A YouTube storyboard is a sequence of rough drawings or written frame descriptions that shows what viewers will see before you record. Start with the video’s purpose and outline, divide it into visual beats, then note the shot, setting, audio, props, and equipment each beat needs. You do not need drawing skill or special software: ordinary paper works.
Turn your idea into a shootable plan
- Write the promise and structure. State what viewers should understand or be able to do. Organize the video into an opening, middle, and close, putting explanations and demonstrations in an order that makes sense. YouTube recommends thinking about the edit while writing, including the opening, ending, key moments, camera positions, and possible B-roll (YouTube editing tips).
- Divide the script into visual beats. Start a new panel when the subject, location, visual evidence, or camera setup changes. A talking-head explanation may need only a few panels; a tutorial or game-hardware demonstration may need more to show each important action. Plan meaningful changes, not a separate drawing for every sentence.
- Choose what the viewer needs to see. Describe or sketch the frame, identify its focal point, and decide on shot size, angle, background, and any camera movement. A wide shot can establish a room or gameplay setup; a medium shot can keep attention on a person; a close-up can make a small control or detail legible. These are options, not a formula.
- Add production notes. Record dialogue or voice-over, useful approximate duration, props, graphics or text, location, gear, people needed, and audio or lighting concerns. YouTube says a larger production’s shot list can specify angle, framing, and camera movement (YouTube filming tips).
- Make a shot list from the board. Turn each planned frame into an actionable shot. Group shots by location, subject, or setup where practical, even if the final edit will use them in another order. A shot list helps keep required footage visible during filming; it does not dictate the edit.
- Check the real location and equipment. Confirm access and permissions, likely light and sound, camera settings, and that the camera, lights, and microphone work. Charge devices and prepare backup batteries or storage. YouTube also advises respecting privacy and avoiding identifying personal details in footage at home (YouTube filming tips).
- Adapt when filming or editing reveals a better option. The board is a planning aid, not a commitment to a shot that no longer works. During editing, compare the footage with the intended opening, ending, key moments, and B-roll needs; revise the plan if the available location or setup changes.
What to put in each storyboard panel
Use a column for each item that matters to your shoot. This practical layout synthesizes the shot-list and storyboard examples in the Canadian Heritage and Canadian Conservation Institute web-video guide; it is not a mandatory standard.
| Panel field | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| Script line or beat | What is said or demonstrated here? |
| Sketch or visual description | What should the viewer see? |
| Subject and focal point | Where should attention go? |
| Shot size, framing, and angle | How much of the subject or setting is visible, and from where? |
| Camera movement | Is the camera fixed, panning, or zooming? |
| Location and background | Where does the shot happen, and what appears behind the subject? |
| Audio, text, props, or B-roll | What supporting material must be recorded or added? |
| Duration and setup notes | How much time, equipment, or help might this shot need? |
A solo creator can combine fields or use a short checklist. A production involving several people may need separate, more detailed notes so everyone understands the shot.
Choose paper or a digital storyboard
Paper: quickest to start
Use a plain document with script or dialogue on one side and sketches on the other, or draw a grid of panels on ordinary paper. Pencil makes revisions simple. The Canadian production guide describes this script-and-sketch approach; a paid notebook or template is not necessary.

iMovie on iPhone: a documented digital option
Apple documents premade storyboard templates in iMovie for iPhone. Each storyboard includes a flexible shot list to guide the clips to capture, along with matching titles, transitions, and music. You can start from iMovie’s project flow; see Apple’s iMovie storyboard instructions. This is one software option, not a requirement.
Pick by workflow, not by polish
- Choose paper if you want to begin immediately and revise by hand.
- Choose a digital board if rearranging panels, sharing them, or keeping them with project assets suits your workflow.
- Use the simplest format that lets the person filming understand the intended frame. The cited sources establish paper and iMovie workflows, not comparative performance tests of storyboard tools.
Common storyboard problems and fixes
- Every sentence has its own panel: Combine lines that use the same subject, location, and camera setup. Split when the visual changes meaningfully.
- The drawings look rough: Keep them rough. Label the subject, framing, and action so the shot is clear; artistic finish is not the goal.
- The plan describes dialogue but not pictures: Add what viewers should see—demonstration, close-up, gameplay capture, reaction, graphic, or other relevant visual.
- The shot list follows edit order and wastes setup time: Keep the storyboard in story order, then group the practical filming list by location or setup.
- A shot cannot be filmed as planned: Check access, light, sound, equipment, and available help before recording. Revise the panel to fit a workable setup rather than forcing the original idea.
Planning can help reveal missing visuals, locations, or equipment before the shoot, but the cited guidance does not quantify time saved or guarantee fewer takes.
