To start a low-latency stream, create a stream in the current Wowza Video interface, choose an ingest type and a region near your source, connect a compatible camera or encoder using the generated connection details, then select and test a delivery path suited to your viewers. The title’s “Wowza Streaming Cloud” is legacy terminology: Wowza’s current setup guide uses the name Wowza Video. Low latency is not a single switch or a guaranteed end-to-end result; ingest, encoding, delivery, playback device and viewer network all affect the delay.

Before you create a stream

Confirm the service and workflow

Sign in to the Wowza Video account you intend to use and confirm that it has access to the workflow you need. Standard WebRTC and Wowza Video Real-Time Streaming at Scale (RTS@S) are distinct options; RTS@S requires a paid license and is not included in the free trial, according to Wowza’s requirements documentation. Check the RTS@S requirements before building around it.

Check your source device

You need a camera, software encoder or hardware encoder that can send a format accepted by the selected Wowza input workflow. Wowza lists RTMP, SRT, RTSP, WebRTC and file input workflows and names devices or software from vMix, Epiphan, Telestream, LiveU, Teradek and Matrox among its input types. The exact protocol, codec and connection fields depend on the selected workflow and device, so check the device manual and Wowza’s current setup steps rather than assuming every encoder uses the same settings. Wowza’s live-stream setup guide and encoder connection guide describe the process.

Create the Wowza Video stream

  1. Choose the input type. In Wowza Video, create a stream and select the input workflow that matches your source and intended protocol. Options described by Wowza include RTMP, SRT, RTSP, WebRTC and file workflows; availability can depend on account access and configuration.
  2. Select a broadcast region. Choose a region close to the camera or encoder sending the video. Wowza recommends proximity to the broadcast source for performance. This is an ingest-side choice; it does not by itself determine the viewer’s end-to-end delay.
  3. Save the generated connection details. Wowza provides the connection information for the chosen input. Depending on workflow, this can include a server address, stream name or key, and protocol-specific values. Treat stream keys and credentials as private: do not publish them in a screenshot, stream overlay or public chat.
  4. Configure the source and start sending. Enter the generated values in the camera or encoder’s live-stream destination settings, select the compatible output format, and start the source. Follow the encoder’s own manual for its UI. Confirm in Wowza Video that the input is arriving before moving on to playback.

Choose a delivery path for your latency target

Pick the playback workflow based on how quickly viewers need to see events, whether they need two-way interaction, the expected audience, device compatibility and account licensing. The latency numbers below describe different workflows and are not directly interchangeable.

Delivery path When it fits Latency evidence and tradeoffs
Standard WebRTC Near-real-time viewing or interaction where the workflow and playback clients support WebRTC. Wowza documentation says it may suit audiences below 300 viewers or cases where other delivery protocols are also desired. The fewer-than-300 context is Wowza’s documented guidance, not a capacity guarantee. The Streaming Engine WebRTC figures later in this article apply to that separate product and workflow, not automatically to Wowza Video.
Real-Time Streaming at Scale (RTS@S) Large-scale distribution when the account has the separately licensed feature and its workflow matches the use case. Wowza states that RTS@S provides half-second latency to viewers. This is a vendor capability claim, not an independent measurement or a guarantee for every source, viewer network or playback device.
HLS over HTTPS with low-latency tuning HLS playback is needed and reducing delay is worth additional network overhead and potentially less tolerance for weak connections. Wowza’s API documents a low_latency setting for HLS-HTTPS. It disables incoming and sort packet buffers and sends smaller packets; the documented default is false. Smaller packets can reduce delay but raise network overhead. See the Wowza Video REST API reference.
Legacy Wowza Streaming Cloud low-latency HLS Only relevant when an account still exposes the legacy control; verify behavior in the current account before relying on it. A 2017 legacy guide said this HLS mode could reach as little as 10 seconds, with added bandwidth overhead and possible stalls on inadequate connections. It also said the setting did not reduce latency on the hosted webpage. This is legacy behavior, not a current Wowza Video promise. Read the legacy guide.

What the latency figures do—and do not—mean

Wowza’s RTS@S documentation describes “half-second latency to all your viewers, no matter where they are.” Treat that as Wowza’s stated capability for that licensed feature, not as an independently tested result. It should not be read as a blanket promise covering other Wowza delivery paths.

Separately, Wowza Streaming Engine documentation gives expected WebRTC latency of one second or less for passthrough streams and two seconds or less when transcoding is needed. Those figures are specific to Streaming Engine’s WebRTC workflow; they are not guaranteed figures for Wowza Video cloud streams. Wowza also notes that encoder frame buffering remains a factor. See the Streaming Engine WebRTC documentation.

Configure and test for real-world delay

Check the entire playback path

  • Test with the same playback method, player and type of network your audience will use. A low-delay ingest does not ensure low delay at the viewer.
  • Measure from a visible, time-referenced event at the source to the same event on the playback device. Repeat over more than one connection if viewers will use varied networks.
  • Verify whether the chosen workflow transcodes. In the Streaming Engine WebRTC documentation, passthrough is expected to be one second or less, while transcoding is expected to be two seconds or less; transcoding can add delay.
  • Check source-side buffering and frame structure. Encoder buffering, packetization, player buffering and network conditions all affect the result.

HLS: tune with bandwidth in mind

For HLS-HTTPS, Wowza’s documented API setting low_latency defaults to false. When enabled, the documented behavior disables incoming and sort packet buffers and sends smaller packets. That can reduce delay but increases network overhead, so test on the weakest connection you expect to serve and watch for stalls. The setting is specific to HLS-HTTPS; do not assume it changes WebRTC or every playback path.

A separate Wowza REST API guide describes reducing a 10-second HLS segment default to 2 seconds, with 8–10 seconds described as achievable. Segment duration is not equivalent to total glass-to-glass latency: encoding, playlist updates, player buffering and network delivery contribute too. Check the current API and account behavior before applying legacy or workflow-specific segment guidance. Consult Wowza’s REST API guide.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Wowza does not show an incoming stream Incorrect destination details, input type mismatch, or the encoder is not actually sending. Compare the encoder’s protocol and destination fields with the values generated for this Wowza stream. Confirm the source is started and check the encoder’s own connection status.
Playback starts but is delayed The chosen delivery protocol or player buffers more than expected, the source encoder adds frame buffering, or transcoding is in the path. Confirm the actual playback workflow, inspect encoder buffering and whether transcoding is enabled, then test again using a playback client suited to that protocol.
Low-latency HLS stalls or fails on some connections Smaller packets or segments can increase network overhead; available bandwidth may be insufficient. Test on weaker audience connections. If stalls outweigh the delay reduction, use a less aggressive HLS configuration or a different delivery path that meets the audience’s needs.
RTS@S is unavailable in the account The feature has separate paid-license requirements and is not part of the free trial. Verify service eligibility with Wowza before designing the workflow around RTS@S.
The legacy low-latency control does not affect the page you are using The 2017 Streaming Cloud guide says its setting did not reduce latency on Wowza’s hosted webpage. Verify whether the current account uses that legacy behavior and test the exact playback path; do not assume the old control changes current Wowza Video playback.

Source equipment and cost considerations

If you do not already have a source, an H.264 live streaming encoder is a relevant equipment category, but a separate encoder is not required for every setup: some cameras and software can send a supported stream themselves. Before buying, confirm that the device supports the selected Wowza ingest protocol, codec and required workflow. No specific model is established here as a universal fit.

Also account for bandwidth and licensing in the workflow decision. Low-latency packet or segment choices can consume more network overhead, while RTS@S requires a paid license. Wowza’s published latency figures are workflow-specific vendor statements; no independent comparative latency measurement is established here.
