YouTube Live Stream Outage Alerts: Set Up an FFmpeg Health Check

A reliable YouTube live stream health check watches both FFmpeg’s local progress and YouTube’s receive-side status, then alerts with timestamps and diagnostic details.

Use two independent checks: supervise FFmpeg locally for process exits and stalled progress, and check YouTube’s receive-side stream status and health. Alert on either failure, including its timestamp and the latest YouTube issue details when available. FFmpeg can be running while YouTube is receiving an unhealthy or incomplete stream.

What the health check should monitor

A useful alert distinguishes a local encoder problem from a problem on YouTube’s side. FFmpeg’s process state and progress output tell you whether the encoder is running and continuing to produce updates. YouTube’s API or Live Control Room tells you whether the platform is receiving data and reports stream health. Neither view alone establishes that viewers can play the stream without issues.

  • Local check: Is FFmpeg running, and are fresh, complete progress records arriving?
  • YouTube check: What are the stream’s receive status, health status, and latest reported configuration issues?
  • Alert context: Include when the check failed, which check failed, and YouTube’s latest issue reason or description and timestamp when available.

Set up FFmpeg progress monitoring

Emit machine-readable progress

FFmpeg’s -progress option sends program-friendly progress information to a URL. For a process whose standard output is available to your supervisor, use -progress pipe:1. Progress is emitted as key=value lines; each complete record ends with a progress key whose value is continue or end. Parse complete records and save the arrival time of each one, rather than treating any output from FFmpeg as proof of fresh progress.

The -stats_period option sets the update period. FFmpeg documents a default of 0.5 seconds; that is an output cadence default, not a recommended outage timeout. Set an explicit period if your monitoring design needs one, and make the supervisor’s expected cadence consistent with the actual command and workload.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Track process state separately

Record whether FFmpeg is running and, if it exits, its exit time and status. A process exit and a stalled progress stream are different signals: a running process may stop making expected progress, while an exited process cannot send further records. Alert on either condition that violates your broadcast’s expected state.

There is no universal stale-progress threshold established by FFmpeg’s documentation. Choose one based on the configured progress cadence, input and output behavior, and the delay your operation can tolerate. Avoid setting the threshold equal to a single expected interval if ordinary scheduling or workload variation could produce a temporary gap.

Check YouTube’s receive-side status and health

Automate with the Live Streaming API

The YouTube Live Streaming API’s liveStream.status resource exposes both streamStatus and healthStatus. Documented stream-status values include active (YouTube is receiving data), created, ready, inactive, and error. Interpret them against the broadcast you intended to run: for example, ready is not the same as receiving an active stream.

Health-status values include good, ok, bad, and noData. YouTube defines noData as the live-streaming backend having no health-status information. The health object can also include a last-update time and a list of configuration issues. A good status means there are no configuration issues at warning severity or worse; ok means there are no issues at error severity. Do not treat noData alone as proof of an outage or automatically restart solely on one observation: repeat the check and consider the broadcast context.

API polling is suitable for an automated monitor once you have implemented API access and polling. Authorization details, project quota, polling cadence, and alert delivery depend on the implementation; the reviewed API guidance does not prescribe a universal setup for them.

Use Live Control Room for operator checks

If a person is watching the broadcast, YouTube Live Control Room shows stream health and specific error messages. YouTube says, “You can check your stream’s health and analytics while you’re streaming in Live Control Room.” Its Health Indicator messages include timestamps and instructions. Preserve the message and timestamp in your incident record instead of reducing every issue to “stream down.”

Choose alert conditions and payload

A practical monitor can alert on FFmpeg exit, stale FFmpeg progress, or a YouTube state or health condition that is unexpected for the planned broadcast. YouTube’s issue descriptions can identify problems such as missing audio or video, an unsupported video codec, mismatched primary and backup stream settings, or video ingestion starvation. The latter can be associated with buffering, so an active receive state is not a guarantee of smooth playback for viewers.

Use a short confirmation window or deduplication when transient observations could otherwise generate repeated alerts. The signals are documented by FFmpeg and YouTube; the confirmation window and threshold are implementation choices, not platform-prescribed guarantees.

Test the complete alert path

  1. Start the monitor before relying on it. Confirm FFmpeg is running and that the supervisor receives complete progress records at the expected cadence.
  2. Check YouTube’s side during a test broadcast. Review stream health and messages in Live Control Room or confirm your API monitor reads the intended stream’s status and health fields.
  3. Exercise alert delivery. Send a test notification through the destination your monitor uses and verify it contains useful timestamps and check details.
  4. Test realistic media conditions. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the actual event, then monitoring health and messages during the event.
  5. Review recovery behavior. Ensure the alert tells an operator what failed. Do not make an automatic encoder restart depend only on a single ambiguous observation such as noData.

Common alerting problems and fixes

Symptom Likely interpretation What to check
FFmpeg is running, but no fresh progress records arrive The local progress feed may be stalled or the supervisor may not be reading the configured output. Confirm -progress is configured, the output URL is available to the monitor, and complete records are being parsed. Compare the stale threshold with the configured cadence.
FFmpeg reports progress, but YouTube is not active Local encoder progress does not prove YouTube is receiving data. Inspect YouTube’s stream status, health issues, and Live Control Room messages before deciding whether to restart or correct the stream configuration.
YouTube reports noData The backend has no health-status information; this value alone does not establish an outage. Repeat the observation, check the current stream status and broadcast context, and review the dashboard or latest issue information.
The alert says only “stream down” The notification loses details needed to distinguish a local failure from an ingestion or configuration issue. Add the failed check, observation time, current status, last successful update, and YouTube’s latest issue details and timestamp when available.
Repeated alerts arrive for one intermittent condition Brief observations may be generating duplicate notifications. Consider a confirmation window and incident deduplication, tuned to your acceptable alert delay and monitoring cadence.
YouTube says the stream is active, but viewers report buffering active indicates receipt of data, not uninterrupted viewer playback. Review YouTube’s health messages for issues such as video ingestion starvation. A separate viewer playback check is an additional signal if audience playback health is a requirement.

Choose where the monitor runs

A monitor on the encoder host is simple, but it shares a failure domain with FFmpeg and that host: if the machine or its connection fails, the monitor may fail too. A separately hosted monitor can remain independent of those local failures, at the cost of additional hosting and implementation complexity. YouTube API polling adds a receive-side view that a process-only watchdog cannot provide; polling cadence affects both how quickly a change is observed and the polling load. Live Control Room is useful for an operator reviewing a dashboard, while automated API monitoring requires the operator to implement access, polling, and alert delivery.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that stays live, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an FFmpeg health-monitoring setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube, not camera footage; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start the free day.
