You can start a shared hosting business on a VPS, but the VPS is only the infrastructure. A viable service also needs a supported operating system, root access, a static public IP, a fully qualified hostname, authoritative DNS, account isolation, backups, billing automation, abuse handling, and a support process.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
The practical launch path is: validate a narrow customer segment, provision and secure the VPS, install a VPS-compatible control panel, define hosting packages, connect billing and provisioning, test every customer workflow, run a small pilot, and increase capacity only when your measurements show that you need it.

What you need before selling an account
A shared-hosting business places multiple independent customer accounts on one server. Your customers may see separate control-panel accounts, websites, databases, mailboxes and DNS zones, but you remain responsible for the underlying VPS, operating system, panel, networking, security, backups and service communication.
Start by writing the service promise rather than by buying the largest server you can afford. Decide who you serve—such as local agencies, freelancers or small WordPress sites—and what those customers can expect. Document support hours, included migrations, email policy, backup retention, acceptable-use rules, refund terms and the path for handling abuse or incidents.

Infrastructure prerequisites
- Root or equivalent administrator access to the VPS.
- A Linux distribution supported by the control panel version you intend to install.
- A static public IPv4 address and, where offered, usable IPv6.
- A fully qualified hostname, such as
server.example.com, that resolves to the server. - A default gateway. If the VPS is behind NAT, the panel may require one-to-one NAT.
- Predictable storage I/O, bandwidth and network routing suitable for concurrent websites and mail.
- Snapshots or a separate backup destination, with a provider that has a defined abuse-response process.
- Control of DNS records and reverse DNS, or a provider that will make those changes for you.
For cPanel installations, cPanel’s networking requirements specifically include a fully qualified hostname, at least one IPv4 address, a default gateway and 1:1 NAT when applicable. Confirm the current system-requirements page for the exact operating-system and license combinations before deploying; requirements can change between releases.
Choose the VPS and control panel
Choose a provider on operational characteristics, not just on advertised CPU cores or storage capacity. A shared host can fail because of slow storage, poor network throughput, an unavailable reverse-DNS change or an ineffective abuse process even when its nominal specifications look generous.
VPS selection checklist
- Access: You need root access, console access for recovery and the ability to reinstall or attach rescue media.
- Network identity: Confirm static IPv4 allocation, IPv6 behavior, reverse-DNS control and whether additional addresses can be added later.
- Storage: Ask how storage performance is provisioned and whether snapshots consume the same capacity as customer data.
- Backups: Verify whether snapshots are independent from the VPS and whether you can send encrypted backups to another location.
- Reliability: Review maintenance notices, outage communication and the provider’s escalation path.
- Abuse handling: Understand how complaints, malware reports, spam reports and emergency takedowns are handled.
- Exit options: Check that you can download account backups, DNS zones and databases if you later move providers.
Control-panel decision criteria
A panel is the operating interface for account creation, domains, databases, mail, DNS, certificates and resource controls. Score each candidate against the same criteria:
| Criterion | What to verify |
|---|---|
| VPS compatibility and licensing | Whether the license is intended for virtual machines, which operating systems are supported and what happens when a license expires. |
| Account isolation | Separate customer accounts, permissions, process limits and controls that prevent one account from becoming the easiest path to another. |
| DNS and mail | Authoritative DNS management, zone templates, mailbox controls, spam protections and reverse-DNS compatibility. |
| SSL automation | Automatic certificate issuance, renewal behavior and clear handling of DNS or rate-limit failures. |
| Backups and restores | Granular account restores, full-server recovery, retention controls and logs that show whether jobs actually succeeded. |
| Automation | API access, hooks and integration with billing, payment gateways and domain registration. |
| Migration | Import tools, account packaging and a way to preserve databases, mail and DNS records. |
| Operations | Monitoring integrations, audit logs, update controls and documentation for emergency recovery. |
| Economics | Total panel, VPS, backup, IP and support cost divided by active accounts, plus the effort required to leave later. |
For cPanel, the Cloud license is the VPS and cloud option; the Metal license is intended for dedicated hardware. Install only after checking the current cPanel requirements for your chosen distribution and VPS environment.
Install the server safely
Deploy a clean supported operating system. Do not install a control panel on a VPS that already contains unrelated services unless the panel’s documentation explicitly supports that arrangement. A clean build makes upgrades, support and recovery much easier.

- Record the baseline. Save the VPS IP addresses, gateway, operating-system release, provider console details and reverse-DNS setting in a private operations record.
- Set the hostname. Choose a stable fully qualified hostname and create its forward DNS record before installation. Ensure the system itself reports the same hostname.
- Update the operating system. Apply current security updates, set the correct time zone and enable time synchronization.
- Install the panel and license. Follow the panel’s supported installation method. Do not mix repositories or install unapproved packages that can overwrite panel-managed services.
- Create an administrative access plan. Use SSH keys where available, protect the console account, restrict administrative ports to trusted networks when practical and enable multifactor authentication for panel users.
- Remove unnecessary exposure. Disable services you do not sell, close unused ports and ensure firewall rules allow only the services customers require.
- Capture a recovery point. Take a provider snapshot only after the initial hardening and document what it contains and how it will be restored.
Keep administrative actions auditable. Separate your own administrator account from customer accounts, avoid sharing credentials and record who approved changes to DNS, mail, firewall rules and backups.
Design hosting packages before taking orders
Packages are a contract about resources and support, not just a disk-space number. Start with a small set of plans that you can explain and enforce consistently. WHMCS can map a shared-hosting product to a package configured in WHM, apply recurring pricing, collect the required domain and trigger automatic setup after payment.
| Package dimension | Define in the offer |
|---|---|
| Storage | Included space, what counts toward it and what happens when the limit is reached. |
| Bandwidth | Whether usage is measured, how overages are handled and what traffic is prohibited. |
| Websites and domains | Primary domains, aliases, subdomains and any restrictions on parked or addon domains. |
| Mailbox count, mailbox size, sending expectations, spam policy and whether transactional sending is supported. | |
| Databases | Database count, engine and version support, database-size expectations and connection limits. |
| Processes and CPU | Process, entry-process or CPU controls available in the panel and the response to sustained exhaustion. |
| Backups | Retention, restore scope, restore request procedure and exclusions. |
| Support | Channels, support hours, response targets and whether migrations or application troubleshooting are included. |
| Acceptable use | Prohibited content, bulk mail rules, abuse response and suspension or termination conditions. |
Do not promise unlimited resources when the VPS has finite CPU, memory, storage I/O and network capacity. Explain the boundary between hosting support and application support: keeping the web server available is different from debugging a customer’s plugin or custom code.
Configure DNS, nameservers and mail identity
Customers need a dependable way to point domains at your service. Register branded nameservers, such as ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com, at your registrar. Create glue records when the registrar requires them, then configure the corresponding authoritative zones in the panel.
Records to test for every service domain
- A and AAAA: Point the hostname and customer web endpoints to the intended addresses.
- MX: Deliver mail to the correct mail host and use a priority order that matches your design.
- SPF: Publish the authorized sending sources and keep the policy aligned with the mail service you actually operate.
- DKIM: Generate and publish signing keys, then verify that outgoing mail is signed.
- DMARC: Start with a policy appropriate to your confidence in SPF and DKIM alignment, and monitor reports before tightening enforcement.
- PTR/reverse DNS: Set the VPS address to a hostname that resolves forward to the same address. This is important for mail reputation and troubleshooting.
Test from outside your provider’s network. A local resolver can return cached data and hide a missing delegation or glue record. Keep DNS authority available during certificate issuance; cPanel notes that AutoSSL for linked mail nodes requires authoritative DNS management.

Enable HTTPS and harden customer accounts
Serve customer websites over HTTPS by default. cPanel documents support for TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3. Its current SSL guidance states that Let’s Encrypt is the default AutoSSL provider for new installations and is included with cPanel & WHM. Certificate-order and registered-domain limits still apply, so automatic issuance can fail even when the panel is configured correctly.
- Confirm that the domain resolves to the correct server before requesting a certificate.
- Ensure HTTP or the required validation method can reach the account and that DNS is authoritative and consistent.
- Enable AutoSSL for the appropriate accounts and inspect the issuance log rather than assuming every domain succeeded.
- Test the certificate, intermediate chain, renewal date and redirects from an external network.
- Investigate rate-limit, DNS, validation and mail-node errors before repeatedly retrying issuance.
Apply layered security around the panel and hosted accounts:
- Require multifactor authentication for administrators and offer it to customers.
- Restrict administrative ports and use a firewall with documented change control.
- Patch the operating system, panel and exposed applications promptly.
- Separate customer users and avoid shared filesystem permissions.
- Disable unused services and default accounts.
- Log administrative access, package changes, login failures, malware events and suspension actions.
- Define a process for compromised accounts, outbound spam, phishing reports and emergency isolation.
Build backups that you can actually restore
Keep backups away from the VPS or on storage protected by separate credentials. A snapshot on the same provider is useful for short-term rollback, but it is not a complete business-continuity plan if the provider account, region or storage system is unavailable.
Minimum backup design
- Choose retention periods that match the promises in each package.
- Encrypt backups and protect encryption keys separately from the backup files.
- Monitor job completion, backup age, destination capacity and transfer errors.
- Include website files, databases, mail data, DNS zones and account configuration where your restore process requires them.
- Document who can authorize a restore and how customers request one.
- Run scheduled restore drills to a separate location. Record elapsed time, missing data and any manual steps.
A backup that has never been restored is not a demonstrated recovery plan. Set recovery objectives before choosing retention or storage; the right design depends on how much data customers can recreate and how long your service can be unavailable.

Connect the components
- Add the hosting server. Enter the panel API or server details in the billing system, use a restricted automation credential and verify that the connection can create, suspend and terminate only the intended accounts.
- Create the package in WHM. Set the resource limits and feature list first. Give the package a stable name so billing mappings do not break when you revise descriptions.
- Create the customer product. Set recurring billing, required domain fields, provisioning behavior, renewal handling, suspension timing and cancellation rules.
- Configure payment gateways. Test successful payment, failed payment, chargeback notification and refund behavior in a safe environment before enabling automatic suspension.
- Add domain registration if offered. Verify registration, transfer, renewal, nameserver assignment and failed-registration handling.
- Write customer messages. Include account credentials through a secure delivery method, nameserver instructions, limits, support contacts and backup terms.
Test the complete lifecycle
- New order with successful payment and automatic account creation.
- Order held for manual review because of fraud or an unusual domain.
- Payment failure, retry and eventual suspension.
- Upgrade or downgrade with correct package mapping and proration policy.
- Password reset and multifactor recovery.
- Migration of a site, database, mailbox and DNS zone.
- Cancellation, end-of-term termination and data-deletion timing.
- Refund, domain-registration failure and duplicate-order handling.
Use test domains and nonproduction accounts. Confirm that a failed API call does not create a paid order without an account, or an account without a paid order. Keep an audit trail of each automated action.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Launch a pilot and measure capacity
There is no reliable universal “accounts per VPS” figure. cPanel’s hardware guidance identifies CPU, RAM, storage I/O speed, network throughput, concurrent processes and core services as factors that determine demand. Two servers with the same advertised specifications can support very different customer mixes.

Start below saturation
Launch with a small pilot whose sites represent the workload you intend to sell. Watch peak and sustained CPU, memory pressure, swap activity, storage latency and I/O throughput. Also monitor network traffic, concurrent processes, web-server errors, database load, mail queues, certificate failures and backup duration.
| Signal | Why it matters | Action when it worsens |
|---|---|---|
| CPU and process saturation | One busy account can delay every other account. | Identify the account, enforce package limits, optimize or move it, then add capacity if the pattern is normal demand. |
| Memory pressure or swap | Swapping increases latency and can trigger service failures. | Reduce concurrency, tune services, move workloads or resize RAM. |
| Storage latency and queue depth | Slow I/O affects websites, databases, mail and backups simultaneously. | Move to faster storage, separate backup traffic or distribute accounts. |
| Mail queues and reputation | Abuse or poor authentication can damage delivery for all customers. | Quarantine compromised accounts, investigate sending sources and enforce mail policy. |
| Backup and restore duration | Growing data can make the stated recovery objective impossible. | Increase backup bandwidth or storage, adjust retention transparently or distribute accounts. |
| Support load and failed payments | Operational work can become the limiting resource before hardware does. | Improve onboarding, automation, documentation or staffing before adding more accounts. |
Set alert thresholds before the pilot starts. Resize the VPS, add resources or move accounts when measured utilization, latency, mail queues or support load repeatedly breaches those thresholds—not because an online calculator predicts a fixed account count.
Operate the business, not just the server
Publish a status page or service-status channel, maintenance notices, support response targets, abuse and takedown procedures, privacy terms, data-retention rules and a clear division of responsibility between the VPS provider, your hosting business and the customer.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Metrics worth reviewing monthly
- Churn and cancellation reasons.
- Failed payments, retry success and involuntary suspensions.
- Support tickets per active account and response time.
- Backup-restore success rate and recovery time.
- Resource cost per active account.
- Gross margin after VPS, panel, backup, payment and support costs.
- Abuse reports, compromised accounts and time to containment.
- Mail-delivery problems and certificate-renewal failures.
Use these measurements to refine packages and service promises. If customers consistently need more database connections, mail support or migration help than the plan includes, change the offer instead of quietly exceeding the VPS’s safe operating envelope.

The panel installer rejects the server
Check the hostname, IPv4 address, gateway, NAT arrangement, operating-system release and license type. Rebuild from a clean supported image rather than repeatedly forcing an unsupported installation.
Customers cannot obtain certificates
Verify delegation, glue records, A/AAAA records, authoritative DNS availability and validation reachability. Read the AutoSSL log for rate-limit or domain-registration limits before retrying.
Mail goes to spam or is rejected
Correct reverse DNS, publish SPF, sign with DKIM and add DMARC. Investigate compromised scripts, unusual outbound volume and shared-IP reputation. Suspend abusive accounts according to the published policy.
A backup job reports success but a restore fails
Inspect whether the job included databases, mail and DNS data, confirm that the destination files are readable and perform a complete restore drill. Repair the process before promising the retention level to customers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOne account consumes the server
Use the panel’s process and resource controls to identify the workload. Contact the customer, remediate or migrate the application, and revise the package or acceptable-use rule if the demand is legitimate but incompatible with shared hosting.
Automation creates inconsistent orders
Review API permissions, package mappings, payment callbacks, retry behavior and idempotency. Test duplicate callbacks and interrupted provisioning so a network timeout cannot produce multiple accounts or an unpaid active service.
