How to Use HLS Video Files in a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Playlist

YouTube Live HLS requires an encoder to send a rolling playlist and segments to its HTTPS ingest endpoint. Learn the 4K60 format, bitrate and setup requirements.

You can use HLS source material in a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream only by routing it through a compatible encoder or playout system that sends a live, rolling HLS feed to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. You cannot paste a static .m3u8 file into YouTube and publish it as a live playlist. YouTube’s HLS workflow is for ingesting continuously updated media playlists and segments.

What “HLS playlist” means for YouTube Live

In YouTube Live, an HLS playlist is part of the stream sent by an encoder: it points to successive media segments and is updated as the live stream proceeds. It is not a viewer-facing YouTube playlist, nor a file-upload feature for a finished HLS package. YouTube’s documentation does not define one universal file-to-live workflow or certify arbitrary third-party playlists.

If you already have HLS files, use a compatible encoder or playout workflow to read or generate the source and deliver the required rolling HLS output to YouTube. The encoder must be able to send HLS to YouTube’s provided HTTPS ingest URL; a static playlist alone does not do this.

What you need before setting up HLS ingest

  • A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live and a stream key created in Live Control Room.
  • An encoder or playout system that supports YouTube HLS output. YouTube lists OBS among encoders supporting HLS output; confirm the settings available in your installed version before relying on a particular workflow.
  • A source and sustained upload connection capable of the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate.
  • For the HLS ingest format: H.264 or HEVC video, one AAC audio track, M2TS multiplexing, a closed GOP and a frame rate no higher than 60 fps. [Google for Developers: HLS ingestion]

How to set up HLS ingest in YouTube Live

  1. Create the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Create a live stream and its stream key. Select HLS as the stream protocol, then copy the HTTPS stream URL YouTube provides. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  2. Configure the encoder for YouTube’s HLS endpoint. Enter the HTTPS stream URL and stream key in the encoder’s YouTube HLS destination fields. If you intend to stream HDR, YouTube says to leave manual resolution unchecked. Follow the encoder’s own instructions for how it combines or assigns the URL and key; do not assume every encoder uses the same field layout. [YouTube Help: Set up an HLS livestream]
  3. Send a rolling playlist and segments. The encoder must continuously update its playlist and send TS media segments over HTTPS, using POST or PUT requests. Byte-range delivery is not supported, and the playlist must have no more than five outstanding segments. Use HTTPS only.
  4. Set compliant media packaging. YouTube’s HLS setup instructions require TS segments. The HLS ingestion guide specifies M2TS muxing, H.264 or HEVC video, a single AAC audio track and closed GOP. These statements describe related but distinct requirements: use TS segments, with the stream muxed as M2TS. YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Keep segments about one to four seconds where practical, and never exceed five seconds. [Google for Developers: HLS ingestion]
  5. Choose 4K60 bitrate by codec. Set 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps only if the source and connection can sustain it. YouTube’s current settings table recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 at 4K60, with a 14 Mbps minimum; for AV1 or H.265/HEVC it recommends 35 Mbps, with a 10 Mbps minimum. These are YouTube recommendations and minimums, not a guarantee that a particular network or encoder will deliver reliably. Match the bitrate to the actual codec and test sustained upload capacity with headroom. [YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions]
  6. Start the encoder and verify the incoming stream. Start sending the feed, then check Live Control Room for stream health and confirm the received resolution and frame rate. Test with representative motion and audio before an important broadcast; YouTube transcodes live input into viewing formats, so check the resulting viewer quality as well as the encoder output. [YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions]

4K60 HLS bitrate and latency

Codec at 2160p/60 YouTube minimum YouTube recommendation
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps

Choose the row matching your actual encoded video. A high target bitrate does not compensate for an unstable uplink, an encoder that cannot sustain the workload, or a source that was not produced at 4K60.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

HLS is usually a poor fit when the lowest possible interaction delay is the priority. YouTube Help explains: “HLS has higher latency because it sends segments of video, instead of a continuous stream like RTMP.” YouTube disables ultra-low latency for HLS, and its encoder settings guidance classifies 4K/2160p as normal latency. YouTube recommends RTMPS for general streaming and identifies HLS as an option for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP; choose based on codec and latency needs rather than assuming HLS is always preferable. [YouTube Help: Set up an HLS livestream] [YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions]

Troubleshooting HLS ingest

YouTube does not receive a signal

  • Check that HLS, rather than RTMP/RTMPS, is selected for the stream and that the encoder is pointed at the HTTPS URL from the matching Live Control Room stream.
  • Verify the stream key has no transcription errors and belongs to the intended stream.
  • Confirm the encoder is actively sending playlist updates and segment requests using HTTPS POST or PUT. Static files hosted elsewhere are not a push to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.

The stream is rejected or unstable

  • Check the required packaging and codecs: TS segments, M2TS muxing, H.264 or HEVC video, one AAC track, closed GOP and no more than 60 fps.
  • Keep segments no longer than five seconds and the rolling playlist to at most five outstanding segments; do not use byte-range delivery.
  • Reduce bitrate or resolution if upload capacity is inconsistent. For 4K60, compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s codec-specific figures, then test the sustained connection rather than relying on a speed-test peak.

The stream appears late or below expected quality

  • Some delay is expected with HLS; it sends segments rather than a continuous stream, and ultra-low latency is unavailable for this protocol.
  • Check the incoming signal’s actual resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate in Live Control Room. Viewer playback may differ because YouTube transcodes live input into output formats.
  • Test a representative scene, including fast motion and audio, before the event so packaging, network and output issues can be found in advance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel built from uploaded videos rather than a camera-based live production, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded-video playback to YouTube, not live camera input. Start the free day.
