How to Stream a Video Folder to YouTube Live with Streamlabs Desktop

Stream a local video through Streamlabs Desktop to YouTube Live with the right encoder setup and settings—and learn why automatic folder sequencing needs testing.

You can send locally stored video through Streamlabs Desktop to YouTube Live by adding media as a source, connecting the YouTube encoder stream, and matching the output settings to your upload capacity. However, the available instructions confirm how to use individual media files; they do not confirm that Streamlabs Desktop can automatically play every file in a folder as a sequential playlist. If folder automation is essential, check the media-source controls in your installed version before relying on it.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; its general live-streaming guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for current requirements.
  • Streamlabs Desktop installed, a video file on your computer, and an internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream.
  • Permission to broadcast the video and its audio. Use material you own or are licensed to stream; having a file on your computer does not grant rebroadcast rights.

Menu labels and service flows can change. Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide, dated May 20, 2026, describes the general scene, source, and platform setup. YouTube’s official encoder guide covers stream creation and connecting an encoder.

Can Streamlabs play videos from a folder?

Streamlabs documents adding sources to a scene, and its media-file article describes regular media files such as MP4 as sources and discusses looping media. That supports using a local media file in a stream, but it does not establish that the current app can import a folder and automatically advance through every file in it. The media-file article was published June 5, 2019 and updated January 28, 2022, so verify the controls in your installed version rather than assuming its labels or behavior are unchanged: Streamlabs’ media-file article.

If you need continuous folder playback, test the exact sequence before scheduling a public event. Confirm whether your installed version offers a playlist or media source that advances through multiple files, and check what happens at the end of the list. Do not assume that adding one media file will automatically move to the next file in its folder.

Set up the YouTube stream and connect Streamlabs

  1. Create or choose the event in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, create a stream or select the scheduled event, and use its encoder setup details. Scheduling gives you an event to promote and a preview/Go live sequence; YouTube also describes starting an unscheduled stream via the encoder. Follow the flow shown for the event you chose.
  2. Protect the stream key. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not display it in the scene, share it publicly, or include it in a recording. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
  3. Connect Streamlabs Desktop. In Streamlabs, open Settings > Stream and connect YouTube where that option is available. If the current setup requires manual encoder details, enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the corresponding stream settings. Streamlabs’ quick-start guide covers platform connection, but the exact available flow may depend on the current app and service setup.
  4. Build a scene and add the media source. Create or select a scene, then use the Sources panel to add the local video file as a media source. Check the source’s playback and loop controls in your installed version. Confirm that the file’s picture and sound appear in the preview before sending the stream.

Choose settings that your connection can sustain

In Streamlabs’ output or encoder settings, use a video resolution and frame rate that your upload can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 frames per second, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table for the current recommendations.

H.264 output example YouTube recommended video bitrate What to consider
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps Choose this only if your upload can carry the video and audio bitrate with headroom.
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps The higher frame rate needs more bandwidth; test it under conditions similar to the live event.

These are YouTube’s recommendations for H.264, not guarantees of quality on every connection. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping roughly 20% upload bandwidth spare beyond the total stream bitrate. Account for audio and other network use, and avoid setting bitrate based only on your advertised internet speed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Test, go live, and end the event

  1. Run a test stream. Use audio and motion similar to what you intend to broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview before the public event, and confirm that video, audio, and any transitions behave as expected.
  2. Start the event. For a scheduled encoder stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live. If you are using an unscheduled stream, follow the active controls shown for that stream in YouTube Studio.
  3. Monitor the broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream health and check audio and video quality while live. If health deteriorates, lower the output bitrate or resolution and frame rate to a sustainable setting.
  4. End both sides cleanly. End the event in YouTube Live Control Room and stop sending content from Streamlabs. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in Studio’s Live tab; do not assume that an event lasting 12 hours or longer will be archived automatically. See YouTube’s encoder guide.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed The stream is not connected, or the URL/key is incorrect or outdated. Confirm the selected event in Live Control Room and recheck the URL and key in Streamlabs. Keep the key private.
The video appears, but no sound is heard The media file may have no usable audio, or the source/audio routing may be misconfigured. Test the file locally, check the source and mixer levels in Streamlabs, and verify audio in the YouTube preview before going public.
The stream buffers or health warnings appear The selected bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or network use may be competing with the stream. Check YouTube’s health indicator, lower bitrate or output demands, and retain the recommended upload headroom.
A second file does not start after the first Folder-level automatic sequencing is not established by the available Streamlabs instructions. Inspect the media-source and playlist controls in your installed version, then test a complete sequence before the event. Do not rely on a folder being treated as a playlist unless the app confirms it.
The stream ends but no archive appears The event may not have ended as expected, or it may have lasted 12 hours or more. Check the Live tab in YouTube Studio and the event’s status; YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours.
