Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo start an FFmpeg YouTube stream automatically after a PC boots, save your working FFmpeg command in a script and run that script with Windows Task Scheduler. Choose an At startup trigger to launch before sign-in, or At log on if the video source needs a user session. This automates starting FFmpeg; for a scheduled YouTube stream, an operator may still need to click Go live in YouTube Live Control Room.
Before you automate FFmpeg
Make the existing command work manually first. Confirm that FFmpeg can access its input, connect to YouTube, and produce an incoming preview in Live Control Room. If the command is not reliable when started by hand, Task Scheduler will not fix the underlying problem.
- Use the current server URL and stream key shown for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Use the current endpoint and key rather than an old example copied from a tutorial. YouTube account settings and stream keys are specific to your setup.
- FFmpeg supports RTMP-family output; its protocol documentation includes an FLV-to-RTMP example. YouTube also documents RTMPS, the secure RTMP option. Use the protocol and server address provided for your stream. FFmpeg protocols · YouTube: Ingesting live streams using RTMPS.
There is no single correct FFmpeg command for every stream: the input, codecs, installed FFmpeg build, and YouTube settings determine the necessary options. Preserve the command that already works, including its input and output settings, instead of substituting a generic sample.
Choose the right Windows trigger
| Trigger | When it runs | Best fit | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|---|
| At startup | When Windows starts, before a user necessarily signs in. Microsoft’s ONSTART trigger runs each time the system starts. |
A noninteractive input, such as a local video file, that the selected task account can read without an interactive desktop. | Make sure the account running the task can access the input, FFmpeg executable, and network. A camera, desktop capture, or other interactive input may not be available in this context. |
| At log on | When the selected user signs in. Microsoft documents ONLOGON as a distinct trigger from startup. |
A source or workflow that needs the signed-in user’s session or visible desktop. | It will not start until that user logs in. Verify the task uses the account that can access the needed files and devices. |
Microsoft documents both triggers in its schtasks create reference; the logon trigger is also described in its Task Scheduler logon trigger documentation. The right choice depends on the source and the account’s access, not simply on which option sounds more automatic.

Make a startup script for your known-good command
- Use explicit paths. Put the FFmpeg command in a local batch file or other script. Reference the FFmpeg executable and input files by stable, explicit paths. If the command uses relative paths, set an appropriate working directory in the task or script.
- Disable interactive input. Add
-nostdinto the FFmpeg invocation so a background process does not wait for keyboard input. FFmpeg recommends this option for background operation in its FAQ. Place it among the FFmpeg options before the output, preserving the rest of your working command. - Save and test the script. Run it manually under the account and conditions you expect to use. Check that it reaches YouTube and that the input plays as intended before configuring automatic launch.
Do not assume that a command which works in your interactive terminal will behave identically under another account or working directory. Those details become important when Windows starts the task without your usual desktop session.
Create and test a Task Scheduler task
- Open Task Scheduler and create a task rather than relying on a desktop shortcut.
- In the task’s trigger settings, choose At startup to run when Windows starts or At log on if the input requires the user’s session. UI wording can vary by Windows version.
- Configure the action to run your saved script. Select the account and run context that can read the script, FFmpeg executable, and input, and can reach the network.
- If the script depends on a working directory, set it explicitly in the task’s action settings. Check that paths, permissions, and any required devices are available in the chosen run context.
- Start the task on demand first. Inspect the script’s output or logs and check Live Control Room for an incoming preview and stream health.
- Reboot the PC and confirm that the task starts under the intended trigger and account. Then check Live Control Room again.
Microsoft documents trigger behavior, but there is no universal GUI configuration that suits every source or account. Test the actual PC and task context before depending on it unattended.

Starting FFmpeg is not always the same as going live
Windows can launch the encoder automatically, but that does not guarantee a public broadcast without further action. For YouTube’s scheduled-stream workflow, its encoder instructions say to wait for the preview and click Go live. Check the stream’s current workflow and state in Live Control Room after FFmpeg connects; do not treat an incoming feed alone as proof that viewers can watch.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive rule does not promise continuous uptime or automatic recovery after a power, network, source-device, encoder, or YouTube interruption. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not start after reboot
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The task never starts. | Trigger or task configuration. | Confirm the selected trigger matches the intended event: Windows startup or user sign-in. Run the task manually and inspect its task history or result. |
| The task starts, but FFmpeg cannot find a file. | Account permissions or relative paths. | Use explicit paths, set the working directory if needed, and verify the task account can read the input and executable. |
| FFmpeg waits instead of running unattended. | Interactive standard input. | Add -nostdin and retest the script outside the task. |
| FFmpeg runs, but YouTube shows no preview. | Output URL, stream key, network access, or FFmpeg output configuration. | Check the current URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm the task’s account can reach the network, and compare the output settings with your manually working command. |
| A camera or desktop source works by hand but not at startup. | Source availability in the task’s run context. | Try At log on if the source requires an interactive user session, and confirm that the selected account can access it. |
| A preview appears, but the scheduled broadcast is not public. | YouTube’s scheduled-stream activation step. | Check Live Control Room and follow the scheduled workflow, including clicking Go live when prompted. |
