How do I stream music 24/7 on YouTube with OBS?
Use this sequence: clear the music rights, confirm your channel can livestream, create an encoder stream in YouTube Live Control Room, configure OBS with the stream key and appropriate output settings, and test the complete setup before leaving it unattended. OBS sends the stream from your computer; your computer, playback source and internet connection must keep working for the broadcast to continue.
1. Clear the music rights first
Use music you created or obtain written permission that explicitly covers the intended continuous YouTube livestream. Check the license for the relevant territories, monetization (if planned), and use in any recording or archive viewers may replay. Keep the license and track-level documentation available.
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to hold all necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. Read YouTube’s livestream terms.

- Do not assume that “royalty-free,” “free to use,” a credit line or a purchase automatically grants livestream rights. Check the specific catalog and track terms.
- Ask whether the rights holder can add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says licensed third-party content can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright-protected content in live streams.
- Confirm that any permission covers the exact use: continuous live broadcast, territories, monetization and any retained or archived version.
2. Make sure your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with livestreaming enabled and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned launch. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming access requirements.
3. Create the encoder stream in YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a stream using an encoder. Set the title, description, visibility and other event details you need.
- Copy the stream key and server URL shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
YouTube describes the stream key as the credential and address information an encoder uses to send video to YouTube. Use the values shown for your event rather than copying a key from an unrelated stream. The current encoder setup instructions are at YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
4. Configure OBS and check the YouTube preview
In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if it is available, then connect your account or enter the stream key as OBS prompts. If you use a custom server configuration, copy the server URL and key from Live Control Room. In Settings > Output, configure streaming output; under Settings > Video, choose the output resolution and frame rate you intend to send.

For a common H.264, 1080p30 SDR stream, YouTube’s recommended starting values are 10 Mbps video bitrate, CBR rate control, a two-second keyframe interval, AAC audio and 128 Kbps stereo audio. YouTube supports up to 60 fps and lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. These are YouTube’s published settings, not a guarantee that your computer or connection can sustain them. Match bitrate to the selected format, equipment and stable upload capacity. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.
- Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends it for typical encoder streams because it encrypts the connection.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube’s networking guidance says to leave about 20% of upload capacity available. Test sustained upload speed, not just a brief peak, and use a lower bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot maintain the chosen settings.
- Test representative content. Check the actual audio level, visual motion and output quality in a test stream before launch. A still image and a fast-moving visual can behave differently at the same encoding settings.
YouTube also lists OBS as an encoder that supports HLS output. HLS uses different ingestion requirements and has higher latency than RTMP; you do not need to choose HLS simply because OBS supports it. Use YouTube’s HLS-specific setup only when the codec or HDR workflow you want calls for HLS. The relevant format and setup details are in YouTube’s encoder settings and encoder setup instructions.
5. Start, verify and monitor the stream
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview before going live. Confirm that the audio is audible and not clipping, the intended image is present, and YouTube is receiving a stable signal.
- Start the event from Live Control Room when you are satisfied with the preview. Verify that the public watch page is accessible at the visibility level you selected.
- For a 24/7 run, monitor audio and video quality and plan for failures in connectivity, power, playback and rights status. If you use a backup encoder, test failover in advance; check any local recording files as well.
YouTube advises creators to set up the encoder in advance, check the Live Control Room preview, test backup-encoder failover where applicable, confirm watch-page access and continuously monitor audio and video quality. Those checks help you detect problems; they do not establish an uptime guarantee for OBS or a consumer internet connection. YouTube’s encoder guidance includes its live-stream checks.

What bitrate should I use for a YouTube music livestream?
Choose a bitrate for the resolution, frame rate and codec you actually send, then verify that your connection can sustain it with upload headroom. YouTube’s recommended video bitrate for H.264 at 1080p30 is 10 Mbps. Its other baseline recommendations for that example are CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and 128 Kbps stereo audio. The full set of YouTube recommendations varies by format; consult the current encoder settings table before choosing a different resolution, frame rate or codec.
Music streams still need a video feed, whether that is a still image, visualizer or other permitted artwork. Test the actual scene and audio in OBS and YouTube’s preview. If the stream drops frames or becomes unstable, reduce the output bitrate or resolution and retest rather than relying on a speed-test peak.

Can I play lo-fi beats on a YouTube livestream?
Yes, if you have the rights for that specific use. The fact that a track is lo-fi, Indian, available online or labeled royalty-free does not by itself establish permission for a continuous YouTube broadcast. Your license needs to cover livestreaming and the applicable territories; check monetization and replay/archive rights separately if those uses apply.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If its systems identify a match, YouTube may replace the stream’s picture with a placeholder, and unresolved third-party content can lead to interruption or termination. YouTube advises creators who have licensed third-party content to ask the owner to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist. A license and an allowlist address different issues: keep the license, and confirm the owner has allowlisted the channel where Content ID applies. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Yes. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance says a match to third-party content can affect a live broadcast, and it specifically recommends asking the content owner to add a licensed channel to the Content ID allowlist. A license does not necessarily prevent an automated match or interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted. Resolve permission and allowlisting with the rights holder before broadcasting; if a claim appears, follow the platform’s and rights holder’s process rather than assuming that adding a credit line will clear it.
Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise that a single 24-hour stream will be archived as a complete recording. If you need a replay, verify YouTube’s current behavior for your planned stream and keep an independent local recording strategy; confirm the recording is being created and that you have rights for the archived use. Common problems and fixes
- Livestreaming is unavailable: verify the channel, check for a restriction in the previous 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: check that OBS is using the server URL and stream key for the correct event. If you regenerate or change the key, update OBS to match.
- Connection is unstable or frames are dropped: check sustained upload capacity, preserve the recommended headroom, and lower the bitrate or resolution before testing again.
- A rights match interrupts the broadcast: verify the track’s live-use permission and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting. A credit or proof of purchase alone may not resolve the platform match.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: do not depend on automatic archiving for a 24-hour stream. Check the local recording and maintain a separate recording plan if a replay matters.
- The stream stops while unattended: investigate power, computer sleep settings, internet loss, OBS or playback failure, and any platform notice. The setup depends on the local computer and connection remaining operational.
