To run a prerecorded children’s animation channel continuously on YouTube Live from a Linux VPS, prepare a rights-cleared program or playlist, send it to YouTube’s live ingest with FFmpeg, and supervise the process so it can recover after failures. For a single 720p30 program file, FFmpeg’s input-loop options and YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings provide a practical starting point—but neither a VPS nor YouTube guarantees uninterrupted availability.
Choose how the animation will play
The basic pipeline is media file or playlist → FFmpeg on a Linux VPS → YouTube Live ingest. Decide first whether the channel will repeat one finished program or play multiple episodes in a planned order.
| Approach | What it does | What to validate |
|---|---|---|
| One prepared program file | FFmpeg can repeat the same input indefinitely with -stream_loop -1. |
Check that the ending-to-beginning transition is acceptable, audio is continuous, and the file has the intended duration and format. |
| Multiple episodes or clips | A deliberate playlist, concat input, generated program, or playout scheduler determines the order. | Test transitions, timing, and audio continuity. An arbitrary concatenation followed by an infinite loop does not by itself ensure clean, gapless playout. |
Before encoding, inspect every file for missing audio, unexpected aspect ratio or rotation, variable-frame-rate behavior, and streams your FFmpeg build cannot handle. These checks help identify production problems; they do not establish that you own the media or have permission to stream it.
Confirm rights before scheduling
Make sure the channel has appropriate rights to stream each episode, soundtrack, intro, transition, and other included material. A live-stream copyright match or an active copyright strike can lead to restrictions. Do not assume that material being available online—or having permission to watch it—also grants live-streaming rights.

Enable and configure the YouTube broadcast
- Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel.
- In YouTube Studio → Create → Go live, create or schedule the broadcast and open the Live Control Room.
- Use the server and stream settings shown for that broadcast. Copy the current ingest address and stream key from Studio rather than relying on an unknown or stale key.
- Keep the key private. Do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs. Limit access to any service configuration or private files that contain it.
- Decide whether to test privately or unlisted before making the broadcast public. Check the preview and stream-health messages before relying on the feed.
YouTube’s Live API is another option if the operator needs to automate broadcast creation, status changes, stream binding, or audience metadata. Its broadcast resources also expose recording, archive, auto-start, and auto-stop controls. For a simpler encoder-only workflow, create or schedule the broadcast in Studio and use its current ingest settings.
Choose a quality the VPS can sustain
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds and recommends RTMPS for encryption. The figures below are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or uninterrupted delivery. The publication date is not displayed on the reviewed guidance.

| Output example | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | Audio guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 H.264 | 3 Mbps recommended; 2 Mbps minimum | 128 Kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz |
| 1080p30 H.264 | 10 Mbps recommended | 128 Kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz |
Allow outbound capacity beyond the video and audio bitrates for protocol overhead and network variation. The VPS must sustain both the encode workload and continuous egress. Higher resolution or frame rate can require more bitrate and processing capacity; choose based on the visual detail the animation needs and what the VPS can maintain, not simply the largest available setting. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewer playback formats, so you do not need to send a separate encoder output for every playback resolution.
Send one 720p30 program file with FFmpeg
The following is an illustrative H.264 baseline for a source with video and audio. It assumes FFmpeg has been built with libx264, the input can be decoded, and the intended output is 720p at 30 frames per second. Replace the ingest placeholders with the exact RTMPS address and key from the Live Control Room; never publish a working key.

-f flvselects the output format used for this RTMP-family ingest workflow. Confirm the current RTMPS endpoint and key in Studio.
If the source is already 720p30 and correctly framed, you may not need the scaling filter. If it has another frame rate, aspect ratio, or audio layout, adapt and test the command rather than treating this baseline as a drop-in prescription. YouTube advises testing representative movement and audio, then checking stream health and messages.
For a playlist, validate the whole program
Use a tested concat playlist, a playout scheduler, or a generated continuous program for multiple episodes. Confirm that the selected method handles matching codecs, timestamps, duration, and transitions as intended. Test the full sequence, including the transition from the last item back to the first, before leaving it unattended.

Keep FFmpeg running and plan recovery
Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd, configured to start after reboot and restart after an unexpected process exit. Store logs with restricted access, monitor for process exits and YouTube stream-health problems, and decide who will respond to alerts. A restart policy is not proof that the stream is healthy: invalid credentials, exhausted disk, an unreachable ingest endpoint, or a broken source file can make repeated restarts ineffective.
- Keep the source media available locally on the VPS, or explicitly design and test another way for the process to access it.
- Use a private service account and restrict permissions on service files and any files containing the stream key.
- Check VPS CPU, disk, and network use while encoding representative animation. The required VPS size depends on whether FFmpeg encodes or copies media, the output settings, and the host’s limits.
- Decide what recovery means: resume the same program where possible, restart the current file, or move to a new broadcast. Test that behavior, including what happens after a host reboot or temporary network outage.
- Check YouTube’s current stream health and messages rather than treating a running FFmpeg process as proof that viewers are receiving a good feed.
YouTube documents 24/7 feeds as a possible broadcast pattern, including a pattern using an ongoing feed and another broadcast bound to the same stream. That does not establish an account-wide guaranteed duration, a universal archive outcome, or recovery time. Decide how broadcasts, recording, archives, and any API lifecycle controls should work for this channel, then verify the intended behavior in Studio before launch.

Set the audience designation and archive expectations accurately
Animation is not automatically Made for Kids or not Made for Kids. YouTube says creators must designate content accurately based on factors that include intended audience, animated characters, language, songs, stories, and activities; a single factor alone does not settle the classification. Make the decision for the actual channel and its content, taking applicable legal obligations into account.
When a live stream is designated Made for Kids, YouTube disables live chat, chat replay, Super Chat, comments on stream archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may appear. Do not plan on chat engagement or personalized-ad revenue for a stream with that designation.
Check the broadcast’s recording and archive settings before going live. Archive and DVR behavior depends on settings, and the available documentation does not establish a guaranteed archive outcome for every account or a universal maximum broadcast duration.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Check that FFmpeg is running, the RTMPS address and stream key match the current Studio settings, the VPS can reach the endpoint, and the encoder output uses the expected format. |
| Stream connects but has unstable health | Check sustained VPS egress and CPU use. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a sustainable setting, and retest with representative content. Include audio and protocol overhead when assessing network capacity. |
| FFmpeg exits immediately | Read the service log. Check the file path and permissions, FFmpeg codec availability, input streams, filter compatibility, and stream key. Correct the cause before relying on automatic restarts. |
| No audio or an audio mapping error | Inspect the input for an audio stream. The example maps the first audio stream as required; adjust mapping or prepare a valid audio input if the source differs. |
| Picture is stretched, cropped, or bordered | Check source dimensions and aspect ratio against the scaling and padding filters. Adjust the output treatment deliberately and test it in the YouTube preview. |
| Episodes have gaps, jumps, or broken transitions | Validate the playlist or concat method, timestamps, and audio continuity across every boundary, including the loop from the final item to the first. Do not assume a sequence is gapless until tested. |
| Feed does not recover after a restart | Check whether the broadcast is still accepting the stream, whether the key remains current, and whether the configured recovery behavior matches the broadcast lifecycle. Test reconnection and reboot behavior before relying on a long-running channel. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a VPS and FFmpeg process, StreamNeo runs prerecorded videos as a continuous YouTube stream from the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams what you uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the StreamNeo service is available with this monthly option: $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded video rather than going live from a camera.
To start, create a StreamNeo account and try the free first day.
