To check whether a GTA 6 image or video is official, compare it with Rockstar’s current GTA VI page and media catalog. Match the exact asset, title, date, and category. If you cannot establish where a post came from, call it unverified—not fake or real. Being absent from Rockstar’s catalog does not prove an image is fabricated.
Start with Rockstar’s official reference pages
Open Rockstar’s GTA VI page and media catalog directly; don’t rely on a repost, screenshot of a web page, shortened link, or caption that claims to point to an official release. The official game page links to media and downloads, making it a useful route to the source rather than a copy circulating on social media.
As of October 3, 2026, Rockstar’s game page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and a release date of November 19, 2026. Release details can change, so check the live page when verifying a post. Older official material can be genuine yet out of date: Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 release for Trailer 2 gave a May 26, 2026 launch date, which has since been superseded by the current date on Rockstar’s site.
Identify what kind of media you are looking at
Rockstar’s catalog separates videos, clips, screenshots, and artwork. As checked October 3, 2026, it listed three featured videos—Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2, and Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 1—alongside nine clips, 99 screenshots, 51 Ultimate Edition screenshots, 12 Vintage Vice City screenshots, and 23 artwork and wallpaper items. These are counts at that time, not permanent totals.

Find the same scene or asset in the catalog and check its label. A fan render, edited frame, promotional illustration, or thumbnail may depict GTA VI without being a gameplay screenshot. Don’t call promotional artwork “gameplay” just because it resembles the game.
Follow this verification workflow
- Find the original post. Record the uploader and date, and look for a link to an original Rockstar, Take-Two, or official Rockstar YouTube release. A repost, crop, dramatic thumbnail, or account name does not authenticate the media.
- Open Rockstar’s current pages yourself. Use the official GTA VI page and media catalog, rather than trusting a screenshot or repost caption.
- Match the precise asset. Check whether the exact scene, title, date, and media category appear in the catalog. Distinguish a trailer or clip from a screenshot or artwork.
- Check any capture claim against the named release. Use official statements only for the specific material they describe; they are not universal tests for every image or video.
- Look at visual oddities as prompts to investigate. Cropping, compression, unusual text or UI, inconsistent shadows, reused footage, and visual artifacts can justify checking the source further. None is established here as a conclusive GTA VI fake detector, so don’t declare an item fake based on one clue.
- Choose a label the evidence supports. If you know an item is fan-made or edited, say so. If it is only claimed to be a leak, describe it as a purported leak. If its origin remains unclear, call it unverified.
What Rockstar and Take-Two have confirmed about specific releases
An Extended Look
Rockstar’s page dates Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look August 27, 2026, and says it was “Captured entirely from in-game footage on the PlayStation 5.” That statement describes this particular release; it does not establish that every image in circulation is captured gameplay or that genuine footage must look exactly like this.

Trailer 2
Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 release says, “All trailer footage was captured on PlayStation 5.” That is a claim about Trailer 2, not a general authenticity rule for unrelated clips. The release also illustrates why checking dates matters: its launch date was May 26, 2026, while Rockstar’s current game page now lists November 19, 2026.
Why a takedown does not prove a leak is real
Rockstar’s policy, last updated January 10, 2025, says the company will take down posts showing in-game footage from leaked pre-release copies, regardless of how the copy was obtained. That is a copyright and content policy; a takedown does not establish that any particular viral “leak” is genuine.

Rockstar’s official catalog is a comparison library, not a published exhaustive registry of every authentic image or leaked frame. A missing item therefore remains unverified unless reliable evidence establishes more. The official material cited here does not provide a pixel-level test for authenticating a specific circulating image or clip.

- Official: The exact release or asset is published in an official Rockstar or Take-Two channel.
- Fan-made or edited: Use these labels when you have evidence of fan creation or alteration.
- Purported leak: Appropriate when someone claims leaked origin, but that origin is not independently established.
- Unverified: The safest label when you cannot establish provenance or reliable confirmation either way.
In particular, don’t turn “not in Rockstar’s catalog” into “fake,” or a viral “leak” label into “real.”
