Use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play an ordered playlist of local gaming clips, then send OBS’s output to YouTube Live. For 4K at 60 fps, YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 35 Mbps for H.264, or 10–40 Mbps for AV1/H.265, with CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. Test the complete setup before the event: the figures are ingest guidance, not a guarantee that every viewer will receive a 4K60 rendition.
What you need
- OBS Studio, configured to send a live encoder feed to YouTube.
- VLC installed alongside OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source can play multiple media items as a playlist; install the VLC version with the same architecture as OBS—for example, 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
- Local highlight video and audio files that you have permission to broadcast. Check that each clip plays and that the soundtrack is audible before going live.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so do not leave activation until event day. See YouTube’s live encoder setup guide.
A dedicated encoder, capture card, camera, or microphone is not required for a playlist of local files. OBS and VLC can handle playback and encoding on the same computer, but its ability to encode your particular footage should be established with a representative test rather than assumed.
Set up the playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. Match their architectures so OBS can use VLC.
- In OBS, create or select a scene for the broadcast. In the Sources dock, add VLC Video.
- In the source properties, add the highlight files in the order you want them to play. Enable looping if you want the playlist to repeat; OBS documents looping on and shuffling off as the defaults. Leave shuffle off for a planned sequence, or enable it only if you want clips in a variable order.
- Show the source in the scene and verify that playback continues. Listen to the soundtrack and check that clips do not unexpectedly appear silent, cropped, or at an unsuitable size.
- Play enough representative footage to assess both motion and audio. Fast gameplay, transitions, and the loudest portions of the soundtrack are useful checks before committing to a long broadcast.

Create the YouTube Live event and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, schedule a live stream if you want an upcoming watch page that can be promoted. YouTube says a scheduled stream may also appear in subscribers’ feeds.
- Set the event’s title, description, visibility, and audience in Studio. Choose the audience setting accurately for the content; do not treat it as a technical encoding option.
- Open the encoder setup for the stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube describes the key as the credential that allows an encoder to send its feed, so keep it private: do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it with anyone who should not control the stream.
- Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS connection where available. Confirm that OBS is connected to the intended event before starting the public broadcast.
Exact Studio screens can change, but the required connection details remain the server/stream URL and the stream key shown in the encoder setup. If the key is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS before broadcasting.

Configure OBS for 4K at 60 fps
Set the OBS video output to 3840 × 2160 and 60 fps if your source, encoder, and computer can sustain that output. For encoder bitrate and keyframes, use YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance as the reference:

These are settings for the feed YouTube receives. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions, so sending a 4K60 feed does not guarantee that every viewer will be offered or receive 4K60 playback. Do not use HDR settings just because the stream is 4K: configure HDR only when the source footage and encoder genuinely support HDR. For ordinary SDR highlights, keep the workflow SDR.

There is no universal upload-headroom multiplier or computer specification established for every creator and clip set. Test the actual upload connection and encoding load with representative footage, and use YouTube’s stream-health feedback rather than relying on a generic hardware or bandwidth promise.
Preflight, start, and finish the stream
- Use a private or unlisted test when appropriate. Test clips with representative movement and the full audio path, not only a static title card.
- YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours ahead of the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. This gives you time to check the Live Control Room preview and resolve problems before viewers arrive. See YouTube’s live-stream tips.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the incoming preview, audio, and stream-health messages before starting the event for viewers.
- While live, monitor OBS and YouTube’s stream health. If the feed becomes unstable, address the encoder or upload connection before assuming the viewer’s playback problem is caused by YouTube.
- When the broadcast is over, stop the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. For streams at or beyond that duration, do not assume an archive will be available; check YouTube’s current guidance before planning around a recording.
YouTube Live Redirect can send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream after a broadcast. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says creators sending a redirect need more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes. Details are in YouTube’s Live Redirect guide.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for gaming highlights
Only include gameplay footage, music, commentary, and other audio you have the right to broadcast. A game’s soundtrack or a song captured in a clip can raise a rights issue even when the gameplay itself is yours. The specific rights for a particular game, clip, or music track cannot be determined from the playlist setup alone; check the relevant rights and permissions before streaming.
Do not assume that looping a playlist makes it exempt from YouTube’s rules. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel policies for the material and format you plan to publish, and respond to any notices shown in Studio. This setup guide cannot determine whether a particular collection of clips qualifies under those policies.

Troubleshooting common problems
