How to Stop Raspberry Pi Thermal Throttling During an FFmpeg YouTube Stream

Diagnose whether heat is throttling your Raspberry Pi during an FFmpeg YouTube stream, then reduce encoding load and improve cooling without guessing.

To stop thermal throttling during an FFmpeg YouTube stream, first confirm that the Pi is actually throttling while the stream runs. Then reduce encoding load, improve airflow, and add compatible cooling if throttling persists. A high temperature by itself does not prove that heat caused dropped frames: low supply voltage, decoding, storage, or network problems can also affect performance.

Confirm throttling during the stream

Raspberry Pi documents 85°C as the SoC thermal limit across its models. From 80°C to 85°C, Arm cores are progressively throttled; at 85°C, Arm and GPU frequencies are throttled. These controls protect the board, but reduce performance. Raspberry Pi also notes that a supply voltage below the specified threshold can trigger throttling, so check power as well as temperature. Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation

  1. Check temperature: while FFmpeg is running, run vcgencmd measure_temp. Raspberry Pi describes this GPU-reported reading as an accurate instantaneous temperature measurement. For another available reading, inspect /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp and divide the millidegree value by 1,000 to get Celsius. The documentation cautions that Linux-based readings can be inaccurate on some architectures.
  2. Check throttle flags: run vcgencmd get_throttled on a supported system. Interpret the flags using documentation for your board and software version; a temperature reading alone does not identify the cause of a performance problem.
  3. Observe a representative stream: note temperature, clock behavior, and throttle state while the actual FFmpeg job runs, then compare with idle. A short idle check will not reveal what happens under a sustained encode.
  4. Check power if clocks fall without a corresponding thermal rise: verify that the supply and cable are suitable for the board, and investigate undervoltage indications. A power problem can resemble a heat-related slowdown.

A stream can drop frames for reasons besides throttling. Consider capture or input decoding load, storage reads, upload stability, and the encoder’s ability to keep up alongside temperature and throttle state. No single command establishes why a particular frame was lost.

Reduce FFmpeg’s encoding load

The right encoding route depends on the Pi generation and the FFmpeg build. Raspberry Pi’s H.264 performance paper uses libx264 for its Raspberry Pi 5 software-encoding examples and h264_v4l2m2m for its Raspberry Pi 4 hardware-encoder comparison. Do not assume that Pi 5 has the same H.264 hardware route described for Pi 4, or that either encoder is available in every build. Raspberry Pi H.264 performance paper

Check what your build supports

Inspect the encoders available in your installed FFmpeg before changing the command. For example, ffmpeg -encoders lists encoders compiled into that build; check its output for the encoder you plan to use. Hardware support also depends on the board and software pipeline, including accepted pixel formats. Test the actual source and a representative stream rather than assuming an encoder name guarantees a working or lower-load path.

Lower load in measured steps

  1. Start with the source’s actual resolution and frame rate. If the Pi cannot sustain the encode, lower resolution or frame rate one step at a time and test again.
  2. If using libx264, test a less computationally demanding preset. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 low-latency software example uses the ultrafast preset and zerolatency tune. These are example settings, not a universal command: faster presets can trade compression efficiency or quality for lower encoding work, and the source, build, and stream needs matter.
  3. Only disable quality-related processing when you understand and accept the resulting trade-off. If the board and software pipeline support a hardware-encoder path for your setup, test it and compare sustained performance and output quality.
  4. Change one variable at a time, then check temperature, throttle state, dropped frames, and stream health during a sustained test.

There is no single safe FFmpeg command for an unspecified Pi model, input, and build. A command that works for one generation or pixel format may fail or overload another.

Keep YouTube ingest settings within guidance

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not evidence that a particular Raspberry Pi can encode at those settings. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate the specific board can sustain while leaving headroom in the available upload connection; test and monitor stream health before relying on the setup. YouTube Help: live encoder settings

Reducing resolution or frame rate can lower encoding load, but keep the chosen output compatible with YouTube’s current ingest guidance. Do not compensate for an overloaded encoder by setting a bitrate beyond the upload connection’s reliable capacity.

Improve airflow, then add compatible cooling

First remove avoidable airflow restrictions: give the board room to breathe, improve case ventilation, and place it where air can move across the board. A heatsink is more effective when air can flow over it. Raspberry Pi says a heatsink or small fan can reduce thermal throttling and improve performance. Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation

Extra cooling is most relevant when the actual sustained workload throttles, particularly in a hot environment, an airtight enclosure, or under a persistent compute-intensive task such as video processing. Raspberry Pi’s cooling white paper says: “If you find that your Raspberry Pi is throttling during your usual workload, then you may need to add extra cooling.” Raspberry Pi cooling white paper

Option When it fits Trade-offs to consider
Passive heatsink Confirmed sustained heat-related throttling where added airflow and a heatsink can dissipate heat. Effectiveness depends on airflow and the enclosure; it adds no active airflow by itself.
Active fan Persistent throttling when ventilation or a passive heatsink is not enough. Check noise, power, board fit, and case clearance.

Choose cooling for the exact board and case, not just a product labelled for a different Raspberry Pi generation. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 article discusses active cooling for heavy sustained workloads and reports passive cooling becoming insufficient in its own long stress-test context; that is not a universal time-to-throttle prediction for streaming. Its Pi 4 Case Fan article likewise addresses Pi 4 and sustained full-speed conditions. Raspberry Pi 5 article · Raspberry Pi 4 Case Fan article

Avoid unsafe shortcuts

  • Do not raise the thermal limit to suppress throttling. The limit is protective; removing or changing that protection does not solve the underlying heat or performance constraint.
  • Do not overclock as a fix for a stream that is already throttling. Raspberry Pi warns that nonstandard overclock settings can have consequences.
  • Do not buy a fan or heatsink until you have checked the board model, enclosure fit, and whether sustained thermal throttling is occurring.

Troubleshoot common symptoms

Symptom What to check Next step
High temperature, but no throttle indication during the stream Check throttle flags and clock behavior while the workload is active; confirm readings and board-specific interpretation. Look for other bottlenecks, including decoding, storage, and upload stability, before treating heat as the cause.
Clock or performance drops with little temperature change Check for undervoltage or an unsuitable supply and cable. Resolve the power issue, then repeat the representative stream test.
Throttling returns during a sustained encode Compare the active stream’s temperature and throttle state with idle. Lower resolution, frame rate, or encoding complexity; improve ventilation and add compatible cooling if needed.
FFmpeg rejects the encoder or fails on input format Check ffmpeg -encoders, the installed build, board generation, and supported pixel formats. Use an encoder and input path actually supported by that board/build; test before going live.
YouTube stream health is poor despite no thermal throttle Check ingest settings, upload headroom, and the source/decoder path. Test with YouTube’s current encoder guidance and monitor stream health; do not assume a cooling change will fix a non-thermal issue.

Or let it run in the cloud
