To create items server-side, run TShock (or another server tool that implements equivalent functionality), authenticate with the appropriate permission, and use /item (also /i) for yourself or /give for another player. The commands accept item names, optional quantities, and quoted names for multi-word items.

First determine which server you are running
The command you need depends on the server software, not merely on the Terraria game version. A player connected to a vanilla dedicated server cannot make TShock commands appear by typing them into chat; TShock must actually be installed and running as the server layer.

| Vanilla dedicated server | No item-spawn or item-give command appears in the documented console command list. | Use the administrative commands that are available, such as ban, password, version, time, port, maxplayers, say, and motd. These do not create inventory items. |
Vanilla server operator or console access, depending on the command. |
| TShock server | Yes. TShock documents /item (alias /i) and /give. |
Spawn an item for yourself or give one to a named player. | The relevant TShock permission node must be assigned to your user or group. |
| Another server tool | Varies by tool and version. | Follow that tool’s own command and permission documentation rather than assuming TShock syntax. | Tool-specific. |
If you can run version or other basic vanilla console commands but /item returns an unknown-command error, that is expected on an unmodified server. It is not usually a typo or a missing Terraria setting.
What you need before using TShock item commands
A TShock server, not just a TShock client
TShock must be installed as the server software or server wrapper. Every connected player still uses the normal Terraria client, but command handling and permissions come from the TShock server. Restart the server after installing or updating it, then connect to that TShock instance.

An authenticated administrator or permitted group
Log in or authenticate through TShock’s normal account and group system before attempting to spawn anything. Having a Terraria character named “admin” does not by itself grant rights. The account or group must have the command permission explicitly assigned.
The correct permission nodes
tshock.item.spawnpermits the/itemcommand (and its/ialias) for spawning an item for the authorized user.tshock.item.givepermits/give, which targets another player.tshock.item.usebannedcontrols access to items that TShock’s banned-item policy blocks. Possessing the first two permissions does not automatically bypass that policy.
Assign only the permissions needed for the job. A moderator who should hand out ordinary building materials may not need permission to use banned items, and a player who can spawn for themselves does not automatically need the ability to give items to everyone else.
Spawn an item for yourself with /item or /i
After authentication, enter the command in chat or in the TShock interface that accepts player commands:
/item <item name> [quantity]
/i <item name> [quantity]
Use the full item display name when possible. The quantity is optional. If you omit it, TShock uses the item’s maximum stack size. That default can be much larger or smaller than the amount you intended, so include an explicit number when the exact count matters.
Examples
/item torch 20spawns 20 torches for the authenticated user./i wood 999requests 999 wood, subject to the item’s stack rules and the server’s handling of the command./i "dirt wall" 100handles a multi-word item name by enclosing the name in quotation marks.
The alias /i is simply a shorter way to invoke the same self-spawn command; it does not grant different rights or bypass item restrictions.
How name matching works
TShock can resolve a partial item name only when that fragment identifies one item. A short fragment that matches several items is ambiguous and will fail or ask you to be more specific. Prefer an exact display name, and quote names containing spaces. Quotation marks belong around the item name, not around the quantity.
Give an item to another player with /give
Use /give when the item should be delivered to someone else:
/give <item name> <player name> [quantity]
Examples
/give torch Builder 40gives 40 torches to the player whose name resolves toBuilder./give "dirt wall" Builder 100gives a multi-word item name using quotes./give potion Builderomits quantity, so TShock uses that item’s maximum stack size.
Use the player’s exact in-game name when names are similar. If a partial player name is accepted by your TShock build, it still must resolve to one player; an ambiguous match is unsafe and should be replaced with the full name.

Understand where a given item appears
TShock’s delivery behavior depends on the server’s SSC (Server Side Characters) configuration and the GiveItemsDirectly option.
| SSC and option state | Observed delivery behavior | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
SSC enabled and GiveItemsDirectly enabled |
TShock attempts to insert given items directly into the recipient’s inventory. | The documentation labels this behavior experimental and warns that it may not work correctly or may cause item loss. |
| SSC not enabled | Given items spawn as dropped items in the world rather than being inserted directly into inventory. | The recipient must collect the drop, and normal world pickup conditions apply. |
| Direct insertion not enabled | Items are not silently guaranteed to appear in a player’s inventory; they follow the server’s configured delivery behavior, commonly as drops. | Check the active configuration instead of assuming a successful command means an inventory change. |
For valuable or irreplaceable items, watch the recipient’s inventory or the drop location after issuing /give. Avoid enabling experimental direct insertion on a production world without a backup and a recovery plan.
Use item IDs as a lookup aid, not as a vanilla command
Terraria’s official item-ID table lists numeric IDs, display names, and internal names used by the game. It is useful when two items have similar names, when a plugin configuration asks for an ID, or when you need to verify the exact item represented by a name.
An ID table does not add an item command to a vanilla server, and looking up an ID does not grant permission. TShock’s documented command form is based on an item name and optional quantity. If a particular TShock release or add-on documents numeric-ID input, follow that release’s syntax; do not assume that every server accepts a number in place of a name.
When a command fails, first verify the display name and spelling shown by the server’s item data. Internal names and display names are not always identical, and an ID copied from a different Terraria version or mod list may identify a different object or nothing at all.
A safe, repeatable procedure
- Identify the server software. Check the startup banner, control panel, or console. If it is vanilla, stop: there is no documented built-in item-spawn command.
- Confirm the Terraria and TShock versions. TShock commands and item data must be compatible with the server build. Do not copy a command syntax from a different major release without checking its documentation.
- Back up the world. A backup is especially important before testing direct inventory insertion, banned-item access, or large quantities.
- Authenticate your account. Sign in through TShock’s account and group system and confirm that the account, not merely the character name, has administrative status.
- Check permissions. Grant
tshock.item.spawnfor self-spawning,tshock.item.givefor giving to others, andtshock.item.usebannedonly when your server policy requires access to banned items. - Test with a harmless, low-value item. Use a small explicit quantity, such as
/i torch 5, so that an error is easy to diagnose and any unexpected stack is limited. - Use an exact name. Quote names with spaces and avoid ambiguous partial names.
- Choose the command’s scope. Use
/itemor/ifor yourself; use/givewith a player name for someone else. - Verify delivery. Check the inventory when direct insertion is configured, or locate and pick up the dropped item when SSC is disabled or direct insertion is not active.
- Record the change. For a shared server, note who used the command, which item was created, and why. This makes rollbacks and moderation decisions easier.
Troubleshoot an item command that does not work
“Unknown command” or no response
You are probably connected to a vanilla server, a different server instance, or a TShock installation that did not load correctly. Confirm the server process and startup output, then reconnect after TShock is running. A client-side mod cannot add server authority to a vanilla instance.
“You do not have permission”
Check the exact node required by the command. /item needs tshock.item.spawn; /give needs tshock.item.give. Confirm that the account is authenticated and that the permission was assigned to the group the account actually belongs to. If the item is blocked, the separate banned-item policy may require tshock.item.usebanned.
Rank #3
The item name is rejected
Use the item’s display name, correct spelling, and quotation marks for multi-word names. Expand a partial name until it resolves to exactly one item. Check whether you accidentally supplied an internal name, a modded name unavailable on this server, or an ID copied from another version.
The command runs but creates the wrong amount
Specify the quantity explicitly. Omitting it invokes the item’s maximum stack size, which is not a universal default such as 1 or 999. Also check the item’s own stack limit; a requested amount may be split across stacks or constrained by the server’s item handling.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
/i works but /give fails
This normally indicates that the account has self-spawn permission but lacks tshock.item.give. Ask an administrator to grant the second permission if your role is supposed to distribute items.
The recipient cannot find the item
Look on the ground near the player when SSC is disabled or direct insertion is not enabled. If direct insertion is enabled with SSC, inspect the recipient’s inventory and server logs. Because direct insertion is documented as experimental, restore the backup and disable that option if testing reveals missing or lost items.
A banned item is blocked
That result can be intentional. Review the server’s banned-item policy before granting tshock.item.usebanned. Removing a protection may allow items that destabilize progression or create moderation problems, so make the change only for a defined administrative purpose.

Keep item spawning separate from normal player permissions
Grant item permissions to a small, trusted group. Self-spawn and give-to-others are separate capabilities, so assign them independently. Do not grant banned-item access merely to solve a routine building-material request.
Protect the world before testing
Large quantities, rare progression items, and experimental direct insertion can change a shared world permanently. Make a dated world backup, test with a disposable character or low-value item, and keep the server console available so you can stop the process if repeated commands or a plugin loop appear.

Use explicit quantities and document exceptions
Explicit counts prevent accidental maximum-stack grants. A short administrative log containing the operator, recipient, item, quantity, and reason gives players a transparent explanation for unusual inventory changes and helps identify abuse.
Remember that commands do not bypass every rule
Permissions, banned-item settings, stack limits, SSC behavior, and the installed server version all remain relevant. A successful command means the server accepted the request; it does not by itself prove that the item was inserted into the intended inventory or that the resulting item is appropriate for the world.

Vanilla server alternatives and limits
If you intentionally want to remain on the vanilla dedicated server, you can use its documented administrative console for server management, communication, player bans, passwords, time, ports, player limits, and the message of the day. Those controls do not provide an item-generation mechanism. Adding a client mod, changing a character locally, or consulting an item-ID list does not change that server-side limitation.
To obtain server-side item commands while keeping administrative control, migrate or start the world under TShock and configure permissions before inviting players. Treat the migration as a server change: verify world compatibility, retain the original world backup, test commands privately, and tell players whether items will appear in inventories or as drops.
Common questions
Can I use /item on a normal Terraria server?
Not on the documented vanilla dedicated server. The command is provided by TShock or another server tool that implements it.

On TShock, it is /give <item name> <player name> [quantity], and it requires tshock.item.give.
What does omitting the quantity do?
TShock uses the item’s maximum stack size for both documented item-giving forms when quantity is omitted. Enter a number when you need a controlled amount.
Why do names with spaces fail?
Enclose the complete multi-word name in quotation marks, for example /i "dirt wall". An unquoted name is parsed as separate arguments.
Are numeric item IDs enough to spawn an item?
No. IDs are reference data. You still need a server tool that provides an item command and the permission to use it; follow that tool’s documented input format.

With SSC disabled, TShock gives items as dropped objects. Direct insertion requires SSC and the GiveItemsDirectly option, which the documentation describes as experimental and potentially capable of causing item loss.
