If you end the rite before accepting Mol’s request, her quest can no longer be started.
Before you start: earn Mol’s trust and accept the quest
Mol’s request is available through the tiefling children’s hideout. Build the children’s trust by helping them rather than threatening them. Relevant actions include resolving Meli’s locket conflict, saving Arabella, and rescuing Mirkon from the harpies. Rescuing Mirkon is identified as especially effective: he can point you to the hideout and give you its password. BG3 Wiki’s quest walkthrough lists these as ways to earn Mol’s respect.
- Find Mol in the tiefling hideout.
- Choose the dialogue option “Thought you might need help with something.”
- Agree to steal the Idol of Silvanus.
Accept this request before resolving the grove. Declining it locks you out of the quest and its reward; ending the rite before Mol assigns the quest also prevents you from starting it.
End the Rite of Thorns before taking the idol
The idol sits in the Sacred Pool at the center of the grove, where druids are conducting the Rite of Thorns. Taking it while the rite is active can make the druids attack the tieflings and turn hostile toward your party. Tiefling deaths can also jeopardize the “Save the Refugees” quest. The item’s BG3 Wiki page confirms its location in the pool.

- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
After accepting Mol’s request, resolve the grove conflict to end the rite. The quest walkthrough names three routes: investigate Kagha, save the First Druid, or defeat the goblins. Once the rite has ended, taking the idol no longer causes the immediate grove-wide combat trigger described for an active rite.
Take the idol and deal with any confrontation
With the rite ended, go to the Sacred Pool and take the Idol of Silvanus. If you are caught, the quest walkthrough describes a DC 15 Deception or Intimidation check as a way to avert combat. It also describes stealing the idol and fast-travelling away before a confrontation. These are alternatives, not guarantees that every nearby character will react the same way.

Stealth-killing druids around the circle is another documented approach, but it is a combat route with different risks—not the lower-risk plan for protecting the refugees.
Return the idol to Mol for the reward
Bring the idol back to Mol to complete her request and receive the Ring of Protection. The quest also awards inspiration based on background: Heretic for Criminal characters and Idolatry for Urchin characters. Gamer Guides’ walkthrough provides secondary corroboration for the quest and reward context.
