4 Lesser-Known Fantasy RPGs for Fans of Medieval Worlds

Four distinct medieval-fantasy picks: comic tactics, dark choices, an open world, and a story-led adventure in The Dark Eye.

For medieval-inspired fantasy beyond the genre’s biggest names, these four games offer sharply different experiences: comic turn-based party battles, a dark choice-driven CRPG, a large open-world adventure, and a narrative story in a tabletop setting. “Lesser-known” is subjective, so this is a fit-based shortlist—not an obscurity ranking.

At a glance: which game fits your taste?

Game Best fit Combat or format Tone and party Prerequisite
The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos Players who want fantasy-party comedy and tactical battles Turn-based tactical RPG Comic; team of seven fantasy archetypes None stated on the Steam listing
Tyranny Players drawn to dark fantasy and consequential choices Choice-driven CRPG Dark; protagonist serves the winning side of an evil conquest None stated on the Steam listing
Enderal: Forgotten Stories Players who want a separate, expansive fantasy world Open-world action RPG Dark, serious fantasy; a solo-led adventure Requires a legal copy of Skyrim; Skyrim Special Edition is not compatible
Forgotten Fables: Wolves on the Westwind Players interested in a narrative adventure in a tabletop-RPG world Narrative adventure Story-led; companion variation and alternate endings No video-game base title stated on the Ulisses Games page

The first three are PC-game recommendations. The fourth is a distinct narrative adventure tied to The Dark Eye, a European pen-and-paper fantasy RPG setting.

For comic tactical party combat: The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk

The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos is the pick for players who want their fantasy adventuring with a comic streak. Steam describes it as a single-player tactical RPG and introduces it as a “wacky heroic fantasy universe.”

Its party brings together seven familiar fantasy archetypes, each with an individual skill tree. Battles are turn-based, making party composition and tactical choices central to the experience. Choose it if you want a defined team and combat encounters to be the focus rather than an open world.

  • 🔁 HIGHLY REPLAYABLE WITH SCALABLE DIFFICULTY – New heroes, quests and challenges every time

For a dark, choice-driven CRPG: Tyranny

Tyranny starts from an unusual premise: the evil side has already won. Steam categorizes it as a story-driven single-player RPG, CRPG, dark fantasy, and villain-protagonist game. Its listing promises a story where choices matter, but that is store-page marketing language rather than an independent assessment of how much any individual decision changes the game.

This is the strongest match here for readers who want a grim setting and a role-playing story shaped by their decisions. Unlike Naheulbeuk, it is not pitched around a fixed team of seven fantasy archetypes and turn-based tactical party combat.

For a separate open world: Enderal: Forgotten Stories

Enderal: Forgotten Stories is a total-conversion mod with its own world, lore, and story. It offers the broadest open-world direction in this shortlist and is available free, but it is not a standalone download: you need a legal copy of Skyrim.

Check the edition before you buy or install: the Steam listing says Skyrim Special Edition does not work with Enderal. Confirm that you have the required compatible base-game edition rather than assuming any Skyrim version will do.

For fantasy through a tabletop setting: Forgotten Fables: Wolves on the Westwind

Forgotten Fables: Wolves on the Westwind is a narrative adventure set in The Dark Eye. Ulisses Games describes The Dark Eye as a European pen-and-paper fantasy RPG in its fifth edition. The page highlights companion variation and alternate endings, making this a fit for readers more interested in branching story and setting than in choosing among the three PC-game combat styles above.

How to choose

  • Pick Naheulbeuk for comedy, a defined adventuring party, and turn-based tactical fights.
  • Pick Tyranny for a dark fantasy CRPG built around a villainous premise and player choices.
  • Pick Enderal for a distinct open-world setting, provided you can meet its Skyrim edition requirement.
  • Pick Wolves on the Westwind for a story-first adventure in a tabletop fantasy world.

There is no evidence here for an objective “most obscure” or “best” winner. The useful distinction is what kind of medieval fantasy you want to play—and, for Enderal, whether you have the compatible base game.
