To start a charity livestream on YouTube, first check whether your channel can use YouTube Giving and whether the charity is listed. In YouTube Studio, create a fundraiser, select the eligible nonprofit, attach the fundraiser to a scheduled livestream, and publish it. Then test the broadcast and show viewers where to find the Donate button. If your channel or cause is not eligible for native YouTube Giving, you can instead direct viewers to a clearly identified external fundraiser.
Check your channel’s eligibility first
YouTube Giving access depends on both the creator and the nonprofit. YouTube’s stated general creator criteria include a supported location, membership in the YouTube Partner Program, a channel that is not designated Made for Kids, and at least 10,000 subscribers. These criteria are not a guarantee that the feature will appear: YouTube says some channels outside them may also have access. Check YouTube Studio’s Earn > Giving section for your channel’s current options.
You also need live streaming enabled. YouTube says channels must be verified and the account holder must be at least 16 to livestream. A channel with a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days may not be able to stream. Confirm eligibility and restrictions in YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.
YouTube currently lists fundraiser setup for creators based in Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Croatia, Estonia, France, Germany, Ghana, Hong Kong, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Montenegro, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Availability can change, so use the Giving section in Studio and YouTube’s current YouTube Giving FAQs to confirm what applies to your channel.

Confirm that the charity is available
Search for the organization during fundraiser setup. Native YouTube Giving currently supports eligible US-registered 501(c)(3) public charities, not private foundations. The nonprofit must meet YouTube’s requirements, including Google for Nonprofits membership, opting in to online fundraising via GuideStar, and compliance with applicable YouTube policies. YouTube says a request to add a qualifying nonprofit can take up to five business days.
If the organization does not appear, it may not meet those criteria, may not be opted in, or may not yet be listed. Do not describe an external donation page as YouTube’s native Donate button: it is a separate route, with its own destination, fees, receipts, and disclosure requirements to verify. Google for Nonprofits suggests linking an approved third-party fundraising site in an end screen when native Giving is unavailable; it names GoFundMe and JustGiving as examples.

Create the YouTube Giving fundraiser
- In YouTube Studio, open Earn > Giving, choose Get started, then Create a fundraiser.
- Select the eligible nonprofit. Add the fundraiser title and description, and choose collaborators if applicable. You may also set a fundraising goal and duration.
- Attach the scheduled livestream that should carry the fundraiser’s Donate button. You can also start fundraiser setup from the Live Control Room’s Advanced Settings.
- Set and check the fundraiser start date. The Donate button appears according to the fundraiser’s start date, so make sure it is active when your event begins.
- Publish the fundraiser and verify that it is attached to the correct scheduled stream. YouTube’s fundraiser setup instructions describe the current Studio workflow.
Choose the right setup for a gaming event
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and console livestreaming. Choose based on where the event happens and how much production control you need. YouTube Help says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.”
| Method | Best fit | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Quick updates or an event happening away from a desk | Check YouTube’s eligibility requirements for mobile streaming and test the connection where you will broadcast. |
| Webcam | A straightforward computer-based stream | You need a computer and webcam; check framing, lighting, and audio before going live. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, overlays, concerts, conferences, or external cameras and microphones | Configure and monitor the encoder, audio sources, and stream in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder 15 minutes before the event. |
| Console | A broadcast centered on gameplay from a console | Follow the console maker’s streaming instructions and confirm how you will monitor the broadcast and donor chat. |
An optional microphone can improve audio for a computer or encoder setup, but it is not required. Before choosing a bitrate, resolution, or encoder setting, follow YouTube’s current live encoder settings and streaming network guidance. Check upload speed rather than relying on download speed, and leave about 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate.

Test the broadcast and tell viewers how to donate
- Run a test stream before the event. Check the Live Control Room preview, audio levels, video quality, and stream stability.
- Confirm that the scheduled event is accessible from the channel or watch page and on mobile. For encoder events, follow YouTube’s setup timing guidance: prepare at least two hours ahead and start the encoder 15 minutes before the event.
- Check that live chat is enabled if you want viewers to donate through chat. On mobile, viewers need portrait mode to see chat.
- Tell viewers where the Donate control will appear. With live chat on, they can donate in chat; when chat is off, the Donate button appears by or below the video.
When Live Chat Donations are enabled, they replace Super Chat for Good. Super Chat and Super Stickers are unavailable on streams with Live Chat Donations. A public live chat donation may show the donor’s account name and amount; a donation not made public displays its amount as “Anonymous.” YouTube says donations are non-refundable.
Understand where donations go and what viewers receive
YouTube says, “100% of your contribution goes to the nonprofit and YouTube will pay transaction fees.” Google partners with Network for Good to collect and distribute donations at Google’s request. Once collected, Network for Good has exclusive legal control over the donation; if funds cannot be disbursed to the designated nonprofit, YouTube’s FAQ says an alternate qualifying nonprofit may be selected. The creator does not personally receive or control these funds.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If native YouTube Giving is unavailable
If your channel cannot create a native fundraiser or the cause is not listed, you can link an approved third-party fundraising page in the video or an end screen, as Google for Nonprofits suggests. Make clear that this is an external donation link, not YouTube’s native Donate button. Before promoting it, check that the destination is the charity’s intended page and verify its fees, receipts, and relevant disclosure requirements.

Or let it run in the cloud
For a charity event built around prerecorded gameplay, a message, or other uploaded video that should keep looping on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not a live camera feed; use YouTube Giving’s fundraiser setup separately if you want the native Donate button.
