First check whether the cloud VM is running, then confirm that the encoder restarted and is sending to YouTube with the current stream URL and key. A maintenance reboot, an encoder that failed to start, a rejected key, and an ingest or network problem are different failure points; use the VM event logs and YouTube Live Control Room status to identify which one occurred before changing settings. The location of the operator in India does not by itself indicate an India-wide network problem.
Recover the stream in this order

Check the VM and its event history
Open the cloud provider’s console and confirm whether the VM is running, stopped, or still recovering. Review instance events and reboot logs around the interruption time. Use the provider’s own status and log views because the cloud provider is not specified here.
For Google Compute Engine specifically, Google’s reboot troubleshooting guide distinguishes system events from user or service-account actions and recommends inspecting logs, including method and principal fields. A reboot initiated inside the guest operating system might not have a comparable Cloud Audit Logs method. These are Google Cloud details, not assumptions about another provider.

Check whether the encoder is running
If the VM is reachable, inspect the streaming application and determine whether it is running, stuck, or exited. Restart the encoder process or its configured service if needed, using the procedure for your operating system and software. Then inspect its output or logs for connection, authentication, and encoding errors. There is no safe universal restart command without knowing the encoder and OS.

Reconnect with the current YouTube settings
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and the settings for the relevant stream. Confirm the stream URL and key in the encoder, then start the encoder. YouTube notes that previous stream settings may load an earlier key; if the key was reset or rejected, copy the current one from the Stream tab and update the encoder. Treat the stream key as a password and do not post it in logs or support screenshots. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Read the Live Control Room health message
Wait for the preview and health state to update, then read the timestamped error rather than guessing at the cause. YouTube’s streaming error guidance includes “Incorrect stream format”; for that specific error, YouTube calls for H.264 video and AAC audio. Do not change formats unless the actual error or encoder configuration points to that problem.

Check outbound network and ingestion if the VM and encoder look healthy
Confirm that outbound connectivity from the VM works, the configured ingest server is correct, and the stream key is current. YouTube’s general streaming network guidance recommends available upload capacity of about 20% above the stream’s total bitrate. That is general guidance, not an India-specific threshold or proof that the incident is caused by the local network.

Check both the public watch page and the control room
Verify what viewers see and whether Live Control Room reports an active encoder feed. A viewer playback complaint alone does not establish that the encoder stopped; likewise, a reconnect does not prove the live event or archive continued without a gap. YouTube’s encoder workflow does not promise that an arbitrary outage resumes the same event seamlessly.

Use the evidence to narrow down the cause
Do not settle on a root cause until the VM events, encoder output, and Live Control Room status agree. These are the main possibilities to distinguish:
- VM unavailable: It did not restart, is still recovering, or cannot be reached.
- Encoder did not start: The VM restarted, but the streaming application did not launch with the operating system.
- Encoder is sending the wrong feed: It restarted with a stale URL or key, or its logs report an encoding problem.
- Ingest or connectivity failure: The VM and encoder appear healthy, but outbound access or the connection to YouTube is failing.
- Playback-only report: Viewers have trouble, but the encoder feed remains active in Live Control Room.
What a maintenance reboot means on Google Cloud
If the VM is on Google Compute Engine, maintenance behavior depends on the instance configuration and support for live migration. Google says most supported instances are set to live migrate during host maintenance, an approach intended to keep the instance running with minimal disruption. Google describes typical minimum disruption during live migration as much less than one second; that statement applies to supported live migration, not every reboot or this particular stream.

Some configurations do not support live migration or are set to stop during maintenance; those instances may stop and optionally restart. Check the VM’s host maintenance and restart behavior in its configuration and consult Google’s host maintenance guidance. Google says Persistent Disk and Hyperdisk data persist through instance restarts under its host-event guidance. For an incident, use the reboot logs and event documentation rather than inferring the cause from the word “maintenance” alone.

Make restart behavior deliberate
Confirm the provider’s supported maintenance and automatic-restart settings for the actual machine type. On Google Compute Engine, Google documents an compute.instances.automaticRestart event that can follow a host error or a terminateOnHostMaintenance event when automatic restart is enabled; consult the provider’s documentation and event logs for the circumstances that apply to your VM.

Start the encoder automatically after boot
Configure the encoder to launch after the operating system starts, using a service manager or process manager appropriate to that OS and software. Test it with a planned restart: confirm the VM returns, the encoder starts without a manual login, and Live Control Room receives the feed. The configuration itself is software- and OS-specific.
Test a backup encoder or failover
A backup helps only if it can take over as intended. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then verifying that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. Test before relying on failover during an outage.
Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a 24/7 run
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 stream is therefore beyond that guidance. If preserving a recording matters, keep a local recording or another verified recording plan; YouTube also recommends a local archive backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
