Set your encoder’s output canvas and stream resolution to 16:9, and make sure each playlist video fills that frame without bars already baked into the picture. YouTube’s standard computer player ratio is 16:9; its player adapts to other video dimensions, but it cannot remove black pixels embedded in a source video. Preview and test the entire playlist before going public.
1. Set a 16:9 output resolution
Choose a 16:9 canvas and stream resolution in your encoder. YouTube lists several 16:9 resolutions, including 1920×1080 and 1280×720. Use the highest resolution your source material and encoder can support reliably; selecting a 1080p output does not add detail to a lower-resolution source.
YouTube’s player adapts to videos with other aspect ratios. For the cleanest full-frame presentation on a computer, however, a 16:9 output is the standard target. YouTube’s published 16:9 resolutions also include 7680×4320, 3840×2160, 2560×1440, 854×480, 640×360, and 426×240. See YouTube’s video resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.
2. Check the framing of every playlist item
A 16:9 stream setting controls the frame You send to YouTube; it does not guarantee that every clip fills that frame. Check the actual picture in each source file, particularly if your playlist mixes resolutions or aspect ratios.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Source already 16:9, no bars: It should fit a 16:9 output without added padding. Check that the encoder is not adding borders around it.
- Bars visible inside the source picture: Those are part of the video image. Changing the stream resolution or YouTube player size will not remove them. Reframe or crop the source, or use the encoder’s fill/crop option if available.
- Source has a different aspect ratio: Decide whether to preserve the entire image with unused space, or fill the frame by cropping some of the image. A stretched image may fill the frame, but it distorts the picture.
YouTube’s guidance is to avoid adding padding or black bars directly to the video. Whether your encoder offers fit, fill, or crop—and whether that setting applies per playlist item or globally—depends on the specific software or hardware. Consult its current documentation rather than assuming a control name or behavior.
3. Send the playlist through YouTube Studio
- Prepare the stream in YouTube Studio. Create or open the live stream and locate its stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the general workflow; its live stream settings guidance covers stream keys and the 16:9 recommendation.
- Configure the encoder. Set its output canvas and stream resolution to the same 16:9 dimensions. Enter the stream key in the encoder’s YouTube connection settings. Exact menus vary by encoder.
- Load the playlist and inspect the preview. Check the first item and seek or preview other items, especially those with different framing. Confirm that the picture is not padded, unexpectedly cropped, or distorted.
- Test before going public. If appropriate, use a private or unlisted test and inspect the feed in the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Watch the live preview and stream health, check the audio and video, and review any error messages. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers; that does not correct bars embedded in your source.
YouTube’s live streaming tips also recommend testing, previewing, and monitoring picture and sound. These checks matter for the full playlist: a good-looking first clip does not establish that differently framed items will behave the same way.

4. Why the live stream still has black bars
- Bars are visible in the source file: Crop or reframe the source, or choose fill/crop in the encoder. Output resolution alone cannot remove pixels that are already part of the image.
- A 16:9 clip has new borders around it: Check that the encoder is not adding padding or fitting the clip inside a differently shaped canvas.
- Only some playlist items have bars: Those items may use a different aspect ratio or contain embedded bars. Review each clip’s framing and the encoder’s mixed-source scaling behavior.
- The preview looks right but the live output does not: Compare the encoder preview with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and check that the encoder is sending the intended 16:9 output resolution.
- The picture is cut off or stretched after changing the setting: Review the encoder’s fit/fill/crop choice. Fit preserves the full image but may leave unused space; fill or crop can remove bars by cutting off parts of the picture. Avoid stretching if it distorts the image.
