FFmpeg does not enumerate a YouTube playlist just because you pass it a playlist URL. It processes the inputs supplied with -i. For a playlist, let a playlist-aware tool such as yt-dlp select and download the entries, then use FFmpeg to merge or process them—or provide FFmpeg with a separate, correctly ordered input for each video.
First identify which program is selecting the videos
Check the exact command: does it run ffmpeg, yt-dlp, or both? This distinction matters. FFmpeg’s -i option takes an input; a YouTube playlist URL is not, by itself, an instruction for FFmpeg to enumerate every video in that playlist. yt-dlp documents playlist handling and item selection, making it the practical choice when the source is a YouTube playlist URL. FFmpeg command-line documentation · yt-dlp usage and options
If you already have a pipeline that supplies individual video files or URLs, FFmpeg can process multiple inputs. In that case, check that the pipeline really supplies a distinct input for each intended entry and that the inputs are in the intended order.
Choose the right URL and playlist behavior
To download the whole playlist
Use the playlist URL and check that your yt-dlp command does not restrict selection to one item. The --playlist-items option deliberately selects playlist positions; a narrow range is useful for diagnosis, but leaving an unintended restriction in the final command can make the run appear incomplete.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
To download only one video from a watch URL
A YouTube watch URL can identify a video and also carry playlist context. If you want only that video, yt-dlp documents --no-playlist for this case. It is the opposite of the fix for downloading the full playlist: do not use it when you want yt-dlp to enumerate the playlist.
For exact option behavior, consult the yt-dlp usage and options documentation.

Diagnose repeated first-item selection with a small run
- Record the command and versions. Run
yt-dlp --versionif yt-dlp is involved. Extractor behavior and options can change, so include the installed version when comparing results or reporting a problem. - Inspect the URL. Decide whether it is a playlist URL or a watch URL with playlist context. Use
--no-playlistonly when you intend to retrieve the single video, not the list. - Test a few positions. Run yt-dlp with an explicit selection such as
--playlist-items 1-3, then check the resulting titles or video IDs. The selected entries should be distinct. The option selects positions; this test helps establish whether yt-dlp is returning different entries before FFmpeg processing begins. - Check every FFmpeg input. If FFmpeg is being called directly, inspect each
-iargument and its position. Make sure each intended video is represented by a distinct input or by the list mechanism your pipeline is designed to use. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, and input/output options are reset between files; ordering can therefore affect how a command is interpreted. See the FFmpeg documentation. - Keep the playlist index in filenames. yt-dlp documents output templates such as
%(playlist)s/%(playlist_index)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s. Including the index makes it easier to spot repeated names, skipped positions, or unexpected ordering. See yt-dlp output template documentation. - Separate a rerun issue from a same-run issue. If the same videos are downloaded again on a later run, use a stable
--download-archivefile. yt-dlp records successful download identifiers there and skips those videos on subsequent runs. An archive does not fix a command that selects the same first item repeatedly during one run. Details are in the yt-dlp FAQ.
Choose between yt-dlp enumeration and explicit FFmpeg inputs
| Workflow | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| yt-dlp handles the playlist | A YouTube playlist URL where you need multiple entries; FFmpeg can then merge separate audio/video formats or process the downloaded files. | Playlist URL, item-selection options, distinct IDs or titles, and output indices. yt-dlp documents playlist selection and templates in its options and output template documentation. |
| Explicit FFmpeg inputs | An existing pipeline already provides individual media URLs or files and controls the list. | Each intended entry appears as a distinct input, inputs are ordered correctly, and options are positioned for the intended input or output. See FFmpeg command-line documentation. |
Neither workflow can be confirmed as the fix for every specific symptom without the actual command and URL. A generic loop option does not correct a URL or selection setting that repeatedly points to the same item.
Common causes and fixes
- A playlist-context watch URL is treated as a single video: if you want the playlist, use the playlist URL and remove unintended item restrictions; if you want just that video, use yt-dlp’s
--no-playlist. - An item range selects only one position: inspect
--playlist-items. Use a short range such as1-3to test distinct entries, then set the selection appropriate to the full run. - FFmpeg receives one input repeatedly: inspect the script or command that builds the inputs. Playlist enumeration must happen elsewhere, or each distinct video must be supplied explicitly.
- It is a repeat across separate runs, not inside one run: use a stable yt-dlp download archive to skip successfully downloaded videos on later runs; do not expect it to change within-run item selection.
- The output obscures which entry was processed: include playlist name, index, and title in yt-dlp’s output template so the resulting files reveal order and duplication.
What to include if the problem persists
For a reproducible diagnosis, share the exact command, a representative URL with private tokens removed, yt-dlp and FFmpeg versions, operating system, and relevant verbose output. yt-dlp’s bug-report guidance emphasizes current-version and reproducible-command details. Without those details, the symptom alone does not establish the cause.
