You can stream a looped video from a Synology NAS to YouTube Live with Docker only if the NAS and the container can sustain the required 4K/2160p at 60fps encode and your internet connection can continuously upload it. The setup needs three parts: a video file the container can read, an encoder that produces a YouTube-compatible video and audio stream, and YouTube’s ingest address and stream key. YouTube publishes recommended ingest settings, but those settings do not establish that any particular Synology model can encode this workload. Test your exact NAS, DSM release, container, file, and connection before relying on it.

What this setup does—and what it does not guarantee

A Docker-based loop sends a video file from storage on the NAS through an encoder/container to YouTube Live. The NAS must do more than store the file or run containers: the chosen setup must read the media, encode it at the selected format and frame rate, and upload continuously at a sufficient rate.

Do not confuse this with Synology Surveillance Station’s documented Live Broadcast feature. Synology documents that as a camera-source broadcast to YouTube and states that it supports H.264. It is not documentation for looping a local file from Docker, nor a promise of 4K60 support on Synology hardware.

The official platform settings below describe what YouTube accepts and recommends; they are not a benchmark or compatibility list for NAS models. The available official material does not establish a universal Synology Docker image, compose file, or model-level recipe for this workload. Treat container-specific instructions as dependent on the image and NAS you actually choose.

Check the 4K60 requirements before configuring Docker

Match the bitrate to the ingest codec

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists these 4K/2160p at 60fps ingest rates. The H.264 values are different from the AV1/H.265 values, so use the row for the codec your encoder will actually send.

Video codec sent to YouTube Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 10 Mbps 35 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, not measured requirements for a specific NAS. They refer to video bitrate; allow additional headroom for audio, network variation, and other traffic. A connection that reaches the target only in a brief speed test may not sustain it for a continuous stream.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API lists 2160p and 60fps as valid inbound stream properties and supports RTMP, including RTMPS. Those values describe the stream configuration; setting them does not convert a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate source into genuine 4K60.

Check the rest of the stream format

  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Rate control: YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Audio: Use an audio stream in a documented supported format, such as AAC or MP3. A video-only output can trigger stream-health issues.
  • Transport: Prefer RTMPS. YouTube recommends it because it encrypts data into and through Google’s servers.
  • Latency: YouTube says 4K streams are set to normal latency rather than the low-latency option.

See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and the LiveStreams API documentation for the platform’s current settings and stream-health indicators.

Validate the Synology NAS and Docker container

Before you build the loop, identify the exact NAS model, DSM version, and Container Manager or Docker release you will use. Container availability and menus vary by software release; do not assume that the ability to run containers means the device can encode 4K60 continuously.

  1. Confirm the media is accessible. Check that the container can read the source video and its audio from the NAS storage location. Confirm file permissions and the path as seen from inside the container, not just from DSM.
  2. Check the encoder’s actual capabilities. Establish whether the selected container can produce 3840×2160 at 60fps in the codec you intend to send, and whether it can access any hardware encoding facility you plan to rely on. Do not assume hardware acceleration is available or usable by the container without verifying it for your model and software.
  3. Measure sustained upload capacity. Compare the connection’s stable upload performance with the YouTube bitrate for your selected codec, leaving room for normal variation and other household or office traffic.
  4. Verify the output format and audio. Ensure the encoder can provide the required resolution, frame rate, CBR, keyframe cadence, and compatible audio—not merely pass through a file with a “4K” label.
  5. Check secure ingest support. Confirm that the container can send to the RTMPS address supplied for your YouTube stream.

These checks are validation steps, not claims of compatibility. If your NAS cannot sustain the encode, a separate encoder may be a better fit; compare the actual device’s sustained 3840×2160-at-60fps output, codec, bitrate, RTMPS, audio and keyframe support, and measured upload capacity. No NAS model or external encoder is established here as a guaranteed solution.

Configure the loop and send it to YouTube

  1. Choose a container for file-based live output. Select an image whose own documentation explains how it reads a local file, repeats or plays a playlist, encodes the desired output, and sends it to YouTube. Image names, environment variables, volume mappings, and compose syntax are implementation-specific; use that image’s instructions rather than copying a generic command that may not apply.
  2. Make the source available to the container. Map the media folder into the container using the image’s documented volume configuration. Check read permissions and test that the container can open the precise file and audio track you intend to stream.
  3. Set the encoder output. Configure 3840×2160 at 60fps and select one codec/bitrate pairing from YouTube’s table above. Set CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio as supported by the chosen encoder. Confirm that the output is truly 4K60 rather than relying on source-file metadata alone.
  4. Set up the YouTube ingest. In the channel’s live setup, obtain the current ingest URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS endpoint where available. The YouTube API describes the ingest information as an address and stream name; some tools accept them separately, while others combine them as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the selected container’s documented format.
  5. Protect the stream key. Treat it as a password: do not publish it in a compose file, screenshot, log, or public repository. Store it only in the configuration mechanism you trust, limit access to that configuration, and reset the key through YouTube if it is exposed.
  6. Start with a representative test, not an unattended run. Run the loop long enough to expose read, encode, and upload problems. YouTube explicitly advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Inspect stream health for bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, keyframe/GOP, and audio issues before leaving the setup running.

YouTube can report problems such as an open GOP, an overlong keyframe interval, an unsupported video codec, missing audio, or insufficient video input. Its API documentation describes stream-health indicators; use the live stream’s health status to diagnose the output rather than assuming a running container means a healthy broadcast.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 loop failures

What you see Likely area to check What to do
YouTube reports insufficient video input or the stream does not reach 2160p/60fps. The source, encoder output, or NAS capacity. Check the container’s input path and the encoder’s actual output resolution and frame rate. Confirm the NAS can sustain the encode; a container starting successfully does not prove it can keep up.
Bitrate warnings, buffering, or an unstable broadcast. Upload capacity, competing traffic, or an output bitrate above what the connection can sustain. Check sustained upload under realistic conditions, account for other traffic, and retest using the appropriate codec-specific YouTube bitrate. Do not treat a short peak as continuous capacity.
YouTube flags keyframe, GOP, or open-GOP problems. Encoder GOP/keyframe configuration. Set a two-second keyframe interval and ensure it does not exceed four seconds; disable open GOP if the encoder exposes that setting and YouTube reports it as an issue.
The stream is rejected for an unsupported video codec. The encoder’s output codec does not match the intended ingest format. Check the codec actually being sent, then configure a YouTube-supported output. Recalculate the bitrate using the matching codec row.
Picture appears without sound, or YouTube reports missing audio. Source audio selection, container access, or encoder audio output. Confirm the chosen file has the intended audio track, that the container can read it, and that the output includes AAC or MP3 audio.
The loop stops or the container cannot open the file. Volume mapping, file permissions, path, or image-specific loop configuration. Verify the mounted path from inside the container, grant the needed read access, and follow the image’s documented file/playlist repeat settings.
YouTube does not accept the connection or the stream key fails. Ingest URL, key, or endpoint formatting. Retrieve the current URL and key from the channel’s live setup, confirm whether the tool expects separate fields or a combined address, and check that RTMPS is configured as intended. Never reuse a key exposed in a log or public config.

Keep the loop eligible and safe to broadcast

A technically valid encoder configuration does not grant rights to the video or audio. Use media you own or have permission to stream, and check that any music, gameplay footage, artwork, or other included material is cleared for the intended YouTube broadcast. Copyright claims or restrictions can interrupt or limit a stream even when the Docker and ingest setup is working correctly.
