There is no single game identified by “the Wild West RPG,” so the way to handle bandits depends on the title and edition you are playing. If you mean Drifter: Wild West RPG, its rules allow a flee attempt at the end of a combat round unless the event says otherwise; that is an escape option, not a way to prevent an attack from starting.
First, identify the game and edition
“Wild West RPG” is not specific enough to identify one ruleset. Search results include Drifter: Wild West RPG, Boot Hill and other western role-playing games, and their bandit and combat rules should not be treated as interchangeable. Check the game’s title and edition before relying on any step-by-step advice.

If you mean Drifter: Wild West RPG
The located Drifter rules describe what you can do once combat is underway. They do not establish a general tactic that stops bandits from initiating an attack.
Attempt to flee at the end of a round
- Resolve the round: everyone attacks.
- At the end of the round, attempt to flee unless the event says you cannot.
- Use the rules’ D6 outcome table. A successful result moves you to an adjacent hex. A failed result leaves combat ongoing and causes a light wound.
Because the event can prohibit fleeing, check its instructions rather than assuming the general combat rule always applies.

- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the iconic horror story that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
Know how attacks are resolved
The located rules use a D10 for combat attacks, adjusted by the difference between the attacker’s and opponent’s current Finesse. If you have partners, they attack after you. Against several opponents, you choose whom to attack; opponents attack in the order listed in the event. These details can help you follow a fight, but they do not guarantee that bandits will not attack or that you can escape safely.

Do not apply the Drifter flee procedure to Boot Hill or another game without checking that game’s rules. To find the right answer, identify the title and edition, then look for whether combat allows fleeing, when an attempt is permitted, what happens on failure, whether escape changes your location, and whether a scenario can override the general rule.
