OBS’s Media Source plays one media file and can loop that file; VLC Video can play a playlist of local files, with separate controls for looping the playlist and shuffling its order. YouTube’s viewer-side loop control does not change playback settings inside OBS.
First identify the source playing in OBS
In the scene that feeds your stream, find the source responsible for the repeated picture and sound. The fix depends on whether it is a single-file Media Source, a VLC Video playlist, a third-party playlist plugin, or a browser or window showing a YouTube player.
If the source is Media Source
- Select the source: In the OBS scene, select the Media Source that plays the video and open its properties.
- Check the file: Confirm that the source points to the intended media file.
- Choose whether it should repeat: Turn off Loop if the file should play once and then stop. If Loop is on, OBS plays the file again after playback completes.
Media Source is for an individual file. Turning off its Loop setting will not make it advance through several files; use a playlist-capable source for that.
If you want several local files to play in sequence
- Use VLC Video: Add a VLC Video source to the scene and put the intended distinct files in its playlist.
- Check Loop Playlist: This setting restarts the source after the playlist runs out. Turn it off if the playlist should stop at the end. OBS documents this option as on by default.
- Check Shuffle Playlist: This randomizes the file order; it does not determine whether the playlist repeats. OBS documents it as off by default.
- Check visibility behavior: VLC Video has a setting that controls whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is not visible. Set it to match how you use the scene, especially if hiding or switching scenes appears to restart or interrupt playback.
- Confirm VLC is installed: VLC Video requires VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
Use Loop Playlist to repeat the whole sequence, not Shuffle Playlist. If only one file is present in the playlist, looping the playlist will naturally play that same file again.

If the video is coming from YouTube or a plugin
YouTube in a browser or captured window
If the OBS source is a browser or captured window showing a YouTube playlist, investigate the page or player’s own playback behavior. OBS’s Media Source and VLC Video settings apply to local media playback; YouTube’s loop control is for repeating content while watching YouTube, not for changing an OBS local playlist.
Third-party Media Playlist Source plugin
If you use the Media Playlist Source plugin and it repeats one file instead of advancing, check the plugin and OBS versions. The plugin’s version 0.1.3 notes, dated April 13, 2025, describe a fix for a playlist failing to continue when the next file path is the same, including a case where looping only one file. Those notes say the necessary upstream OBS change is included starting with OBS 31. This is a plugin-specific diagnostic, not a general explanation for repetition in Media Source or VLC Video; check current compatibility and maintainer information before changing versions.

Test before broadcasting
- Let the OBS preview run long enough to reach the next playlist item and, if enabled, the end of the playlist.
- Confirm that the files advance in the intended order and that the playlist either stops or restarts as intended.
- Test the complete output before broadcasting. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes before a stream.
Common symptoms and fixes
