Make a mob persistent to stop it from naturally despawning. For most ordinary mobs, the simplest option is a name tag—but it is not a universal guarantee: rules differ between Java and Bedrock, and wandering traders have a special timer that naming does not stop.
How to keep a mob from despawning
- Check your edition and the mob. Java and Bedrock do not use identical despawn rules, and some mobs have special behavior.
- Use a name tag on a mob that supports ordinary persistence. In Bedrock, the official 1.16.0 release notes say mobs set to persist—including name-tagged, tamed, bred, or tempted mobs—will not naturally despawn. These are examples of persistence-producing interactions; which ones apply depends on the mob. Minecraft’s Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes describe the rule.
- If you are playing Bedrock and the mob still disappears, check simulation distance. A mob may be crossing the edge of the area where game mechanics are simulated. Increasing render distance alone is not the same as keeping an entity simulated.
- Rule out other causes. A mob may have died, be subject to a special timer, or be affected by a version-specific issue. Persistence prevents natural despawning; it does not make a mob invulnerable.
How Java and Bedrock despawning differ
Java Edition
For common eligible mobs, the cited mechanics reference describes random despawning when they are more than 32 blocks from the nearest player, and immediate despawning beyond 128 blocks. This is a general rule, not a rule for every entity: mob type and persistence state can change the outcome. See the Java and Bedrock despawn mechanics reference for details.
Bedrock Edition
Bedrock’s despawn distances depend on simulation distance. The official 1.16.0 release notes say that at simulation distance 4, almost all naturally spawning mobs despawn at 44 blocks or farther from the nearest player. At higher simulation distances, those notes describe despawning at the simulation-distance edge or at 128 blocks. Fish have a shorter 40-block limit. The notes also describe a 1-in-800 random despawn chance for mobs between 32 and 44 blocks that have not taken damage for 30 seconds. These figures come from the 2020 Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes; check the behavior in your current version and for your particular mob.
Microsoft distinguishes simulation distance, which governs game mechanics such as entity behavior, from render distance, which controls what is drawn. A higher render distance by itself does not keep mobs simulated or persistent. Microsoft also notes that mobs may despawn in ticking areas, so a ticking area is not a universal fix. Why a name tag may not save every mob
Wandering traders
Wandering traders are a notable exception. The cited community-maintained mob reference says they despawn after 48,000 loaded ticks (40 minutes), and that naming them or putting them in a boat or minecart does not stop this timer. See the wandering trader reference. This is a special timed behavior, not ordinary natural despawning.
Persistence is not protection from every disappearance
A persistent mob can still die or be affected by a special rule or a version-specific bug. If a name-tagged mob vanishes, first check whether it could have died or whether its mob type has a timer; then verify the edition and current version before assuming the normal despawn mechanic removed it.

Keeping one mob versus managing a farm
A name tag or another mob-specific persistence interaction addresses an individual mob. Simulation distance instead affects which nearby game mechanics are active in Bedrock; it does not turn every mob into a permanently persistent one. For a farm, consider whether the mob is within the relevant simulation area and whether the farm depends on entities remaining active. Do not rely on render distance or a ticking area as a guaranteed anti-despawn method.
