You can start a WooCommerce dropshipping store without buying inventory in advance, but you still operate the retail business. Your store must provide a secure checkout, accurate product and delivery information, lawful products, customer support, refunds and tax handling. The practical sequence is: prepare WordPress hosting, install and configure WooCommerce, vet suppliers, connect their inventory and order workflow, publish trust and policy pages, test every order state, then launch with a small catalogue.

What a WooCommerce dropshipping store actually does

In a dropshipping model, your WooCommerce site takes the customer’s order and payment while a supplier stores and dispatches the product. You do not normally purchase stock until an order exists. The supplier may send the parcel directly to the customer, but the customer relationship remains yours: your business sets the public price, makes the delivery promise, handles support and refunds, and is accountable for the products it sells.

Dropshipping reduces warehouse work and upfront inventory exposure. It does not remove product-safety duties, consumer-law obligations, taxes, customs charges, chargeback risk or the need to resolve late, damaged and incorrect deliveries. Treat the supplier as an operational partner, not as a substitute for your own checks.

Plan the store before installing anything

Choose a narrow first catalogue

Start with a small group of products that share an audience and shipping profile. For a video-games site, that might be desk accessories, controller storage or other clearly defined peripherals rather than a random general store. A focused catalogue makes product research, photography, support scripts and advertising easier to control. Do not list an item until you can obtain its specifications, safety information, realistic dispatch time and returns instructions.

Calculate landed cost, not just supplier price

Set a provisional retail price only after calculating the complete cost of fulfilling one order:

  • Supplier product price.
  • Shipping to the customer and any packaging charges.
  • Import duties, VAT or other destination taxes that you, rather than the customer, must collect or pay.
  • Payment-processing fees.
  • Expected refunds, replacements and damaged parcels.
  • Advertising and customer-acquisition cost.

Use the result to decide whether the product can support a sustainable contribution margin. A low wholesale price can be misleading if delivery is slow, tracking is unavailable or cross-border charges create expensive refunds.

Decide where you will sell

List the countries or regions you can serve before configuring shipping. Supplier warehouse location, delivery-time variance, language requirements, product markings and tax rules differ by destination. A product suitable for one market may require different warnings, certifications or packaging in another.

Technical prerequisites for WordPress and WooCommerce

Obtain a domain and WordPress hosting that supports HTTPS, backups and a staging environment. The WooCommerce listing’s published baseline records PHP 7.4 or greater, MySQL 5.5.5 or MariaDB 10.1 or greater, and WordPress 7.0 or greater. It also recommends a 256 MB PHP memory limit and HTTPS. These values are version-sensitive; check the current plugin listing and your host’s compatibility information immediately before installation.

Requirement Published baseline or recommendation Why it matters
PHP 7.4 or greater Runs WordPress, WooCommerce and extensions.
Database MySQL 5.5.5 or greater, or MariaDB 10.1 or greater Stores products, orders, customers and settings.
WordPress 7.0 or greater in the cited listing Provides the content-management platform; recheck the current compatibility listing because requirements change.
PHP memory 256 MB recommended Leaves headroom for the shop, payment gateway and supplier integration.
HTTPS Recommended; a valid SSL certificate is required by most payment gateways Encrypts checkout traffic and supports payment authorization.

Before adding products, confirm that your host can issue or install a valid certificate, run scheduled backups and restore them, and provide adequate performance and support. A staging copy is valuable when changing payment, tax or supplier extensions.

Install WordPress and WooCommerce

  1. Register your domain and provision HTTPS-capable WordPress hosting.
  2. Install WordPress and sign in to the WordPress dashboard.
  3. Open Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for WooCommerce, choose the official plugin and select Install Now.
  4. Select Activate and complete the WooCommerce setup flow.
  5. Set the store address, currency, selling locations and whether you sell physical goods.
  6. Configure payment methods, shipping zones and rates, and your tax approach.

Do not treat the setup wizard’s defaults as a finished store. Open the resulting settings and verify every destination, currency, rate and payment status. A shippable order needs a functioning cart, checkout, payment method and shipping method. WooCommerce compliance guidance also states that a valid SSL certificate protects personal and payment information and is needed by most payment gateways.

Configure checkout, payments, shipping and tax

Checkout and payments

Place a test product in the cart and confirm that the checkout requests only information you need to fulfil the order. Connect a payment gateway that supports your business location and chosen currency, then complete its verification and payout requirements. Check that successful authorization creates a WooCommerce order, while a declined or abandoned payment does not trigger a supplier purchase.

Shipping zones and delivery promises

Create a shipping zone for each group of destinations with the same service and price. Use the supplier’s realistic dispatch and transit times, including weekends, customs delays and handling time. If a supplier quotes a range, publish the range rather than an optimistic single date. Explain tracking availability and what happens when a parcel is delayed.

Taxes and customs

Choose a tax approach with qualified local advice. Cross-border sales can involve import VAT, customs duties, marketplace or distance-selling rules and registration thresholds. EU consignments that qualify for the Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS) may follow different collection and reporting procedures; customers can otherwise be charged VAT or customs amounts on delivery. Rules vary by country and change, so do not promise tax-inclusive delivery until your obligations and supplier shipping terms are confirmed.

Vet suppliers before listing products

Supplier selection is the central risk decision. Request written answers and evidence rather than relying on a marketplace description.

Supplier due-diligence checklist

  • Inventory: Ask how often stock feeds update, what happens when an item sells out and whether safety stock can be reserved.
  • Documentation: Obtain specifications, certifications, conformity markings, warnings, manuals and required languages for every destination.
  • Location and handling: Confirm warehouse country, dispatch cut-off times, processing days, carrier hand-off and whether parcels can use neutral or branded packing.
  • Delivery: Record normal and worst-case transit times, tracking coverage, split-shipment behavior and customs responsibilities.
  • Returns: Agree who pays for a change-of-mind return, a defect, transit damage or a wrong item, and where the customer sends it.
  • Support: Establish escalation contacts and response-time expectations for missing tracking, address corrections and recalls.
  • Data and security: Understand what customer data the supplier receives, how it is transferred and how access is restricted.

Test with samples

Order samples to your own address before launch. Inspect the product, packaging, instructions, serial or batch information and actual delivery time. This is not a substitute for legal certification, but it can reveal misleading descriptions, poor packaging and unusable tracking. Keep the supplier’s written commitments and your sample observations with the product record.

Connect suppliers to WooCommerce

You can operate manually, exchange files, or use an integration. Choose the simplest method that provides reliable stock, price and order data; automation is not automatically safer.

Workflow How it works Best use Main control risk
Manual Copy orders to the supplier and enter tracking in WooCommerce. Very small catalogues or an early pilot. Typing errors and slow stock updates.
CSV inventory exchange Import supplier-provided stock and price files on an agreed schedule. Suppliers without an API. Stale files, inconsistent SKUs or column changes.
API or extension Synchronize products, orders, stock and tracking through software. Higher order volume and repeatable processes. Incorrect mappings can propagate wrong prices or availability quickly.
Email notification Send a structured order email for supplier fulfilment. Suppliers that cannot accept an API. Missed messages and weak status visibility.

What the official WooCommerce Dropshipping extension can handle

The official WooCommerce Dropshipping extension describes product-to-supplier assignment, supplier CSV inventory import, automated order notifications, supplier-restricted order views, packing slips and collection of tracking numbers and carriers. Its product information also describes an AliExpress order-automation flow. Treat those capabilities as tools to configure and test, not as proof that a supplier’s data is accurate.

  1. Install the extension on staging and create supplier records.
  2. Assign each product and variation to the correct supplier, including a fallback decision for discontinued items.
  3. Map supplier SKUs, stock fields, prices, shipping services and image or description fields before importing.
  4. Import a small CSV and compare every changed product with the supplier’s source file.
  5. Send a test order notification and confirm that the supplier receives only the data needed to fulfil it.
  6. Require a tracking number and carrier before marking an order fulfilled, unless the service genuinely has no tracking.
  7. Keep automation paused until stock, price, shipping and tracking checks pass repeatedly on real or sandbox orders.

Restrict supplier accounts to their own orders and review access whenever a relationship ends. A software integration cannot transfer your responsibility for a defective product, a missing parcel or an inaccurate delivery promise.

Create product pages that set accurate expectations

Rewrite supplier material into clear, original pages and verify it against the actual sample or documentation. Every physical-product page should make the buying decision and fulfilment terms understandable:

  • Product name, model or SKU, dimensions, materials, compatibility and included items.
  • Power, battery, age or use restrictions and any safety warnings that apply.
  • Available variations and the stock status for each variation.
  • Dispatch location, handling time, estimated delivery range and tracking information.
  • Total price, applicable taxes or delivery charges and any customs responsibility the customer may face.
  • Returns, refunds, damaged-item reporting and warranty route.

Do not claim certification, compatibility or delivery speed unless the supplier’s evidence supports it. If a product requires a warning or destination-specific language, include it before checkout rather than hiding it in a post-purchase email.

Publish the trust and compliance pages

Make these pages easy to find from the footer and checkout:

  • Contact: Business name, contact method, support hours and a reliable response channel.
  • Shipping policy: Processing time, delivery ranges by zone, tracking, split shipments, customs and what to do when an order is late.
  • Returns and refunds: Eligibility, deadlines, return address, damaged-item evidence, refund timing and who pays each type of return.
  • Privacy notice: What customer and order data you collect, why you share it with payment providers and suppliers, retention and customer rights.
  • Terms: Ordering, payment, delivery, cancellations, limitations and governing-law information appropriate to your jurisdiction.
  • Product safety disclosures: Warnings, age restrictions, certifications and instructions required for your destinations.

Policies must match the actual supplier process. A promise of free returns is not workable if the supplier accepts only international returns or refuses defective units.

Run a complete test order before launch

Use a low-risk product and a real or controlled payment test. Record each result instead of checking only whether the order appears in the dashboard.

  1. Select a product and variation, add it to the cart and verify the displayed price and stock.
  2. Enter a test destination in every shipping zone you intend to serve and confirm the correct rate and delivery message.
  3. Check tax calculation, total cost, currency and required customer fields.
  4. Authorize payment and confirm the order status, customer receipt and merchant notification.
  5. Verify that the supplier receives the correct SKU, quantity, address and shipping service, with no unnecessary personal data.
  6. Confirm inventory decrements in WooCommerce and in the supplier feed.
  7. Enter a carrier and tracking number, then check the customer tracking update and order timeline.
  8. Test cancellation before dispatch and a refund after authorization. Confirm the payment gateway, WooCommerce order and customer email agree.
  9. Repeat with a declined payment, an out-of-stock item and a damaged-delivery support case using your documented procedure.

Do not advertise until ambiguous statuses, duplicate notifications and failed webhooks are resolved. Keep a written rollback procedure for disabling the supplier integration if it begins sending incorrect orders.

Launch in a controlled way

Start small

Publish a limited set of products from suppliers that passed your checks. Watch delivery times, inventory mismatches, support volume, chargebacks, returns, refunds and contribution margin before adding more products or destinations.

Monitor the signals that matter

  • Orders accepted by the supplier versus orders requiring manual correction.
  • Stock and price mismatches between the feed and the storefront.
  • Dispatch time and delivery-time variance by supplier and destination.
  • Tracking coverage and parcels with no movement.
  • Refund, return, damage and chargeback reasons.
  • Support requests per order and time to resolution.
  • Contribution margin after shipping, taxes, payment fees, refunds and advertising.

Pause a product when safety documentation expires, stock data becomes unreliable, delivery promises are missed repeatedly or the margin cannot absorb normal refunds. Expansion should follow reliable operational data, not simply a higher advertising budget.

Legal, safety and retailer-of-record responsibilities

Your customer bought from your store, so you are the retailer in that relationship even when another company ships the parcel. Confirm the product-safety laws, certifications, markings, warnings, language rules, privacy requirements, consumer cancellation rights and tax registrations that apply in every destination. Keep records of supplier documentation, batch or model information, complaints and corrective actions.

Platform guidance describes the same principle: a dropship merchant must comply with laws and regulations applying to the sale of products as a retailer. That guidance is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice. Obtain advice from a qualified tax or legal professional before cross-border launch, particularly where import VAT, IOSS, customs collection or regulated products are involved.

Troubleshoot common launch failures

WooCommerce will not install or pages fail

Compare the host’s PHP, database, WordPress and memory settings with the published baseline. Increase available memory within your host’s supported limits, disable conflicting extensions on staging and restore a known-good backup before changing production.

Checkout has no shipping method

Check that the customer address matches a configured shipping zone, the product is marked as shippable, a rate exists for that zone and the currency and weight rules are valid. A complete checkout cannot fulfil a physical order without a shipping method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Payment succeeds but the supplier receives nothing

Inspect the WooCommerce order status, notification logs and integration queue. Confirm that the product has a supplier assignment and that the payment-success trigger is not filtered by a custom status. Place another controlled test after correcting the mapping; do not manually replay an order until you know whether the first notification was delayed.

Imported stock or prices are wrong

Stop the import, preserve the source file and compare SKU, variation, currency and delimiter mappings. Restore the last correct product data, then test a few rows before re-enabling scheduled imports. Do not advertise while a stale feed can oversell products.

Tracking is missing or a parcel is late

Ask the supplier for the carrier hand-off date and a valid tracking event. Update the customer according to your published policy, offer the remedies required by applicable law and record the incident against the supplier. Do not mark an order complete merely because a label was created.

A customer reports damage or a safety issue

Stop selling the affected SKU if the report suggests a broader defect, preserve the customer’s evidence and notify the supplier. Provide the refund, replacement or other remedy required by your policy and local law, and investigate whether a warning, recall or destination restriction is needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Supplier and integration decision framework

Score each candidate consistently rather than choosing on wholesale price alone. Weight the factors according to your products and destinations:

  • Inventory accuracy and update frequency.
  • Product documentation and safety evidence.
  • Warehouse location and delivery-time variance.
  • Tracking coverage and carrier quality.
  • Returns and damaged-item handling.
  • Integration method: CSV, API or email.
  • Order-automation controls and ability to pause or review orders.
  • Customer support and escalation speed.
  • Total landed cost.
  • Data-security practices and supplier-account permissions.

For hosting, compare HTTPS support, PHP and database compatibility, backups and restoration, performance, technical support and staging. The cheapest plan is a poor choice if a failed restore or unsupported PHP version interrupts checkout.

What success looks like before you scale

A store is ready for broader promotion when a customer can discover an in-stock product, understand its specifications and delivery range, pay securely, receive accurate order messages, get usable tracking, and obtain a prompt remedy for cancellation, delay, damage or return. Your supplier must be able to reproduce that outcome repeatedly, while your records show that taxes, safety evidence and customer-data handling are under control. If any one of those links is uncertain, keep the catalogue and destination list small until it is fixed.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
