First find out whether the stutter is caused by encoding lag or by frames being dropped on the way to YouTube: check the encoder’s CPU load and statistics, compare its preview or local recording with the delivered stream, and read YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. If the local output stutters or the encoder reports lag, reduce the encoding and scene workload or provide more sustained CPU capacity. If the local output is clean but YouTube reports delivery trouble, investigate the VPS’s outbound connection and bitrate capacity instead.
Diagnose where the stutter starts
Do not treat every visible hitch as a CPU problem. An overloaded encoder can fail to produce frames on time; an unstable or undersized outbound connection can fail to deliver encoded frames reliably. The remedies differ. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking CPU load on the encoder, while OBS distinguishes encoding lag from dropped frames caused by an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the selected bitrate.
- Check the encoder while the stutter is happening. Note CPU load and any encoder warnings or error counters. Look for encoding lag or a growing number of frames missed during encoding. Exact labels and menu paths depend on the encoder application and version.
- Compare local output with the remote stream. Watch the encoder preview or inspect a local recording made during the same period. If it already stutters, investigate encoding, rendering, or the VPS workload. If local output is smooth but the YouTube stream is not, focus on outbound delivery and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Review the stream-health status and messages around the time of the problem. A healthy preview does not establish that the VPS connection to YouTube is healthy.
- Record the conditions for a repeatable test. Note resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder preset, bitrate, CPU load, and whether the stream was moving or relatively static. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which change helped.
OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting documentation summarizes the network case this way: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” That describes delivery drops; it does not mean that lowering bitrate will necessarily fix CPU-bound encoding lag.
Reduce CPU work when encoding is the bottleneck
Make small, controlled changes and compare encoder statistics under the same conditions. YouTube and OBS both identify encoder resources and frame rate as relevant performance considerations. Resolution, frame rate, software-encoder preset, and extra processing are practical variables to test.

Lower resolution or frame rate
Try a lower output resolution, a lower frame rate, or both. Reduce one first, then check whether encoding lag falls and whether the resulting picture remains acceptable. A lower frame rate means fewer frames must be produced each second; a smaller output frame also reduces work for many encoding workflows. The amount of CPU saved depends on the encoder, codec, settings, and source.
Use a faster software-encoder preset
If the software encoder offers presets with different speed and quality trade-offs, test a faster, less CPU-intensive preset. Record the existing choice before changing it. Faster presets can reduce encoding work but may reduce compression efficiency or visual quality at a given bitrate; check the result rather than assuming it is equivalent.

Simplify processing and check competing workloads
- Remove filters, overlays, or other processing that is not necessary for the broadcast, then compare statistics.
- Check whether other jobs on the VPS are consuming CPU during the stutter. If safe to do so, pause or reschedule nonessential workloads for a controlled test.
- Do not assume GPU-rendering advice applies to a CPU-saturated, headless VPS. The useful change depends on what is actually doing the work in your specific pipeline.
Keep a brief before-and-after record of the settings and encoder statistics. If a change improves encoding but causes an unacceptable picture or motion cadence, revert it and test a different variable.
Match YouTube output settings to the connection
Bitrate is especially important when the VPS cannot reliably upload at the configured rate. Lowering it can help a delivery bottleneck, but it is not a guaranteed remedy for CPU saturation. For CPU-bound encoding, resolution, frame rate, and encoder preset are more direct variables to investigate.

YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; its stated keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. The following are the recommended ingestion bitrates in the YouTube guidance retrieved on October 3, 2026. They are platform recommendations, not measurements of the CPU a particular VPS will need or guarantees of viewer playback quality.
| Output | AV1 / H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Use a codec and settings supported by the encoder and the chosen YouTube ingest path. YouTube lists H.264, HEVC (H.265), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, but that does not establish that every encoder, VPS image, or source-to-YouTube workflow supports all three. Check your actual encoder’s options before switching codec. Consult YouTube’s current encoder-settings table when configuring a stream, since platform guidance can change.

Check whether the VPS can sustain the workload
If encoding lag continues after reducing the work, determine what CPU capacity the VPS actually makes available during a sustained stream. A plan’s advertised allocation alone may not explain performance under sustained load; provider limits or shared CPU behavior may also matter. Compare measurements during the real workload rather than judging from a brief idle reading.
There are three broad escalation paths. The right choice depends on measured encoding load, sustained CPU availability, quality requirements, compatibility, operating complexity, and total cost. No particular VPS provider, plan, appliance, price, or performance result is established here.

| Option | When it makes sense | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Keep software encoding on the VPS | Controlled reductions in resolution, frame rate, preset, or processing leave enough headroom and acceptable output. | Confirm that the VPS sustains the workload for the full stream, not just a short test. |
| Allocate more VPS CPU | Measurements show the current CPU allocation is the limit and the provider can supply more sustained capacity. | Check recurring cost and whether the change addresses the actual limit rather than a connection or configuration problem. |
| Encode on separate hardware | The source can reach a compatible hardware encoder, and that device can send the required output to YouTube. | Confirm the input, protocol, codec, output, and operating requirements for the exact source-to-YouTube pipeline before buying or moving equipment. |
YouTube recognizes hardware encoders as an option, but that does not establish compatibility for a particular VPS workflow. Confirm how the source reaches the encoder and how the resulting stream reaches YouTube before choosing this path.
Test the complete stream before relying on it
- Run a test stream with motion and audio similar to the real program. A static test image may not expose the same encoding load as fast movement or a more complex scene.
- Watch encoder statistics and YouTube stream health throughout the test, especially during the conditions that previously caused stuttering.
- If you record locally, inspect that recording as well as the delivered stream to separate encoding problems from delivery problems.
- Measure available outbound upload capacity under realistic conditions. YouTube’s general streaming tips recommend leaving 20% headroom above bitrate demand; account for both primary and backup stream rates where both are being sent.
- Change only one setting between tests and keep the configuration that delivers smooth output with acceptable quality and sufficient upload headroom.
Common causes and what to try
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder preview or local recording stutters; encoding-lag statistics rise. | Encoding or rendering workload, or insufficient sustained CPU. | Reduce resolution or frame rate, test a faster software preset, simplify processing, and check other VPS workloads. |
| Local output is smooth, but YouTube reports dropped frames or connection trouble. | VPS outbound connection stability or insufficient bitrate capacity. | Inspect YouTube stream health, test outbound capacity, and consider a bitrate your connection can sustain with headroom. |
| Stutter appears only during complex or fast-moving scenes. | Workload that changes with scene complexity or motion. | Reproduce that content in a test; reduce encoding workload and compare under the same conditions. |
| Lower bitrate did not resolve encoding lag. | The underlying issue may be CPU-bound encoding rather than delivery bandwidth. | Check encoding-lag statistics and test resolution, frame rate, preset, and processing changes instead. |
| Encoding lag persists after workload reductions. | The VPS may not provide enough sustained CPU for the required output. | Measure sustained capacity and compare a larger allocation or a compatible separate hardware encoder. |
