Your first upload can be a regular video or a Short; focus on making it clear, original, and true to what its title and thumbnail promise. Use Analytics to learn from viewers’ responses rather than expecting a guaranteed growth formula.
1. Choose a subject and a viewer
Decide who you want to help or entertain, then write down what a video will give that person. For a gaming channel, that could be a beginner-friendly explanation, a specific challenge run, or commentary on a game you know well. A defined audience and a concrete promise make it easier to decide what belongs in the video.
There is no proven topic or posting schedule that guarantees growth. YouTube says discovery systems use multiple signals, including what viewers watch or skip, watch time, likes and dislikes, “not interested” feedback, and satisfaction surveys. 2. Create your channel
- Sign in to YouTube with a Google Account.
- Choose Create Account and select whether the channel is for personal or business use.
- Complete the channel setup. You can then upload videos, create Shorts and playlists, and comment as a creator.

3. Choose the first video format
Pick the format that fits the idea and the way you want viewers to watch it. Neither format is established as a guaranteed path to growth.

On Shorts, YouTube says views began counting starts and replays without a minimum watch time on March 31, 2025. “Engaged views” remain available in Analytics to compare viewers who chose to continue watching. 4. Make a clear video with the equipment you have
A smartphone is enough to start, especially for Shorts. YouTube’s April 8, 2025 guide describes the phone as the primary tool; a tripod can help stabilize a shot and a ring light can improve lighting, but neither is required. You do not need to buy gear before finding out what kind of videos you want to make. YouTube’s Shorts equipment guide
- Give the video one distinct idea, with enough useful or entertaining substance to deliver on it.
- Use a title, description, and thumbnail that accurately represent what happens in the video.
- For a Short, make the opening seconds quickly establish why someone might keep watching.
- For a gaming video, make sure commentary, explanation, or editing adds the value you intend; do not assume that simply repeating another creator’s material makes it your own.
5. Upload, publish, and learn from the response
- Choose the appropriate upload route: the standard Create flow for a longer video, or the YouTube mobile app or vertical-video upload route for a Short.
- Add a title, description, and thumbnail that set accurate expectations.
- Publish, then use YouTube Analytics to understand how existing uploads are performing and inform future ideas.
- Try a posting rhythm you can sustain, then adjust based on the work you can produce and what you learn. YouTube does not prescribe a universal cadence or guarantee growth from one.

6. Keep monetization and originality in perspective
Ad revenue sharing is a later milestone, not an expected result of a first upload. YouTube’s Partner Program overview, accessed October 3, 2026, lists two full ad-revenue eligibility routes: 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Shorts Feed watch hours do not count toward the 4,000-hour long-form threshold. Meeting a threshold is not automatic acceptance.
YouTube also lists policy compliance, availability of YPP in the creator’s country or region, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, access to advanced features, and an active AdSense for YouTube account among the requirements. Eligible channels apply in YouTube Studio and are reviewed. Check the current YouTube Partner Program eligibility page before planning around these changeable rules.
Make work that is genuinely yours
YouTube’s monetization policies expect original content and say borrowed material must be changed significantly to become the creator’s own. The July 15, 2025 policy update clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material is categorized as “inauthentic content”; YouTube said this type of content was already ineligible under the existing rules, and that the update did not change the reused-content policy.
