Yes—an M2 Mac mini can run OBS and send a YouTube live stream using Apple Silicon’s hardware-accelerated H.264 encoding. To set up a 24/7 channel, enable YouTube Live, create an event and stream key, configure OBS with a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, then test the real scene and monitor stream health. That establishes compatibility, not guaranteed unattended uptime: power, internet, OBS, and the workload can still interrupt a local stream.
Before setup: confirm YouTube Live is ready
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Install OBS from the official macOS distribution: download the .dmg and move OBS into Applications, following the OBS Mac installation instructions. OBS compatibility changes over time; check its macOS versions page for the current supported macOS and OBS combinations before installing.
Set up a YouTube event and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a live event. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the event workflow.
- Select a stream key for the event. YouTube supports reusable custom keys and provides auto-start and auto-stop settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the associated event.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. If configuring a custom server, use the server URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS when YouTube provides it.
- Open Settings → Output and choose a streaming encoder. Apple Silicon hardware H.264 encoding is documented by OBS; for a straightforward SDR broadcast, H.264 over RTMPS is a practical starting point. Do not assume every OBS build or encoder exposes every codec YouTube accepts. See OBS hardware encoding.
- Set up the OBS scene you actually intend to leave running, including media sources and audio. Test the full scene rather than a simplified placeholder; OBS cautions that meeting system requirements alone does not guarantee streaming capability.
Choose resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encoder settings
Use YouTube’s current codec-specific table rather than treating one bitrate as universal. For H.264, YouTube’s recommended bitrates include the following values; they apply to these particular resolution and frame-rate combinations, not automatically to other codecs or modes.

Lower resolution or frame rate reduces bandwidth demand. Choose the quality that your upload can sustain reliably, and leave capacity for network variation rather than planning to use all measured upload bandwidth. YouTube does not specify a universal headroom amount. Run an upload speed test and consult the YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table for the exact codec and mode you select.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: 2-second interval recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Video: progressive, square pixels, SDR for a standard setup.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 are listed by YouTube. For stereo AAC, YouTube recommends 128 Kbps.
- Frame rate: YouTube lists up to 60 fps; select a rate your scene and connection can sustain.
These are YouTube’s general encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Mac, scene, or connection will remain stable. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 ingestion, but OBS’s documented Apple Silicon streaming support is H.264; confirm the actual encoder options available in your OBS setup.

Test the stream before relying on it
- Use representative content, motion, and audio. A static test image will not reveal every issue in a channel with changing video.
- Start the OBS stream and check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room before making the event public.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators while the test runs, and verify both picture and sound at the destination.
- If your audience commonly watches on phones, check playback on a mobile device as well.
- Repeat testing at the intended resolution and frame rate. YouTube explicitly recommends testing before going live.
For a continuous, mostly non-interactive channel, the lowest latency may not be worth additional buffering risk. YouTube notes that lower latency may mean more playback buffering; choose latency settings based on whether immediate audience interaction matters to the programming.
Can an M2 Mac mini run OBS all day?
The M2 Mac mini is a plausible OBS host, not a promise of uninterrupted operation. Apple lists hardware-accelerated H.264 and HEVC media engines for the 2023 M2 Mac mini, and OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox H.264 streaming on Apple Silicon. The base M2 model has an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 100 GB/s memory bandwidth, and Gigabit Ethernet, according to Apple’s Mac mini (2023) technical specifications.

Whether a specific setup sustains its chosen output depends on the scene complexity, sources, resolution, environment, and network. Test your real configuration for an extended period and inspect OBS and YouTube health indicators; basic hardware compatibility alone is not evidence of workload-specific performance.
What happens if the internet, power, or OBS drops?
A local OBS stream depends on the Mac, OBS, power, and an internet connection remaining available. The setup described here does not establish a guaranteed unattended restart or recovery procedure after an outage or application failure. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options affect event behavior, but do not by themselves prove OBS will relaunch or reconnect in every failure scenario.

Plan how you will notice an interruption and restore the stream, and test the recovery steps you intend to rely on. Also verify YouTube’s current continuous-event duration and archive behavior before designing a schedule around a single uninterrupted broadcast; those limits are not established here.
