In OBS, enable Loop Playlist on a VLC Video source for a playlist, or enable Loop on a Media Source if you are repeating one file. Then test the actual end-to-start boundary: OBS documents that looping restarts playback after the media runs out, but it does not promise a gapless handoff between files.
Choose the right OBS loop control
For a playlist: VLC Video
- In OBS, add or select the VLC Video source that contains your playlist.
- In the source properties, confirm the intended files appear in the playlist and are in the order you expect.
- Enable Loop Playlist. OBS defines this option as specifying whether the source should restart after it has run out of media files (OBS Media Sources documentation).
- Leave Shuffle off if the order matters. Shuffle is separate from looping.
VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. OBS’s documentation says that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
For one repeating file: Media Source
- Select the OBS Media Source containing the single file.
- Enable its Loop option in the source properties.
- Test the end and restart of that file. This control repeats one source; it is not the playlist control for several files.
Test the file boundary before changing streaming settings
Looping controls what happens after playback ends. It does not remove silence encoded into a file, guarantee that the next item is playable, or promise a zero-gap transition between differently encoded files. Check the exact pair that goes silent:
- Play the final seconds of the ending file followed immediately by the opening seconds of the next file. Listen for silence at the end, at the start, or between them.
- Confirm that both files contain the intended audio and that the next playlist item actually starts.
- In OBS, check that the source is not paused or stopped and that its visibility and playback behavior are as expected.
- Watch the OBS audio meters across the transition. If they stop moving, investigate the source, file, or audio routing before blaming YouTube.
- Check the OBS program output and make a private or unlisted test stream. Listen to the delivered result, not only the local preview.
These checks narrow down where the silence enters the chain: the media, OBS playback or routing, encoding, or YouTube delivery.

Check OBS output and YouTube stream health
If the next file starts and OBS meters continue moving but viewers still hear silence, inspect the encoded output and YouTube’s stream-health status. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video similar to the actual stream and monitoring stream health; those checks assess the stream sent to YouTube, not the playlist’s loop setting. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.
Do not switch ingestion protocols as the first response to a badly configured or silent local playlist. HLS has its own segment and rolling-playlist requirements and higher latency; consult YouTube’s HLS setup guidance only if you are using HLS ingestion.

Separate playlist continuity from encoder recovery
A restart policy can help recover an encoder process that crashes or hangs, but it does not make a playlist transition gapless or correct a loop setting. One operator’s FFmpeg deployment notes describe systemd restart behavior, a frame-progress watchdog, and scheduled restarts as separate resilience layers; that is an implementation example, not a universal recipe or guarantee. If you use FFmpeg on a VPS, treat process supervision and file-boundary playback as different problems, and monitor both.
