SSH to the VPS host, then use Docker from that host to open a process inside the running container. The normal sequence is:

What you need before connecting
This procedure assumes your VPS is already running Docker and that you have an SSH account for the VPS host. Your host account also needs permission to communicate with the Docker daemon. The VPS provider’s normal SSH key and account are used for the first connection; the container does not need its own SSH key for this administration method.
- The VPS hostname or IP address, represented below as
VPS_HOST. - An SSH username authorized on the VPS, represented as
user. - Your private key or other authentication method accepted by that host.
- Permission to run Docker commands on the host.
- A target container that is running, plus a shell executable such as
shin its image.
A container name and an image name are different identifiers. docker exec requires the name or ID of a container, not the name of the image from which it was created.

Connect to the VPS host first
Open the host session
From your workstation, run the SSH command supplied by your VPS configuration:
ssh user@VPS_HOSTAfter authentication, your terminal is on the Docker host. This distinction matters: the Docker CLI and the Docker socket you need are normally available on the host, not inside the application container. If your provider requires an identity-file option, use the key and SSH options already defined for that VPS account.
Confirm that Docker is available
Run a harmless Docker command before looking for the application:
docker psIf this returns a permission error, you are logged in successfully but the host account is not authorized to access the Docker daemon. Do not work around that by exposing a Docker TCP socket. Ask the administrator to grant the narrowest appropriate host-side access instead; Docker daemon access can provide root-equivalent control of the host.
Find the right container
List running containers
docker ps shows containers that are currently running. Read the name or short ID from that list and use it in later commands:
docker psNames are often easier to read and reuse, while IDs are useful when a deployment generated an unfamiliar name. Copy the identifier exactly. A typo produces a No such container error.

If the service is not listed, it may exist but be stopped. Display all containers, including exited ones:
docker ps --allUse this output to distinguish a missing container from a stopped one. If the target does not appear at all, verify that you are connected to the correct VPS and Docker daemon and that you have used the container identifier rather than an image name.

Start a stopped container before using exec
docker exec starts a new process inside a running container; it cannot create a shell in a container that has already exited. Start the existing container by name or ID:
docker start CONTAINER_NAMEThen confirm its state:
docker psStarting a container restarts its configured main process. It does not open a shell by itself. Once the container appears in docker ps, use docker exec to launch the administrative command you need. If it exits again immediately, inspect the reason with the troubleshooting steps below rather than repeatedly attempting to exec into it.

Try the portable shell first
Most minimal images provide a POSIX-style shell at /bin/sh. The standard interactive command is:
docker exec -it CONTAINER_NAME shThe -i flag keeps standard input open, and -t allocates a terminal, so the result behaves like an interactive shell session. Once it starts, commands run in the container’s filesystem, namespace and environment rather than on the VPS host.
Use Bash only when the image includes it
Some images contain Bash and some deliberately omit it to stay small. If Bash is present, this command provides a Bash session:
docker exec -it CONTAINER_NAME bashAn executable file not found error means the requested executable is absent or is not on the container’s executable path. Switch to sh first. If that also fails, the image may not contain an interactive shell at all; use a one-off command that the image does provide or rebuild the image with an appropriate diagnostic tool.

Specify an explicit command when useful
You can provide a path or another executable instead of relying on the shell name:
docker exec -it CONTAINER_NAME /bin/shThe exact path is image-dependent. Do not assume that a shell available on the VPS host is also installed in the container; containers carry their own user-space files.

Run a single command without opening a shell
For a quick check, omit the interactive and terminal flags and place the command after the container identifier:
docker exec CONTAINER_NAME COMMANDExamples from Docker’s command pattern include:
docker exec web ls /app
docker exec web printenvThis starts the command as a separate process in the running container and returns its output to your current terminal. One-off commands are useful for checking an application directory or environment without leaving an interactive session open. They also make repeatable maintenance procedures easier to record because every action is visible in the host shell’s history.

If the command itself needs arguments, place them after the executable in the usual command-line order. The command must exist inside the image; host binaries are not automatically available inside the container.
Leave the container without stopping it
When you are finished in an interactive shell, type:
exitThis exits the shell process that docker exec started. It does not intentionally stop the container’s main process. The application container should therefore continue running unless your command changed its application state or the main process exits for another reason.
After leaving, you are back at the VPS host prompt. A second exit closes the host’s SSH session and returns you to your workstation.
docker exec and docker attach are not interchangeable
Choose the command based on which process you need to control. docker exec creates a new process, normally a shell. docker attach connects your terminal’s standard input, output and error streams to the container’s existing entrypoint process, usually PID 1.

Use docker logs CONTAINER_NAME for high-volume application output instead of attaching a slow client to the main process. Docker documents the detach sequence Ctrl-p followed by Ctrl-q when the container was started with interactive and TTY flags. Ctrl-c can signal the foreground process and may stop it, so do not experiment with attach on a production service unless you understand the entrypoint’s signal handling.

Run Docker from your workstation through SSH (optional)
You do not have to open an interactive host shell for every Docker command. Docker can use an SSH daemon endpoint as a remote context, allowing the Docker CLI on your workstation to talk to the daemon on the VPS.
Create and select a persistent SSH context
docker context create --docker host=ssh://[email protected] vps
docker context use vps
docker psThe SSH user in the context must be allowed to access the Docker socket on the VPS. After selecting the context, commands such as docker ps and docker exec target that remote daemon until you switch contexts again. Check the active context before running a destructive command so you do not operate on the wrong host.
Use a temporary DOCKER_HOST setting
For a short-lived shell session, set the endpoint in the environment:
export DOCKER_HOST=ssh://[email protected]
docker psUnset the variable or close that shell when you want the CLI to return to its normal daemon. This method avoids changing the saved context, but the same socket permissions and SSH authentication requirements apply.
Reuse SSH connections when appropriate
Docker’s SSH guidance documents OpenSSH connection reuse with these options:

ControlPersist yesConnection reuse can reduce repeated handshakes when a script runs several Docker commands. Apply these options in the SSH configuration used for the VPS, and ensure the control-socket path is protected like other SSH state. Reuse does not change Docker authorization: the remote account still needs access to the daemon.
Why installing SSH in every container is usually the wrong model
For ordinary application containers, Docker’s security guidance describes SSH access as being managed by one server on the Docker host. The CIS Docker Benchmark 1.11.0 recommendation 5.6 says an SSH server should not be running within the container and directs administrators to SSH to the host, then use docker exec or docker attach.
Running sshd in every container creates another set of keys or passwords, another exposed service, another update stream and another access policy to maintain. It also requires publishing an SSH port from each container and ensuring firewall rules remain correct after deployments. Host-managed access keeps the administrative entry point in one place while Docker controls which container process you start.

When a containerized SSH service is intentional
A container that is specifically designed to provide SSH as part of its application is a different architecture. In that case, publish the service deliberately, restrict its firewall exposure, use key authentication and treat the container’s SSH configuration as part of that application’s threat model. Do not confuse that service design with the routine task of opening a shell in an ordinary web, game or worker container.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
Permission denied from Docker
Your SSH login worked, but the host account cannot access the Docker socket. Use a host account that the administrator has authorized for Docker, or request narrowly controlled access. Docker daemon access is powerful enough to control host-level resources, so adding broad privileges casually is a security decision, not just a convenience fix.
No such container
List all containers and copy the exact name or ID:
docker ps --allCheck spelling, capitalization and whether you accidentally supplied an image name. If no matching container appears, verify the VPS, Docker context and deployment that created it.
executable file not found
The container does not have the command you requested. Replace bash with sh for a minimal image. If neither shell exists, run an executable that the image was built to provide or use the image’s documented diagnostic interface. Installing packages interactively may not survive container replacement, so make durable changes in the image or deployment definition.
The container exits immediately
Inspect its state with:
docker ps --allThen read the application output:
docker logs CONTAINER_NAMEA stopped container cannot accept docker exec. The logs and exit state should explain why its main process terminated. Fix the application or startup configuration, start the container again, and confirm it remains listed by docker ps before opening a shell.

Use docker attach CONTAINER_NAME only when connecting to the existing entrypoint is actually required. Remember that input and signals go to that process. For routine inspection, return to docker exec -it CONTAINER_NAME sh; it isolates your shell from the application’s primary terminal.
You want to administer the VPS from a workstation
Use an SSH Docker context or a temporary DOCKER_HOST=ssh://... endpoint. Do not publish an unauthenticated Docker TCP socket to the network. SSH protects the transport while the remote account’s Docker-socket permission determines what that account can control.
Security checklist for production VPS access
- Keep the Docker daemon reachable through the host’s controlled SSH access or an SSH-backed Docker context, not an unauthenticated TCP endpoint.
- Use a dedicated, auditable host account for Docker administration where your operational model permits it.
- Treat Docker-socket access as effectively host-level privilege; review who has it and remove stale access.
- Prefer the separate process created by
docker execfor routine administration. - Use
docker attachonly with a clear reason, because terminal signals can reach the main process. - Use
shwhen the image is minimal and do not assume Bash is installed. - Record the exact container name or ID from
docker psbefore running a maintenance command. - Exit the shell when finished and close the host SSH session if no further work is needed.

The shortest safe procedure
- SSH to the VPS host with its normal account and key.
- Run
docker ps; usedocker ps --allif the target may be stopped. - Start it with
docker start CONTAINER_NAMEwhen necessary. - Open a separate shell using
docker exec -it CONTAINER_NAME sh. - Switch to
bashonly if the image contains Bash. - Type
exitto leave the shell without intentionally stopping the container.
This host-SSH-plus-docker exec workflow is the standard administration path for an ordinary running container. It keeps SSH policy on the VPS, targets a separate process instead of the application’s PID 1, and avoids adding an unnecessary SSH daemon to every image.
