How to Stream a 24/7 Study Music Playlist to YouTube Live with FFmpeg

Prepare a compatible study-music video, loop it with FFmpeg, and send it to YouTube Live. This guide covers setup, settings, rights, archives, and recovery.

You can run a prerecorded study-music playlist as a YouTube Live stream with FFmpeg by preparing compatible video, enabling live streaming on your channel, and sending a real-time H.264/AAC feed to YouTube using the current server URL and stream key. The command below loops one prepared media file indefinitely; it does not, by itself, restart FFmpeg after a crash or guarantee a 24-hour archive. Use only music and visuals licensed for the livestream and any replay.

Before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming: YouTube says it must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  • FFmpeg installed on a computer that can stay powered on and connected for the duration you intend to stream. Check the local build with ffmpeg -version; available encoders and protocols depend on that build.
  • A prepared media file containing both the study visual and playlist audio, such as an MP4. Inspect playback, duration, and transitions before using it unattended.
  • Music and visual rights that cover public live transmission and any replay, plus a reliable upstream connection.

The steps and example settings below use YouTube’s official encoder guidance and FFmpeg documentation available on October 3, 2026. YouTube’s cited help pages do not state publication dates, and labels or platform requirements may change; check the current Live Control Room guidance before going live.

Enable YouTube Live and get the encoder details

  1. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel and complete any verification or activation steps. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement, as YouTube’s help page advises.
  2. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. Set its title, visibility, and other metadata. For an initial check, choose unlisted visibility if appropriate.
  3. Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the current values from Live Control Room; do not reuse an old endpoint on assumption.
  4. Keep the key private. It grants access to the ingest stream: do not put it in screenshots, public repositories, or shared scripts. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg with the replacement.

Prepare the study playlist media

One combined file is the simplest starting point

For the command below, make one compatible file with the visual and audio already together. It can use a static image or a visual loop, but use -tune stillimage only when the picture is static. Review the beginning, middle, and end; confirm the audio is audible, the transitions are intentional, and the file plays correctly before streaming.

When the playlist is separate tracks

Do not assume unrelated audio files can be concatenated seamlessly. Track formats, codecs, sample rates, and stream parameters may differ, and a simple join can produce errors or unwanted gaps. A practical route is to assemble a single media file first, adding the pauses or crossfades you actually want, then test that file end to end. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer is another option, but its inputs must have compatible stream parameters. The official references cited here document looping and RTMP(S) output, not a universal seamless-playlist recipe.

Run FFmpeg and send the stream

Replace the example destination with the ingest URL and secret key from the current YouTube stream. This is an illustrative configuration, not a tested command or a universal bitrate prescription.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i study-playlist.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage -r 30
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY"
  • -re paces a file input in real time rather than sending it as fast as possible. FFmpeg’s RTMP documentation demonstrates this pattern for sending a file to a server. FFmpeg protocol documentation: RTMP.
  • -stream_loop -1 loops the input indefinitely. It must come before the input it applies to: here, before -i study-playlist.mp4. FFmpeg documentation.
  • -c:v libx264 selects H.264 encoding; -c:a aac selects AAC audio. YouTube’s general encoder guide recommends H.264 video, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  • -r 30 sets the output frame rate to 30 fps. -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 set a two-second keyframe interval at that frame rate. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • -b:v 2500k is the example video bitrate, not a universal recommendation. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the artwork and available upload capacity, and check YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for your target output.
  • -b:a 128k -ar 44100 sets example audio encoding to 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube’s cited guide recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 128 kbps stereo audio in the settings it covers.
  • -f flv selects the FLV container used for this RTMP-family output. The rtmps:// destination uses RTMP over a secure connection; YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt data in transit.

FFmpeg applies most options to the next input or output, so keep input-specific options in the correct position. If your build reports that libx264 or RTMPS is unavailable, check its configuration and available encoders and protocols, or use a build that includes them.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended

  1. Start FFmpeg before the planned broadcast and open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  2. Wait for the preview, then check that the visual appears, the audio is audible at a suitable level, and stream health has no unresolved warnings.
  3. Open the watch page using the selected visibility and confirm the viewer-facing stream behaves as intended.
  4. Check upload capacity while the stream is running. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; treat this as preparation guidance, not a guarantee. Other devices or encoders can use that capacity.
  5. Keep a plan for the computer, FFmpeg process, and network. An infinite media loop only repeats the input; it does not restart a crashed process or recover a failed connection by itself.

YouTube recommends a reliable connection and adequate upload bandwidth. Ethernet from the computer to the router can avoid one source of local wireless variability, but it cannot fix insufficient upstream capacity, a poor router, or congestion elsewhere on the connection.

Plan stream length and archives separately

A continuously running broadcast should not be assumed to create one continuous 24-hour replay. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise automatic archiving for a single stream lasting 12 hours or longer. If replay matters, consider scheduled segments shorter than 12 hours, manage the restarts between them, and verify the resulting archives and current YouTube behavior. Copyright and music permissions

You are responsible for obtaining the rights needed to use all live content on YouTube, including music rights involving artists, labels, publishers, public-performance licensing, and other royalty participants. A track being available to listen to, or licensed for a personal video upload, does not establish permission for a continuous public livestream or its archived replay. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility for those rights on the creator: YouTube Terms of Service.

  • Confirm in writing that the license covers livestreaming, your intended territories, the way the stream will be used, and any replay or monetization that applies.
  • Keep license records and correspondence accessible in case you need to show the scope of permission.
  • Ask a rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist when that process applies. YouTube warns that even licensed third-party music can be interrupted if the owner has not allowlisted the channel; allowlisting does not replace obtaining the license.
  • Be prepared for a live match warning: YouTube may require you to stop matched content and can interrupt or terminate the stream if it continues. Copyright or Community Guidelines strikes can also lead to termination. A claim may arrive on an archived stream after it ends.

Using a “study music” label, a credit line, or a link to the artist is not a substitute for the necessary rights.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not show a preview Incorrect or outdated server URL or stream key; stream not enabled; FFmpeg cannot connect. Copy the current URL and key from the correct Live Control Room stream, check channel eligibility and activation, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection error. Reset an exposed or suspect key.
FFmpeg rejects an encoder or protocol The installed build lacks libx264, RTMPS, or another required component. Run ffmpeg -version and inspect available encoders and protocols for that build. Install or select a build that supports the required components.
Video bitrate or stream health fluctuates Insufficient or inconsistent upstream bandwidth, network congestion, or settings too demanding for the connection. Check actual upload capacity and competing network use. Reduce the output resolution, frame rate, or video bitrate as needed, then retest with headroom. A wired connection may help with local Wi-Fi variability but will not increase the internet plan’s upstream capacity.
Audio is silent, distorted, or unexpectedly choppy Problem in the prepared file, incompatible input, unsuitable output audio settings, or a connection issue. Play the source locally, inspect the combined file and its transitions, and confirm the preview audio. Re-encode or rebuild the media with compatible audio before restarting.
The stream stops after FFmpeg exits The loop option repeats media but does not supervise or restart the FFmpeg process. Check the process exit message and connection, then restart the encoder. For unattended operation, arrange independent process and network monitoring and a recovery procedure.
Music is interrupted or the replay receives a claim Rights do not cover the use, a Content ID allowlist step is missing, or a rights holder has made a match. Stop or replace matched material as required, review the license scope, contact the rights holder about allowlisting where relevant, and retain the rights documentation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer and home connection to carry the broadcast, StreamNeo runs a YouTube-only stream from uploaded videos in the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed; you still need rights for the music and visuals you upload.
