To send a playlist from a media server to YouTube Live, use the server or an encoder connected to it to play the source videos, then send that continuous output to a YouTube live event using the event’s stream URL and stream key. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the event, enter those credentials in the output’s YouTube/RTMP settings, start transmission, and confirm that YouTube shows a preview and healthy ingest before going live.

The exact steps for loading or looping a playlist depend on the media server and its version. YouTube documents how to receive the stream, not how each server selects or plays source videos. The guide below covers the YouTube side and the handoff; use the server vendor’s documentation for its playlist controls.

How the media-server-to-YouTube connection works

There are two separate playlists to keep straight. Your media server’s playlist selects the recordings to play. The outgoing connection then delivers the server’s continuous video and audio feed to YouTube. For ordinary encoder ingest, that connection is commonly RTMPS; HLS is another option when the encoder and workflow support it.

YouTube’s setup requires the stream URL and stream key for the specific event. Those credentials identify where the encoder sends data. They do not tell YouTube which videos to play, and they do not replace the playlist settings in your media server.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up the YouTube live event

  1. Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Go Live. Create a stream, or schedule one in the Manage tab. Scheduling can provide a shareable watch page and reminders.
  2. Set the event details and privacy. Choose the title, audience settings, and visibility appropriate for your channel. Check the selected privacy setting rather than assuming every stream starts as public; YouTube’s documented defaults vary by age.
  3. Open the event’s Live Control Room settings. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the values for this event, not credentials copied from an unrelated stream.
  4. Keep the stream key private. Treat it as a credential: do not put it in screenshots, public logs, or examples. Anyone with access to it may be able to send content to the associated broadcast.

Configure the media server or encoder

  1. Load the source playlist in your media server. Select the recordings and playback order, and configure looping if you need the sequence to repeat. The exact menu path and loop behavior are vendor- and version-specific; YouTube’s instructions do not establish them for an unspecified server.
  2. Choose the outgoing method. If the server has a YouTube or RTMP output, enter the event’s server URL and key there. If it does not, use an encoder that can read the media server’s playback output and transmit it to YouTube.
  3. Select an ingest protocol supported by that exact output. For RTMPS, use the correct YouTube endpoint and an RTMPS connection. Google documents port 443 and requires TLS to send the correct endpoint hostname through SNI. Do not substitute a plain RTMP connection where the selected endpoint expects RTMPS.
  4. Save the output settings, then start transmission. Keep the media server’s playback running and confirm the encoder is sending the intended audio and video. Avoid exposing the stream key while diagnosing the connection.

Choose RTMPS or HLS

Use the protocol your server or encoder actually supports. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes RTMPS as a good choice for most ordinary user content, especially when low latency matters. HLS can fit workflows that require HLS ingest, but it sends segmented media and YouTube says it has higher latency than RTMP.

Consideration RTMPS HLS
Transport RTMP secured with SSL/TLS. Google documents port 443 and the correct hostname through SNI. HTTPS upload of segments and playlists using POST/PUT.
Playlist handling Send a continuous encoder feed; HLS segment-playlist requirements do not apply. Use a rolling HLS media playlist and supported segment format. This ingest playlist is not the source-video playlist in your media server.
Documented segment requirements Not applicable. YouTube’s HLS guidance calls for TS segments 1–4 seconds long and no more than five outstanding segments.
Latency Google identifies RTMPS as a suitable choice for ordinary content, particularly low-latency use. YouTube describes HLS latency as higher than RTMP because video is sent in segments.
When to consider it The server or encoder supports RTMPS and you want ordinary encoder ingest. The encoder and media workflow require HLS and can meet YouTube’s ingest requirements.

YouTube’s HLS developer documentation specifies muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOPs, up to 60 fps, and Media Playlists rather than Master Playlists. Confirm that your encoder implements these requirements before choosing HLS; they are separate from the playlist of videos you select on the media server.

Verify the stream before making it public

  1. Wait for YouTube’s incoming preview. After transmission starts, check that the expected video and audio arrive in Live Control Room.
  2. Review stream health. Resolve warnings before going live. YouTube’s status information can identify low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio.
  3. Start the public broadcast when ready. In a scheduled-stream workflow that requires it, click Go live only after the preview and ingest look right.
  4. Watch the source playlist as it plays. Confirm that the next recording starts as expected and that any configured loop behaves correctly. YouTube’s preview verifies the incoming feed; it cannot verify the media server’s playlist rules for you.

End the stream and check the archive

When the broadcast is finished, use End Stream for a scheduled stream and stop sending content from the server or encoder. YouTube states that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That rule should not be assumed to cover streams lasting 12 hours or longer.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
YouTube shows no incoming preview Confirm the event’s server URL and key, the selected protocol, and that the encoder has started sending. Make sure the credentials belong to the event open in Live Control Room.
RTMPS connection or SSL error Verify the RTMPS endpoint hostname and port 443. Confirm TLS is enabled and SNI uses the endpoint hostname; a plain RTMP connection or incorrect hostname can prevent connection.
HLS is rejected or unstable Check that the encoder uses HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling media playlist, and no more than five outstanding segments. Confirm it uses a supported HLS format.
Video health warning Inspect the output bitrate and frame rate, and confirm an audio feed is present. YouTube’s health fields can flag low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, or missing audio.
YouTube receives a stream, but the wrong videos play Check the source playlist, playback order, and loop controls in the media server. Those controls are specific to its product and version, not the YouTube ingest settings.
The server has no suitable YouTube output Check whether a separate encoder can receive the media server’s playback output and send it to YouTube. The exact connection and configuration depend on the server and encoder; no universal menu path applies.

Check rights and channel suitability

Before streaming a playlist, make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast every recording and its audio. A video being available on your server does not by itself establish permission to stream it on YouTube. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization requirements for your channel and content; avoid assuming that repeating prerecorded material qualifies for monetization simply because the stream remains live.
