Start by identifying the exact model and region the seller claims to offer, then compare the console, labels, ports, packaging and accessories with references for that specific version. A low price, poor printing, missing materials or vague refurbishment claim is a reason to investigate—not proof of a fake. A device can work and still be misrepresented as an original.
First identify what the device is supposed to be
Before judging authenticity, write down the seller’s claim: manufacturer, exact model or model number, region, condition, included accessories, any repairs or modifications, and whether games are bundled or pre-installed. These details determine what evidence is relevant. A licensed modern re-release, openly described clone, emulator device, reproduction shell or modified original is not the same thing as an original console, even if it resembles one or plays games.
Ask the seller to clarify anything vague. In particular, ask what “refurbished” means, who performed the work, whether parts or the shell were replaced, and what software is included. Nintendo warns that products can be falsely described as refurbished, so the label alone is not a reliable account of the unit’s history (Nintendo Support’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ).
Inspect the listing and seller before the hardware
Request photos of the actual item
Do not rely only on catalog images. Ask for clear, current photographs showing the front, back, underside, ports, model and serial labels, seams, controller connectors, power supply, and packaging if included. If the seller will not provide basic evidence, treat that as a reason to pause rather than assume the listing is legitimate.

Compare price and protections
Compare the asking price with several listings for the same model, region, condition and level of completeness. Nintendo identifies an offer far below the average retail price as a possible counterfeit or scam warning; it is an indicator, not a verdict (Nintendo Support). Prefer a seller with a clear return policy so you have a remedy if the item does not match its description.
For PlayStation products, Sony’s US buying guide recommends authorized retailers as a way to help ensure authenticity, functionality, returns and warranty coverage. The guidance is US-specific and brand-specific; it does not establish a universal rule for vintage consoles from every manufacturer, especially discontinued models (PlayStation buying guide (US)).

Compare labels, printing and packaging with the exact version
Check for inconsistent logos, fuzzy or faded printing, misspellings, conflicting model or region information, and packaging that does not fit the seller’s claim about condition or completeness. Nintendo says counterfeit products may lack packaging or manuals, and that packaging may have blurred, faded, discoloured or poor-quality print (Nintendo Support’s counterfeit-product guidance).
Use these signs to prompt follow-up questions, not to make a stand-alone determination. Packaging and included materials vary by release, market and age. A used console may reasonably be missing its box or manual, and a convincing box does not authenticate the hardware inside. Compare with references for the precise model and regional release before treating a difference as suspicious.

Separate look-alike hardware from bundled games
A console-shaped device is not necessarily an original console from the company whose design it resembles. Nintendo reports an increase in look-alike devices based on older Nintendo consoles and warns that some are sold with unauthorized game copies already installed. Its guidance also calls out HDMI sticks and controllers sold with pre-installed copies or links to game sites (Nintendo Support’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ).
Ask who made the device, whether it is licensed, what hardware it uses, and what software is included. A large game count or familiar shell does not show that the unit is an original manufacturer console. Whether it runs games and whether it is accurately represented are separate questions.

Use licensing marks carefully
Nintendo says licensed gaming accessories and peripherals carry its Official Nintendo Licensed Product Seal. The company says unlicensed products have not been evaluated by Nintendo and may not work or may have compatibility problems (Nintendo Support’s Licensed and Unlicensed Nintendo Products guidance).
Apply that check to the product categories and periods the guidance covers. A decades-old accessory may predate current packaging or marking practices, so the absence of a current seal is not by itself proof of counterfeiting. Check the exact accessory, era and packaging against reliable references.

Compare listings on evidence, not one telltale sign
When you are choosing between listings, compare the same core points for each item. No official source provides a single cross-brand scoring system or a universal authentication test.
- Evidence for the exact model and region, including labels and physical details.
- Disclosure of authenticity, repairs, replaced parts, reshelling and modifications.
- Condition and completeness against what the seller claims is included.
- Demonstrated functionality, separately from the question of whether the unit is original.
- Price compared with similar examples.
- Seller reputation and the availability of a return policy or applicable warranty.
- For accessories, evidence of licensing and compatibility appropriate to the product and period.
When an internal inspection is useful—and when it is not
Photos of a board, fasteners or other internal details may help a qualified person assess a particular model or spot signs of modification. There is no universal internal checklist: screw types and expected components vary, and brand-specific official guidance cited here does not establish model-by-model board checks. Ask the seller for interior photos or consult a knowledgeable verifier if the uncertainty matters.
Do not open a sealed, valuable or return-sensitive item solely to follow a generic checklist. A gamebit or precision screwdriver set may fit some hardware, but tool compatibility varies and opening the unit does not authenticate it.
What the official warning signs can—and cannot—tell you
Nintendo’s guidance is useful for identifying reasons to ask questions: unusually low prices, missing packaging or manuals, poor-quality printing, questionable refurbishment claims, look-alike consoles and certain pre-installed game offers. It is not a model-by-model authentication standard for every retro brand. PlayStation’s buying advice likewise has a stated scope: it is a US guide for PlayStation purchases, not a blanket recommendation for all vintage hardware.
Where photos, labels, seller answers and model-specific references still leave a consequential question unresolved, do not treat appearance alone as proof. Seek an opinion from someone familiar with that exact console or accessory, or choose a listing with stronger evidence and meaningful return protection.
