You can run a continuous YouTube playlist from a Mumbai VPS by sending a compatible video feed to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The basic workflow is to prepare media you have rights to broadcast, configure a YouTube stream, run an encoder and playlist process on a Linux server, then supervise it and monitor YouTube’s stream health. Plan for bandwidth as carefully as compute: even a 3 Mbps stream uses about 972 GB over 30 days, before overhead.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- A Linux VPS in Mumbai with enough disk for your source media and adequate monthly outbound transfer for your chosen bitrate.
- An encoder and playlist process configured to send a continuous feed to YouTube Live.
- Videos and audio you are legally entitled to broadcast. A video being publicly viewable on YouTube does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it.
This is a do-it-yourself server workflow. It requires a process supervisor, logs, monitoring and a recovery plan; YouTube’s official guidance does not validate a specific FFmpeg command or guarantee unattended recovery.
Estimate bandwidth before choosing a VPS
For a continuous stream, outgoing traffic depends on bitrate and runtime. The following are arithmetic estimates for 30 days, before protocol overhead or other server traffic; they are not provider statistics.
| Video bitrate | Approximate traffic per day | Approximate traffic per 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Mbps | 32.4 GB | 972 GB |
| 6 Mbps | 64.8 GB | 1,944 GB |
| 8 Mbps | 86.4 GB | 2,592 GB |
Allow headroom for protocol overhead and anything else using the VPS connection. If you send multiple feeds, their bitrates add to the transfer total. A plan’s advertised transfer allowance may also differ by region, so check the Mumbai-specific terms rather than relying on a headline plan figure.

Choose a VPS with Mumbai transfer terms in mind
AWS Lightsail
AWS Lightsail’s pricing page displays Linux/Unix bundles with public IPv4 at $5 per month with 1 TB transfer, $7 with 2 TB, and $12 with 3 TB. AWS states that plans in Mumbai include half the displayed transfer allowance, making those respective Mumbai allowances 0.5 TB, 1 TB and 1.5 TB. Both inbound and outbound traffic count toward the allowance; AWS charges only excess outbound transfer. At the listed Mumbai allowance, the $12 bundle’s implied 1.5 TB is enough for the estimated 972 GB of a 3 Mbps stream over 30 days before overhead and other usage, but not the estimated 1,944 GB for 6 Mbps. These are figures displayed on AWS’s page in 2026; verify the current price and regional terms when purchasing. See AWS Lightsail pricing.
DigitalOcean
DigitalOcean describes Droplets as VPS instances. Its plans start at $4 per month, with included outbound transfer starting at 500 GiB per month depending on plan; its bandwidth documentation lists excess Droplet outbound transfer at $0.01/GiB. The reviewed official pages do not establish a Mumbai region, so do not assume this is a Mumbai-location option. Compare more than the monthly price
- Confirm that the provider offers the Mumbai region you need and establish the regional outbound transfer allowance and overage terms.
- Check CPU and RAM against your encoding mode. Transcoding can be CPU-heavy; the available figures here do not establish that a particular small VPS can handle it reliably.
- Ensure disk capacity fits the source files, operating system and logs.
- If your source media already matches the desired YouTube ingest format, a lower-compute workflow may be possible, but test it rather than assuming a particular plan will work.
Configure YouTube Live and its ingest settings
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. If live streaming is not enabled on the channel, start activation early; YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Copy the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: keep it private and rotate it if exposed.
- Use RTMPS if available. YouTube recommends it as a secure extension of RTMP.
- Choose a supported video codec and audio format. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 for video, AAC or MP3 for audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as recommended advanced settings.
- Choose a bitrate appropriate to your resolution and frame rate, and ensure the VPS upload connection can sustain it.
YouTube’s currently listed recommended H.264 bitrates include:
| Output | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or upload at that rate. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the exact codec and configuration you select; its table includes minimum and recommended ranges. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast.

Run and test the playlist on the VPS
- Install and configure an encoder on the Linux VPS, then arrange for it to read your entitled source media as a playlist or loop and send the output to YouTube’s server URL with the private stream key. Exact commands depend on the encoder, input files and chosen output format; no specific command is established here.
- Before making the broadcast public or leaving it unattended, check the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Test the picture, audio, playlist transition and selected output bitrate. Confirm that the stream remains stable through a transition, not just during the first clip.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the encoder’s output logs while the test runs. Fix warnings before relying on the feed.
- For unattended operation, use an operating-system service manager or equivalent process supervisor with restart behavior configured. Set up log retention, disk monitoring and alerts so a failed process or a filling disk is visible.
YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, according to its encoder guidance; do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for longer broadcasts. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming preview in Live Control Room | Whether live streaming is activated; whether the encoder has the right server URL and stream key; whether the VPS can reach the ingest endpoint. | Verify activation and copy the current URL and key from the selected stream. Check encoder logs and network connectivity. If the key was exposed, rotate it. |
| Stream health reports instability or dropped frames | Whether the VPS can sustain the chosen bitrate and whether the encoder is using the selected output settings. | Review YouTube’s health messages and encoder logs. Test at a bitrate the connection can sustain; allow for traffic overhead and other VPS usage. |
| Picture or sound is missing or wrong | Source-file playback, selected codec, audio format and encoder output. | Test the full source and playlist locally or in a private/unlisted live test, then inspect the incoming preview and audio before publishing. |
| The playlist stops after a clip or the process exits | Playlist/loop configuration and process logs. | Correct the playlist behavior and configure a process supervisor to restart the encoder. Confirm restart behavior in a controlled test. |
| VPS transfer is exhausted or costs rise | Actual stream bitrate, accumulated runtime, other outbound traffic, regional allowance and overage billing. | Compare observed usage with the bitrate-based estimate, reduce bitrate only if picture needs permit, or choose a plan with adequate Mumbai transfer and clear overage terms. |
Or let it run in the cloud
