First find where the drift begins: check the original video, your OBS preview or local recording, and then the YouTube playback. If audio and video start together but separate gradually, a fixed audio-delay setting is unlikely to solve the underlying problem. Diagnose the source before changing sync settings.
Find where the drift starts
Compare the same moment in three places: the original file, OBS preview or a local OBS recording, and the YouTube stream. Use a scene with clear movement and a sound that is easy to line up, such as a visible impact or spoken word. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to what the stream will contain.
- Check the source file. Play the recording from beginning to end, especially the portion where the live stream usually becomes noticeably out of sync. If the file itself drifts, the problem is upstream of OBS; changing an OBS sync offset will not repair the media.
- Check OBS locally. Preview the source and, if possible, make a local recording while OBS is running. Compare its beginning and later sections with the original. If the source is in sync but OBS output drifts, investigate the source or encoder path before blaming YouTube.
- Check YouTube playback. Compare the same moments in the live stream. If the local output stays in sync but YouTube playback does not, inspect the connection and YouTube Live Control Room health messages.
- Record whether the error is fixed or growing. A constant offset is present from the start and stays about the same. Drift accumulates: alignment worsens as runtime increases. These are different symptoms and call for different diagnosis.
This comparison is a practical way to isolate the fault; YouTube does not prescribe this exact three-way test.
Check OBS connection health before changing sync
Watch OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator while the stream runs. OBS says an increasing “Dropped frames” count with a yellow or red connection square means the connection to the server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Address that instability before experimenting with an audio offset: a network or bitrate problem is not evidence that audio needs delaying.

OBS is free and open source; you do not need to buy OBS to troubleshoot this. Its official Help Portal has connection guidance at OBS Help Portal, and its stream buffering troubleshooting guide covers buffering-related checks.
Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect the Health Indicator and its error messages while streaming. YouTube describes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate. Check the specific warning rather than assuming it indicates sync drift: messages can concern audio or video format, sample rate, channel count, frame rate, keyframes, or bitrate.

Use YouTube’s Live streaming error messages and the Google for Developers LiveStream health status messages reference to interpret reported problems. Correct the setting named by the warning, then test again; a health warning does not by itself establish the cause of gradual desynchronization.
Verify encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance
Compare your encoder configuration with YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance. For keyframes, YouTube recommends a frequency of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Treat this as an ingest recommendation, not a guaranteed cure for clock drift.

Test with representative audio and movement, and monitor stream health during the test. To distinguish a short-lived setup issue from a long-running one, continue testing for at least as long as it normally takes your loop to drift; that duration is a troubleshooting choice, not a YouTube requirement.
If you use primary and backup streams
For YouTube failover, the primary and backup feeds need matching settings. YouTube’s health guidance identifies sample rate, channel count, codecs, frame rate, resolution, bitrate, and keyframe frequency among the settings to align. A mismatch may interfere with failover; matching these settings does not, by itself, prove or guarantee that gradual sync drift is fixed.

Why a fixed audio offset may not help
A fixed delay shifts audio by a constant amount. It may be relevant when the audio is consistently early or late by roughly the same amount, but it does not correct an offset that keeps growing over time. The official OBS and YouTube sources cited here do not establish a universal OBS timestamp, audio-clock correction, or delay control that reliably fixes gradual drift in a prerecorded loop.
Before choosing a setting, establish which output drifts, whether the source file also drifts, whether the offset is constant or cumulative, whether OBS reports dropped frames or connection instability, and which YouTube health message appears. Without those details, recommending a particular sync control or hardware purchase would be guesswork.

Common symptoms and next checks
- The source file is already out of sync. The issue is in the media or an earlier production stage. Test another known-good file; do not expect an encoder delay to repair a source that progressively drifts.
- The source is in sync, but an OBS local recording drifts. The fault appears before YouTube playback. Review the OBS source and encoding path, then retest locally before changing the live-stream configuration.
- Only YouTube playback drifts, and OBS shows increasing dropped frames. Investigate connection stability and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate. An audio offset does not address the reported connection condition.
- YouTube reports an audio, video, or keyframe error. Check the named format or encoder setting against YouTube’s guidance, then test and monitor the health indicator again.
- The problem appears only after a long runtime. Repeat a representative test for the duration that normally reveals it and compare the beginning and later portions. A brief successful test does not establish that a long-running loop remains synchronized.
