To stop your microphone from transmitting low-level sound during pauses in XSplit Broadcaster, enable Noise Gate and tune its threshold while watching the microphone’s VU meter. XSplit calls the feature Noise Gate, not silence detection: audio above the threshold passes, while audio below it is blocked.
Set up Noise Gate in XSplit Broadcaster
- Select your microphone: Open Tools > Settings > Audio and check that the intended capture device is selected. This is the Audio tab for choosing audio devices. XSplit’s audio-device guidance.
- Open Audio Effects: Choose Tools > Audio Effects. Alternatively, open Audio settings and click the gear icon beside the microphone dropdown to access Audio Effects properties. XSplit’s Audio Mixer and Effects guidance.
- Enable Noise Gate: Turn on the Noise Gate effect. Its threshold determines which microphone signal levels pass and which are blocked.
- Watch your microphone level: Open Tools > Audio Mixer to monitor devices individually. Keep the microphone level out of the red range; XSplit warns that levels in the red can cause clipping or crackling. XSplit’s Audio Mixer and Effects guidance.
- Test speech and pauses: Speak normally, then pause and watch the VU meter. If ordinary speech is blocked, lower the threshold. If quiet background sound still gets through, raise it cautiously, then test again.
XSplit does not publish a universal recommended threshold number. The right setting depends on the signal levels in your microphone setup, so tune it against your own speech and pauses rather than copying an arbitrary value.
Noise Gate, Noise Suppression, and Push to Talk
| Option | How it responds | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Noise Gate | Uses a manually set audio-level threshold: below it, the signal is blocked; above it, audio passes. | Reducing low-level microphone transmission during pauses. |
| Noise Suppression | Automatically detects and removes noise. | Reducing background noise without setting a gate threshold. |
| Push to Talk | Keeps the microphone muted until you press its assigned hotkey. | Choosing exactly when to transmit by key press rather than by sound level. |
Noise Suppression is not another name for Noise Gate: suppression is automatic noise treatment, while a gate blocks audio according to a manually selected threshold. Push to Talk is also different; it is controlled by a hotkey. Audio Mixer and Effects and XSplit’s Push to Talk guidance.
What to check if the result is wrong
- Your microphone stays quiet while you speak: Confirm the intended microphone is selected in Tools > Settings > Audio, then lower the Noise Gate threshold and test normal speech again.
- Background sound still passes during pauses: Raise the threshold in small steps while watching the VU meter. Check after each change that ordinary speech still passes.
- The microphone sounds clipped or crackles: Check its level in Tools > Audio Mixer and keep it below the red range.
- You want deliberate, key-controlled muting: Set up Push to Talk rather than using Noise Gate; XSplit says assigning a Push to Talk hotkey mutes the microphone until the key is pressed.
Or let it run in the cloud
Noise Gate is a microphone effect for a live audio setup. If instead you want an uploaded video to play as a continuous YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
