Windows services run in a separate, noninteractive context; OBS documents a safer starting point: launch it automatically in the intended Windows user session with --startstreaming and set the correct working directory. That starts OBS streaming, but it does not by itself guarantee that YouTube’s broadcast is public or that the whole setup recovers from every failure.
Why OBS is not a typical Windows service
“Run as a service” is often used to mean “start in the background,” but a Windows service is a specific operating-system process model. Microsoft says services are designed to run unattended without a graphical user interface, cannot directly interact with users in modern Windows, and run in Terminal Services session 0. OBS Studio is a desktop application whose scenes, sources, and controls are ordinarily used in an interactive session. Treating it as a service can therefore leave it without the session or desktop resources its setup expects.
Microsoft’s Interactive Services documentation says, “Services cannot directly interact with a user as of Windows Vista,” and cautions against interactive services in new code. This is why a service wrapper should not be assumed to make OBS work reliably as a service. The official OBS automation guidance supports launching the application automatically; it does not document a generic wrapper recipe or a complete unattended-recovery design.
Use OBS’s documented automatic-launch option
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. For automated launches on Windows, including scheduled tasks, OBS also says to set the working directory (“Start in…”) to the folder containing obs64.exe. These are the documented building blocks; exact Task Scheduler configuration and recovery policies depend on the machine and have not been established as a universal recipe.

- Prepare OBS first. Install and configure OBS in the Windows account that will run the stream. Set up the intended scene, sources, audio, encoder, and YouTube service, then test a normal manual stream before automating it.
- Locate the OBS executable. Find
obs64.exein the OBS installation folder. You will need its full path and the containing folder. - Configure the automated launch. Use the Windows automation method appropriate for your installation to launch OBS with
--startstreaming. Set its working directory to the folder containingobs64.exe, as required by OBS’s Launch Parameters documentation. - Choose when it should run. Decide whether OBS should start when the intended user signs in or at another point in your startup process. A launch at sign-in is not the same as a boot-time service: the account, session, permissions, and desktop sources still matter. Validate the behavior on the actual machine rather than assuming the process will have everything it needs.
- Decide what “automatic” means.
--startstreamingtells OBS to begin sending its configured output when it launches. If you want an operator to check the scene or YouTube broadcast first, do not configure an unattended launch that immediately starts streaming.
OBS’s page was published on 2021-05-30. It documents the launch parameter and working-directory requirement, not a guaranteed boot-to-broadcast setup, restart-on-failure policy, or method for maintaining sources after sign-out.
Configure OBS for YouTube without hard-coding assumptions
Use OBS’s current YouTube service integration and the stream key from your YouTube Live setup. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in screenshots, logs, task arguments, or shared configuration. If it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s current Live controls.

OBS’s maintained service configuration lists YouTube – RTMPS, the primary endpoint rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2, and backup endpoint rtmps://b.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2?backup=1. It lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 as supported codecs, a 2-second keyframe interval, a maximum video bitrate of 51,000 kbps, and a maximum audio bitrate of 160 kbps. These are service metadata in OBS’s maintained service configuration, accessed in 2026—not a requirement to stream at the maximum or a guarantee that every encoder, channel, or connection can use every listed option. Check the settings in your installed OBS version and select settings appropriate to your encoder, upload capacity, and YouTube’s current guidance.
Do not copy the endpoint into a permanent configuration on the assumption it cannot change. The OBS configuration is maintained and may be updated; use the current YouTube entry in OBS and verify the connection in YouTube Live Control Room. This configuration information is for ordinary streaming; HDR is a separate case.

HDR is a specialist workflow
YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance specifies OBS 30.1 or later for its described RTMPS HDR workflow, along with compatible HDR input and hardware HEVC settings. That minimum applies to the documented HDR workflow, not to ordinary SDR streaming. Do not apply HDR-specific encoder settings to an SDR stream.
Confirm that YouTube is actually live
Starting an OBS process and sending output are not the same as proving that viewers can watch a correctly configured broadcast. The intended YouTube event may not be scheduled or public, and an OBS status indicator alone does not confirm the viewer-facing result.

After enabling automation, check the current YouTube Live Control Room and verify the event’s audience, schedule, and live state using YouTube’s present interface. OBS’s forum guide to YouTube streaming was created on 2015-07-26 and contains dated interface details, so do not rely on its old click-by-click instructions as current UI guidance.

Continuous operation depends on more than OBS opening. The sources, capture devices, audio, network, Windows session, YouTube event, and recovery behavior all need to work together. Official OBS and Microsoft materials cited here do not establish a universal configuration for restart-on-failure, GPU capture in a locked session, sign-out behavior, power-loss recovery, or YouTube’s handling of very long streams.

- Run the stream manually and check the picture and sound in YouTube’s viewer-facing preview or broadcast.
- Restart the actual Windows machine and observe whether the intended account and session start as expected, OBS opens from the configured working directory, and all sources initialize.
- Confirm that OBS begins sending output only if that is the behavior you chose, then confirm YouTube shows the intended broadcast in the intended state.
- Test your chosen recovery path deliberately and safely. Determine how you will detect an OBS crash, lost network, or YouTube disconnect, and who or what is responsible for restarting or checking the broadcast.
- Repeat checks after changes to Windows, OBS, drivers, scenes, sources, encoder settings, or YouTube’s streaming controls.
This is a validation checklist, not a claim that a particular Task Scheduler setup or recovery configuration has been tested. Keep an operator-accessible way to stop the stream and verify what viewers see.
Troubleshoot common startup and stream failures
- OBS does not open from automation: Verify the executable path and set the working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe. OBS specifically documents that working-directory requirement for automated Windows launches. - OBS opens but does not stream: Check that the launch includes
--startstreaming, the intended OBS profile and scene are loaded, and the YouTube service and stream key are valid. Confirm the result in OBS and YouTube rather than inferring it from the process starting. - YouTube receives output but the broadcast is not visible as expected: Check the current Live Control Room event, audience, schedule, and live state. Sending output does not itself establish that a broadcast is public or correctly scheduled.
- Sources are blank or audio is missing after reboot, lock, or sign-out: Test each source under the exact session and startup conditions you plan to use. The cited official guidance does not guarantee desktop capture, GPU resources, or device availability in every such state.
- The stream disconnects and stays offline: A launch parameter is not a complete restart or reconnect policy. Identify how a disconnect is detected, what component is expected to recover, and how you will verify YouTube is receiving output again.
- Stream settings are rejected or unstable: Do not blindly use OBS’s listed maximum bitrates. Recheck the current service settings, encoder capabilities, YouTube requirements, and available upload bandwidth; change one setting at a time and retest.
- An HDR setup does not behave as expected: Check that the source and encoder support the HDR workflow and that you meet YouTube’s stated OBS 30.1 minimum for its RTMPS HDR instructions. Do not use those settings as a fix for an SDR stream.
