You can stream a prerecorded video to YouTube without leaving a home computer on: run an encoder on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) VM, connect it to the YouTube event using the event’s RTMPS server URL and stream key, then monitor the preview and stream health. Before relying on OCI Always Free compute in Mumbai, confirm that Mumbai is your tenancy’s home region and that an eligible VM shape has capacity.
What you need before you start
- An OCI tenancy and a VM capable of reading the video and sustaining the selected encoding profile.
- A route from the VM to the public internet and outbound rules that permit the encoder’s connection.
- A YouTube live event, its RTMPS server URL and its stream key.
- A prerecorded file and encoder software configured for YouTube’s supported settings.
This is an outbound streaming workflow: the VM sends the video to YouTube. You do not need to open inbound ports for YouTube ingest. The procedure below follows official YouTube and Oracle guidance; a particular VM shape, operating system, encoder command, or video file has not been tested here. 1. Check OCI region, capacity and networking
Confirm Mumbai eligibility
If you intend to use Always Free compute, Oracle says those instances must be created in your tenancy’s home region. Check the home region in your tenancy and confirm in the OCI Console that an eligible shape is available there. Oracle also notes that temporary host-capacity shortages can prevent provisioning. Do not assume that a Mumbai location guarantees a particular shape, availability, or encoding performance. Oracle Cloud Free Tier
Make sure the VM can reach YouTube
For a public subnet, the network needs an internet gateway, a route rule to it, and applicable security rules; the VM also needs a public IP. In an existing network, inspect the subnet route table and the security list or network security group. OCI’s default security list permits stateful egress, but custom rules may differ. A private VM needs a configured egress path, such as a NAT gateway. 2. Create the YouTube live event and retrieve its credentials
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live event for the intended channel and audience.
- Find the event’s stream settings and retrieve the server URL and stream key. Choose the RTMPS URL for encrypted ingest; YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default.
- Copy the exact RTMPS URL and pair it with that event’s stream key in your encoder. YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint uses TLS over port 443. Do not substitute an RTMP URL, guess an endpoint, or mismatch the URL and key. YouTube Live Streaming API: RTMPS
Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of public logs, screenshots, source control, and shell history. If an encoder implements TLS itself rather than using a standard encoder interface, YouTube’s documentation says it must send the destination hostname through SNI. Using the exact URL provided in Live Control Room avoids manually constructing the endpoint.
3. Configure an encoder on the VM
Choose a profile the VM can sustain
Install or use encoder software on the VM, select the prerecorded file as the input, and configure the YouTube RTMPS destination and stream key. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select the bitrate from YouTube’s current resolution-specific guidance rather than assuming one value fits every video. YouTube encoder settings

The selected profile must be achievable by the VM as well as acceptable to YouTube. Higher resolutions and frame rates require more sustained upload bandwidth and can require more encoding capacity. YouTube recommends keeping about 20% bandwidth headroom; its guidance is not a guarantee that a particular OCI shape or network route can sustain a given stream. Do not copy an unverified command
The exact encoder command depends on the VM operating system, installed encoder version, file codecs, audio tracks, duration, and target profile. No specific FFmpeg command or Linux image has been validated for this workflow, so use your encoder’s current documentation and inspect its output for errors rather than pasting a generic command. Ensure it reads the file, encodes or passes through compatible audio and video, and publishes to the event’s RTMPS URL with the event key.

4. Test the event and run the broadcast
- For a test, use an unlisted or private event when that suits your audience and channel setup.
- Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that both moving video and audio are present.
- Check the stream-health panel and watch for connection, bitrate, or encoding warnings. If the stream is unhealthy, adjust the profile or investigate the network before making the event public.
- When ready, start or schedule the event as intended. Keep the health view available and confirm the event appears on the channel or watch page.
- For a prerecorded file, check that the encoder reaches the end of the file and that the event ends as intended.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a longer stream will be archived. If preservation matters, keep a separate copy in local or object storage and verify the finished event in YouTube Studio. YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming
5. Troubleshoot common failures

| SSL or certificate error | Verify that the URL is the RTMPS endpoint and that the connection uses TLS on port 443. If the encoder creates a custom TLS connection, confirm it sends SNI with the destination hostname. |
| No preview or an unhealthy stream | Check that the URL and stream key belong to the same event, that the video and audio settings are compatible, and that keyframes and bitrate meet YouTube’s guidance. If the VM or route cannot sustain the profile, lower the target bitrate or resolution and test again. |
| VM creation fails | Check that the selected region is the tenancy’s home region if using Always Free compute, then review shape eligibility, quota, and current host capacity in the console. |
| Broadcast ends without the expected archive | Check the event in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours; do not rely on it for a longer broadcast. |
The exact cause of a failed preview or unhealthy stream depends on the encoder output and YouTube diagnostics; use those details to distinguish a credential, networking, compatibility, or capacity problem. YouTube’s protocol and encoder references: RTMPS and encoder settings.

Oracle’s Always Free resource page lists 10 TB per month of outbound data for Always Free resources. Treat this as the published allowance, not a promise that every tenancy, region, shape, or usage pattern is eligible; confirm current terms and usage in your account. Even if the compute resource is eligible for Always Free, verify the video’s expected upload volume and the VM’s ability to encode before committing to a long broadcast. No particular OCI compute price or paid-instance total is established here.
