Start with Michael’s Meltdown mission
The Big Score is GTA 5’s final major story heist, targeting the Union Depository. Its planning mission follows Michael’s Meltdown. If Meltdown is still active or incomplete, finish it before looking for the heist marker. iGrandTheftAuto’s walkthrough describes the sequence; the mission database at GrandTheftAuto.World lists Meltdown as the previous mission.

Meet Lester at the Vanilla Unicorn
After Meltdown, go to the Planning the Big Score marker at the Vanilla Unicorn and meet Lester. The planning mission is where you choose the approach and crew. If you need to find the marker, check the map and story mission list for that location. GrandTheftAuto.World’s mission listing identifies Lester as the giver and the Vanilla Unicorn as the location.
Choose an approach and complete its setups
The approach you select determines the preparation missions that follow. Complete all four displayed setup missions for your choice; then start The Big Score finale when its story marker appears.

| Approach | Core plan | Crew requirement | Preparation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subtle | Move the gold using armored-car logistics. | A hacker is required. | Four approach-specific setup missions. |
| Obvious | Enter the vault using a drill-based plan. | A hacker is not required. | Four approach-specific setup missions. |
The approach and crew differences are described in the iGrandTheftAuto walkthrough and GrandTheftAuto.World mission listing. Choose based on the plan and crew requirement that suit you; either way, the setup missions must be completed before the finale.
If the planning marker is missing
- Verify that Michael has completed Meltdown, rather than assuming the mission is finished because you have reached its location or started it.
- Check the map and story mission list for Planning the Big Score at the Vanilla Unicorn.
- If it still does not appear, the available mission guides do not establish a guaranteed fix. They do not confirm that waiting a set amount of time, making a phone call, or switching characters will always trigger it.
Keep this separate from GTA Online
This sequence applies to GTA V’s single-player story, where Michael, Franklin, Trevor, and Lester are involved in The Big Score. GTA Online has separate heist systems; its apartment boards and online setup requirements are not steps for unlocking this story mission. The GTA Wiki’s overview describes The Big Score as the final major story heist.
