To stream a 1080p video loop from a Linode VPS, run a video encoder on the server and send its output to YouTube Live using the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room. For H.264, YouTube currently recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 or 12 Mbps at 1080p60, with constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. Before relying on a 24/7 stream, test the feed and check that the VPS has enough outbound bandwidth and monthly transfer allowance for continuous use.
Choose 1080p30 or 1080p60
“1080p” describes resolution, not frame rate. Choose a frame rate the source can sustain and that suits the motion in the video. For a mostly static scene or slow-moving loop, 30 fps may be sufficient; fast motion can benefit from 60 fps. That is a practical choice, not a YouTube rule.

These are YouTube’s recommended ingest settings, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain the output. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Create the YouTube live stream and get its credentials

Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, then select or create a stream key.

Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the actual URL provided in Live Control Room rather than relying on an endpoint copied from an old guide.

Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, public repository, or support message. YouTube documents reusing a custom key and resetting it if it is compromised; see its stream key guidance.
Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it for encrypted ingestion. Use RTMP only if your chosen encoder or setup cannot use RTMPS and you understand the security trade-off. See YouTube’s explanation of streaming protocols and encoder settings.

Configure the encoder on the VPS
Run an encoder on the Linode instance that reads the loop file and sends the resulting live feed to YouTube’s ingest URL. Configure the output to match your chosen resolution and frame rate, and use these YouTube-recommended settings:

- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Video bitrate: 10 Mbps for 1080p30 or 12 Mbps for 1080p60.
- Keyframe interval: two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Ingest: RTMPS where supported, using the URL and key from Live Control Room.
The appropriate encoder configuration and loop/reconnect options depend on the encoder build, operating system, source file, and ingest endpoint. Do not assume that a generic command copied from another setup will loop correctly or recover after a network interruption. Check the documentation for your chosen encoder and validate its behavior in a test stream before relying on it.

Estimate the transfer needed for continuous streaming
A stream sends data out for as long as it runs. The required transfer depends on the actual outgoing bitrate and runtime; a 24/7 stream can consume a substantial monthly transfer pool. Compare your encoder’s configured bitrate with the current network-throughput and transfer terms shown for your specific Linode account and instance before choosing a plan. Current plan allowances, throughput and overage costs are not established here, so check Linode’s current account billing and network-transfer documentation rather than relying on old community-post figures.
The selected instance must sustain more upload bandwidth than the total stream bitrate. Leave headroom for network variation and other traffic instead of treating the YouTube recommendation as a VPS capacity guarantee. YouTube advises checking available upload bandwidth and monitoring stream health: YouTube’s streaming setup guidance. An older Linode community discussion illustrates the concern about transfer use for a 24/7 YouTube stream, but its numerical examples should not be treated as current plan limits or prices.
Test the stream before depending on it

Start with a private or unlisted test stream so you can check the setup before directing viewers to it.

Use representative video movement and audio. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended resolution and frame rate and that the preview looks and sounds right.

Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators for dropped frames, interruptions, or other warnings. If the stream is unstable, compare the encoder’s actual output and the VPS’s available upload bandwidth with the target settings.

Run the test long enough to observe whether the loop repeats as intended and whether the encoder and connection remain stable. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health; see its live streaming guidance.

Keep the content eligible for YouTube Live
Technical delivery does not guarantee that a stream can remain available. Use video, music, and other material you have the rights to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current policies for live streams and monetization. A loop that is technically valid can still be interrupted or restricted if it violates copyright or other platform rules. YouTube’s live streaming guidance covers setup and stream health; review the applicable policy pages in YouTube Studio for your account and content.
