The strongest repeatable choice for many players is Glamour Prisms if they regularly fill the glamour dresser. A specific crafting or housing material is better when it completes a project you already plan to make. Everything else should be checked against your current quartermaster stock, rank requirements, seal price, and alternatives before you exchange.
What to buy first: match the exchange to a real use
Grand Company seals are most valuable when they remove a purchase or task you were going to do anyway. Spend them in this order:

- Buy a repeat-consumption item you use immediately. Glamour Prisms fit this rule for players who store outfits often.
- Fund a defined crafting, gathering, or housing project. A material that finishes a recipe has more practical value than a stack that sits in storage.
- Use convenience items when their time savings matter to your play routine. Historical quartermaster lists include food, tools, crafting equipment, and aetheryte tickets, but availability and prices vary by rank and Grand Company.
- Hold the balance when you have no plan. A full-looking seal balance is not a problem by itself; spending into inventory clutter can leave you short when a high-priority exchange appears.
The live exchange window in your own Grand Company is the authority for current stock, cost, and rank eligibility. Older patch notes are useful for understanding the kinds of items that have appeared, but they are not a current price list.

Glamour Prisms: the safest repeat purchase for glamour-focused players
Why prisms are useful
One Glamour Prism is consumed for each item you place into the glamour dresser. If you frequently store new weapons, armor pieces, or seasonal outfits, prisms convert seals directly into a resource you will repeatedly consume instead of a material you may never use. Official game guidance lists Grand Company Seal Exchange as one acquisition route, alongside other ways to obtain prisms.
#1 Best Overall
- Adventure awaits you beyond the horizon in FINAL FANTASY XIV.
- This product is a digital 60-Day Game Time Card for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. It serves as a payment option that allows players to add 60 days of game time to their FFXIV account at the Standard subscription rate, subject to account limits. Both the game and game time are required to play.
- This product can be redeemed on service accounts registered with the Windows, Mac, PlayStation, or Steam versions of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. However, it cannot be redeemed on service accounts that have only the XBOX or Nintendo Switch 2 versions registered.
This is a particularly good sink when your glamour routine is regular: you can buy only the number needed for the next batch of items, keep a modest reserve, and return to the quartermaster when it runs low. It is less attractive if you rarely change outfits or already obtain prisms through another routine at no meaningful cost to you.
How to decide how many to buy
- Count the items you intend to put into the dresser during your next storage session.
- Add a small buffer only if you routinely acquire event gear, raid drops, or leveling upgrades for glamour.
- Do not buy a large stock merely because seals are near a personal storage limit; prisms still occupy inventory space and can be acquired through other official routes.
Historical price example
Patch 4.1 documentation listed Glamour Prisms at 200 seals and Glamour Dispellers at 200 seals. Those figures describe that patch-era exchange, not a guaranteed current price. Open the quartermaster’s Glamour or Materials category and confirm today’s cost before committing seals.
Materials for a project: the best targeted use
Crafting materials
A seal exchange can be efficient when it supplies a component you need for a known recipe and the alternative would require a lengthy gathering trip, a separate currency, or a higher market-board price. Start with the finished item you want to craft, list every required component, and identify which of those components the quartermaster actually sells. Buy only the shortfall.
Historical official notes give examples of rank-gated materials such as Glass Fiber and Quick-hardening Sealant. Patch 4.2 listed Quick-hardening Sealant at 2,300 seals and Glass Fiber at 7,000 seals. These are dated examples; neither number should be treated as a live exchange quote. The current quartermaster may have changed the item, price, or required Grand Company rank.
Housing materials
Housing projects often need a precise quantity of an awkward component. A seal purchase can make sense when it lets you finish a furnishing now, especially if the material is inconvenient to gather and you have no better use for the seals. Check the furnishing recipe first, then compare the seal cost with the material’s current price on your data center’s market board if you would otherwise buy it with gil.
Rank #2
- Access to all expansion content from Heavensward and Stormblood, unlocking additional jobs, areas, story quests and more ways to explore: flying, swimming and diving
- A flexible class system that allows players to switch freely between a variety of classes and jobs, including new additions red mage and samurai, and reach the new level cap of level 70
- All the hallmarks of the FINAL FANTASY franchise, including an engaging storyline, genre-leading graphics, and HD real time cut scenes.
- Robust gameplay features such as player-managed Free Companies, diverse party finder features to group up with other players with ease, and a variety of fun activities in the Gold Saucer area, all designed to accommodate a dynamic player community.
- Challenging trials, dungeons and raids for groups of up to 24, and exciting player-vs-player (PvP) content for groups of up to 72 players
Do not stockpile housing materials without a plot, room, workshop, or furnishing plan. Housing designs change, demolition or relocation can alter priorities, and a warehouse full of speculative components ties up inventory while your seals could remain flexible.
Project test before exchanging
- Write down the exact recipe or furnishing and the quantity still missing.
- Check the quartermaster for the item, current seal price, and rank requirement.
- Check your retainers and existing storage so you do not duplicate materials.
- Compare the seal purchase with gathering, crafting, or market-board alternatives.
- Exchange only the quantity needed, plus a deliberate amount for a project you will start soon.
Other quartermaster categories worth checking
Official patch notes have documented Grand Company exchanges for more than prisms and raw materials. Historical examples include food, tools, crafting gear, glamour items, and an aetheryte ticket. These categories can be useful, but their value depends heavily on your character’s level, jobs, and normal travel or crafting routine.

| Category | When it can be a good buy | What to verify now |
|---|---|---|
| Glamour items | You are actively storing appearances or need a specific glamour utility item. | Current item list, prism or dispeller cost, and whether your rank unlocks it. |
| Food | You will consume it during leveling, crafting, gathering, or combat and do not already have a cheaper supply. | Stats, duration, quantity received, expiration or obsolescence risk, and current seal price. |
| Tools and crafting gear | The item is an immediate upgrade or fills a gear slot you cannot otherwise cover. | Job, level, item level, durability or spiritbond implications, and whether a quest or vendor provides it more cheaply. |
| Aetheryte tickets | You teleport frequently and the ticket meaningfully reduces your gil spending. | Ticket quantity per exchange, destination restrictions, and current seal cost. |
| Crafting or housing materials | You have a recipe or furnishing queued and the material is the bottleneck. | Current recipe quantity, rank gate, seal price, and market-board alternative. |
Because quartermaster inventories are not identical at every rank or Grand Company, this table is a decision guide rather than a promise that every character can see every category.
How to compare seal purchases without a universal “best value”
There is no official comparative figure that assigns a universal gil value per seal. Your best exchange changes with supply, job progression, project timing, and the alternatives available on your data center. Use the following five checks for every candidate item.
1. Personal consumption
Give priority to items you will consume or equip soon. A prism used today, or a material that completes a furnishing this week, is more useful than a theoretically valuable item that remains in a retainer indefinitely.
Rank #3
- A new adventure awaits in Norvrandt
- New jobs, including gun breaker and dancer
- New playable races: Viera and Hrothgar
- Level cap increase from 70 to 80
- New cities to explore: The Crystarium and Eulmore
2. Live seal cost and rank gate
Read both values in the quartermaster window. Historical notes can show that an item existed, but they cannot establish its current price or whether it is unlocked for your rank. If the exchange is unavailable, do not assume that promotion alone will make it appear; check the current Grand Company requirements in game.
3. Alternative acquisition
Ask whether you can craft, gather, quest for, or otherwise earn the same item with less time or a currency you have in greater supply. Glamour Prisms, for example, have official acquisition routes besides Grand Company seals. A seal exchange is strongest when it saves a scarce resource or removes a task you would otherwise delay.
4. Inventory and timing
Seals remain flexible until spent. Materials do not. Keep enough inventory space for normal play and avoid converting a liquid currency into stacks you may not touch before your next project or rank milestone.
5. Local market value
If the alternative is buying with gil, check your own data center’s market board rather than relying on a guide’s old price. Prices can differ by world and change after patches, events, or new crafting demand. A high seal cost may still be sensible for a material you need immediately, but the market comparison tells you what convenience is costing.
Step-by-step: checking the current exchange before spending
- Travel to your Grand Company headquarters. Speak with the relevant Personnel Officer or quartermaster and open the current Seal Exchange menu.
- Confirm your balance. Note the number of seals available, then leave room for any purchase you may need for an active quest, delivery, or project.
- Browse every unlocked category. Record the item name, quantity received, seal cost, and any displayed rank requirement. Do not rely on a screenshot or an old patch note.
- Check your inventory and retainers. Search for duplicates before buying materials, food, prisms, or tickets.
- Inspect the intended use. Open the recipe, furnishing list, glamour plan, or gear comparison that caused you to consider the exchange.
- Compare alternatives. Check gathering time, crafting requirements, quest rewards, other currencies, and the local market board where a gil purchase is possible.
- Buy the smallest useful quantity. Reopen the inventory afterward to confirm the item arrived and that you still have space for normal activities.
Use the Timers interface to plan around supply missions
If you are deciding whether to spend seals or prepare items for your Grand Company, the game’s Timers interface can show upcoming supply and provisioning requests. The documented path is Duty → Timers → Individual → Next Mission Allowance. Checking that screen before turning in items can help you identify what your Grand Company will request next and avoid spending seals on a material you could instead submit for a useful delivery.

Rank gates, caps, and patch-note pitfalls
Rank requirements
Some exchanges are restricted by Grand Company rank. The historical Glass Fiber and Quick-hardening Sealant examples were documented with rank requirements, so a character at a lower rank may not see the same options as a promoted character. The quartermaster’s current UI is the reliable place to verify eligibility.
The seals-cap question
Patch 4.4 notes documented an increase to 90,000 company seals upon promotion to captain. That is a historical change, not confirmation of the current cap in every present-day version or rank structure. Do not plan a purchase around 90,000 as a guaranteed modern limit; check the cap displayed by your character’s current currency interface.
Why old lists go wrong
- Patch notes record what was added or changed in one update, not the complete inventory today.
- An item can remain in a guide after its cost, category, or rank requirement changes.
- Different Grand Companies and ranks can expose different exchanges.
- Market-board prices and crafting demand move independently of seal costs.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying because the balance feels too high
A large balance is not wasted currency. Spending without a use can create clutter and remove your ability to respond to a new project. Set a personal reserve and exchange only above it when you have a reason.

Using historical prices as current math
Numbers such as 200 seals for a Glamour Prism, 2,300 for Quick-hardening Sealant, 7,000 for Glass Fiber, and 10,000 for Ballroom Etiquette – Reflection are useful examples of past exchange pricing. They are not a basis for present-day value calculations. Read the current price at the moment of purchase.
Best Value
- Increased level cap from 50 to 60
- Dark Knight: Tank - Wields a two-handed greatsword and the power of darkness to deal damage to their foes
- Astrologian: Healer - Tap the power of the stars to cast potent healing magicks, while drawing energies from constellation-based divining cards to support your party
- Machinist: DPS - Deal damage from afar using a combination of firearms enhanced with various attachments, and mechanical turrets deployed on the battlefield
- Included in this expansion pack is a new race called The Au Ra, a new City-State - Ishgard, new Primals Bismarck and Ravana, and Flying Mounts
Ignoring quantities received
An exchange may grant one item or a bundle. Compare the total quantity delivered, not merely the headline seal price, and verify whether the bundle fits your actual recipe requirement.
Filling retainers with speculative materials
Materials have opportunity cost. If you cannot name the recipe, furnishing, or delivery that will use a stack, leave the seals unspent or choose a compact consumable you already know you need.
Forgetting alternative prism sources
Prisms are an excellent repeat purchase for glamour users, but they are not exclusive to Grand Company exchanges. If another route is already part of your routine, reserve seals for a project material or convenience item instead.
A practical decision tree
- Do you store glamour items regularly? Buy the number of Glamour Prisms needed for your next storage sessions, after checking the live price.
- Do you have a named crafting or housing project? Buy only the quartermaster materials that complete that project, then compare the exchange with gathering or market-board cost.
- Do you have frequent travel, crafting, or combat consumption? Inspect tickets, food, tools, or gear and choose one that replaces a purchase you would otherwise make soon.
- Are you considering an item because a guide calls it “best”? Verify current stock, rank, price, quantity, and alternatives in your own exchange before buying.
- Do none of these apply? Keep the seals. Flexibility is more useful than an arbitrary stockpile.
Examples by player situation
Glamour collector
You acquire dungeon and event gear every week and store most of it. Prisms are the direct match: estimate the next storage batch, buy that quantity, and keep a small reserve rather than filling every inventory slot.
Crafter with a scheduled delivery
You have a recipe, know the exact missing components, and the quartermaster sells one of them. Verify the rank and current cost, compare the market board, then exchange only the shortage. A material with no scheduled recipe is not automatically a good buy.
Newly promoted company member
Your promotion may unlock additional categories, but do not assume every historical item is available or that an old cap applies. Browse the newly visible exchange, record the current requirements, and choose a purchase tied to your next activity.
Player with excess seals and no immediate project
Keep a reserve and check the Timers interface for upcoming supply requests. Revisit the quartermaster when you have a concrete use instead of converting currency into speculative materials.
Bottom line: the best buy depends on what you will use next
For frequent glamour-dresser users, Glamour Prisms are the clearest repeatable seal sink because one is consumed per stored item. For everyone else, a project-specific crafting or housing material can be better, provided the recipe is real, the rank and current price are confirmed, and the exchange beats your alternatives. Historical patch notes prove that quartermasters have offered glamour goods, food, tools, crafting gear, tickets, and materials, but they do not establish today’s complete inventory or universal value. Open your own exchange, check the live numbers, and spend seals only when the purchase solves a current need.
