To keep a YouTube stream running on an Indian cloud VM, run your encoder as a systemd service with Restart=on-failure. Add WatchdogSec= only if the encoder or a wrapper sends systemd regular health notifications; the setting alone does not monitor an arbitrary process. RuntimeWatchdogSec= is a separate, device-dependent mechanism intended to reboot an unresponsive machine.
Choose the right kind of watchdog
“Watchdog” can mean two different things in systemd. For a stream encoder, service-level process recovery is usually the starting point. A VM-level hardware watchdog is not a substitute for it.
| Mechanism | What it supervises | What it needs | Typical response |
|---|---|---|---|
WatchdogSec= |
A single systemd service | The service or its wrapper must send periodic WATCHDOG=1 notifications. |
On a missed deadline, systemd marks the service failed and terminates it; what happens next depends on Restart=. |
RuntimeWatchdogSec= |
System responsiveness via a watchdog device | A compatible watchdog device must be exposed to the VM. | The device can reboot the machine if systemd stops servicing it. |
For WatchdogSec=, systemd activates supervision after service startup completes. It also provides the configured timeout to a notifying service as WATCHDOG_USEC=. The systemd notification guidance recommends sending keep-alive messages about halfway through that timeout. A wrapper that keeps pinging while its encoder child is dead or wedged defeats the purpose: the heartbeat should depend on useful process or stream health.
RuntimeWatchdogSec= has no effect if a hardware watchdog is unavailable. Do not assume an unspecified cloud VM exposes /dev/watchdog or /dev/watchdog0; check the guest and the provider’s documentation. A reboot-level watchdog addresses a different failure from restarting a single encoder.

Prepare the VM and YouTube stream
Check the operating environment
- Confirm the guest uses systemd and note the distribution’s systemd version. Directives and rate-limit behavior can vary by installed version, so check that distribution’s systemd manual.
- Confirm the cloud region, outbound bandwidth, and provider restart behavior. Test sustained upload from the VM’s actual region with headroom above the chosen video bitrate.
- Check whether a watchdog device is present and documented for this VM. Availability is provider- and instance-dependent.
Set up the YouTube ingest
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
- Copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of world-readable files, command logs, and public repositories. If it is compromised, reset it in Studio and update the encoder.
- Set auto-start and auto-stop in the stream settings if you want the encoder to control the broadcast lifecycle.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its guidance also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. The following H.264 video bitrate recommendations are ingest settings, not a guarantee of VM network capacity:
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
YouTube lists further bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate in its encoder settings guidance. Match the encoder to the output you actually intend to send, then verify stream health in the Live Control Room.

Create a restartable systemd service
The exact unit depends on the distribution, encoder command, file locations, and account used to run it. The example below shows the relevant service structure; replace the example paths and executable with your own, and verify the directives against your installed systemd version. It is not a tested, provider-specific configuration.
[Unit]
Description=YouTube live stream encoder
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
WorkingDirectory=/srv/stream
EnvironmentFile=/etc/stream/encoder.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -i /srv/stream/input.mp4 ...
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Replace the illustrative ExecStart with the complete command for your encoder and source. The ellipsis is not a valid encoder argument. For a long-lived live source, configure the encoder’s own input and reconnect behavior as appropriate; systemd cannot correct an invalid command or an unreachable input.

- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service, or use a different consistent unit name. - Put the stream key and other sensitive configuration in a protected file such as
/etc/stream/encoder.env; set ownership and permissions so only the service account and administrators who need it can read it. Use the encoder’s supported configuration method rather than exposing credentials in logs or a broadly readable unit. - Reload unit definitions and enable the service at boot:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, thensudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service. - Check startup and logs with
systemctl status youtube-stream.serviceandjournalctl -u youtube-stream.service.
Restart=on-failure restarts the service after an abnormal exit and is a sensible baseline for an encoder. Use Restart=always only if a clean exit should also relaunch the process. Set a modest RestartSec= delay so a failing command does not restart in a tight loop, and check systemd’s start-rate limiting if repeated failures leave the unit stopped.
Add service watchdog notifications only when supported
Adding WatchdogSec= to the example unit is not enough. The process systemd supervises must implement the systemd notification protocol, or a wrapper must do so on its behalf. If the encoder does not notify systemd, use restart-on-failure without WatchdogSec=, or introduce a notification-capable supervisor that can assess the encoder meaningfully.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
When a capable service or wrapper is in place, add a timeout such as WatchdogSec=30s only after choosing and implementing its health check. The service should send WATCHDOG=1 more frequently than the timeout—roughly every half-timeout is the systemd API guidance—and stop notifying if the encoder exits or the relevant health check fails. Choose the timeout to fit the service’s real behavior; the example value is illustrative, not a universal recommendation.
Systemd starts the watchdog after startup completes. If a notification deadline is missed, systemd terminates the service; the unit’s Restart= policy determines whether it is started again. Confirm the notification mechanism, restart policy, and rate limits on the target system before relying on it for an unattended broadcast.

Test recovery and plan for long broadcasts
- Start with a test broadcast. Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, and confirm the intended video and audio reach YouTube.
- In a controlled test, stop or kill the encoder and confirm systemd starts it again. Inspect
systemctl status youtube-stream.serviceandjournalctl -u youtube-stream.servicefor the failure and restart history. - Verify that recovery restores YouTube ingest and that viewers can see the stream again. A process restart does not itself prove the broadcast is healthy; monitor the encoder and YouTube’s stream-health view.
- Check the archive workflow separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a 24/7 broadcast exceeding that threshold will become one complete VOD. Decide how to handle broadcast rotation or archives based on the channel’s needs.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The service starts but there is no stream: Check the command, input path, server URL, stream key, and encoder logs. Confirm the key is current and the stream is selected in YouTube Studio.
- The process exits repeatedly: Read
journalctl -u youtube-stream.servicefor the first error, then correct the command, permissions, missing files, or unavailable input. A restart policy can relaunch a failed process but cannot fix its cause. WatchdogSec=does not restart an apparently hung encoder: Verify that the service or wrapper actually sends systemd notifications. Then check that its heartbeat reflects encoder health rather than continuing independently after the child process hangs.- The service repeatedly restarts and then stops: Inspect status and journal entries for systemd start-rate limiting. Fix the underlying failure and respect the installed systemd version’s rate-limit settings before restarting.
RuntimeWatchdogSec=appears ineffective: Check whether a compatible device is exposed in the VM and documented by the provider. Without one, the setting has no effect; it also is not intended to restart only the encoder.- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR configuration, keyframe interval, and sustained upload capacity. Lower output demands if the VM’s measured connection cannot maintain the chosen bitrate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube rather than manage a VM and encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud option.
