Why GUESS can be easy to miss
The word follows a CVVCC pattern: G, U, E, S, S. The final S is repeated, which can be overlooked if you assume each letter appears only once. When a clue points to a letter in the word, test whether it could occur again rather than ruling out a duplicate automatically. Xfire’s dated page also identifies the doubled letter as a difficulty.

These counts describe Kain’s retrospective solve, not a typical result or an optimal route for every player. Xfire names SLATE and SOARE as strong opening examples for this puzzle; Kain says his own opening guess was SLATE. They are examples, not universal best starters.

In his December 10, 2025 guide, Forbes Senior Contributor Erik Kain describes Wordle as a daily puzzle in which the goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. A green tile marks a letter in the correct position; yellow means the letter is in the word but in a different position; gray means it is not in the word.
