containing that piece. Watch for the square to light up, which confirms a correct placement.
- Check alternate rooms if a type appears more than once. GameSpot says the first matching room drafted is the recorded location. If that square does not light up, try another matching room’s position and use the board’s feedback to identify the accepted square.
- Complete all six placements. Once the puzzle is solved, the game reveals the chess powers and lets you select one.
Which rooms can contain each piece?
The guides do not give completely identical room lists. Treat these as reported possibilities, not an exhaustive or guaranteed list for every run; your current room grid and the board’s feedback determine the solution.

For a practical order, try pieces with fewer reported room candidates before the Pawn, which has the longest candidate list. This is only a way to reduce searching: the light-up signal, not the list, confirms a square.

What solving the puzzle unlocks
GameSpot lists six powers: Ambition of the Pawn, Resilience of the Rook, Piety of the Bishop, Mantle of the Knight, Gambit of the Queen, and Banner of the King. Its guide says the selected power persists through multiple runs until changed. To change it, solve the puzzle again and choose another power. Read the in-game descriptions for the current effects.
