First check that the videos can legally and technically be downloaded: public availability on YouTube does not automatically mean you may save a permanent local copy.
What an external hard drive can—and cannot—store
An external drive can hold ordinary video files exported from your own channel or content you are authorized to keep. It is not a way to turn every video on YouTube into a portable archive. YouTube’s UK Terms of Service restrict downloading and other use except where the service permits it, YouTube and applicable rights holders authorize it, or applicable law allows it; local rules may differ. YouTube Premium offline downloads serve a different purpose: watching within YouTube while signed in, not keeping a folder of portable video files on a hard drive. YouTube says offline availability can require reconnecting and syncing, and a video that is no longer available may be removed on the next sync. See YouTube Help on offline videos.
Export videos you are entitled to keep
Download your own uploads through YouTube Studio
- Sign in to the YouTube account that owns the channel and open YouTube Studio.
- Choose Content from the left menu.
- Find the video, open its options menu, and choose the download option if it is available.
- Save the downloaded file to your computer, then copy it to the external drive after checking that the transfer completed.
YouTube Help says its creator download tool supplies MP4 files at 720p or 360p, depending on video size. A download may be unavailable for removed videos, videos with certain strikes, or videos using preapproved audio. YouTube also lists a limit of five downloads per video in a 24-hour period. Export all your uploads with Google Takeout
For a channel archive, Google Takeout can export all videos uploaded to your account. Select YouTube and YouTube Music in Takeout, configure the export, then download the resulting archive and extract its video files before copying them to the external drive. Follow the current prompts in Google Takeout Help; export packaging and available options can change.
Choose the drive size from the actual files
- Gather the files you intend to preserve, then total their sizes using your computer’s file manager or storage properties.
- Allow additional space for future uploads, temporary export archives, and the operating system’s usable-capacity conventions.
- Choose a drive with more rated capacity than the current total plus your expected growth. Do not assume the advertised capacity will appear as exactly the same usable amount on every computer; Western Digital notes actual user capacity may be lower.
- Before buying a particular model, confirm its connection type, supported operating systems, and file-system compatibility with the computer that will manage the archive.
There is no one capacity that fits every library. As one manufacturer example—not an independent recommendation—Western Digital’s 2025 G-DRIVE datasheet lists 18TB, 22TB, 24TB, and 26TB configurations in its specification table; its product overview highlights 22TB and 24TB. WD states up to 280MB/s read and write for the 22TB and 24TB configurations, based on internal testing and subject to host and usage conditions. Specifications may change. Organize the archive so files remain findable
A simple structure is easier to maintain than a pile of exports. For example, create folders by channel or subject, then year. Preserve each video’s title and date or identifier in its filename where practical. Keep an index or spreadsheet with the title, original YouTube URL, date, channel, local file path, and any relevant rights or permission notes. These fields are a practical filing method, not a required YouTube standard.
Make a second copy and check it periodically
A single external drive is one copy, not a backup. Keep another copy on a separate drive or independent storage so one drive failure, loss, or damage does not erase the whole collection. RAID can improve fault tolerance, but it is not a substitute for a separate backup. The Library of Congress guide on personal digital archiving also recommends cataloging files and planning for storage-media refresh; it suggests anticipating replacement at approximately 3–5 years. Treat that as the guide’s planning advice, not a guaranteed lifespan for every drive. See Personal Digital Archiving: The Basics.

- After copying, open a sample of files from the external drive to make sure they play.
- Periodically compare the archive and its second copy; replace a damaged or incomplete copy rather than assuming the drive is fine because it mounts.
- Keep the second copy physically separate when practical, and refresh aging storage before relying on it indefinitely.
External drive or NAS?
