You can play an ordered playlist of local video files to YouTube Live from a headless Linux PC by feeding an FFmpeg concat-demuxer input to a 2160p60 encoder and sending it to YouTube over RTMPS. The difficult parts are not the playlist syntax: the PC must encode the files at the intended output settings, sustain the upload bitrate, and recover safely if the process or connection fails. Treat the setup below as a plan to validate on your own machine, not as a guaranteed command—FFmpeg builds, media files, and available encoders differ.
This guide assumes you mean files stored on the Linux PC and that you own or are authorized to stream them. Rebroadcasting an existing YouTube playlist is a different workflow; this guidance does not establish permission to retransmit its videos.
What you need before configuring the stream
- A headless Linux PC with the video files available locally and enough CPU or supported hardware-encoding capacity for the chosen codec and 2160p60 output.
- An FFmpeg build with the input and encoder features you intend to use. Available encoders depend on the build, drivers, and hardware.
- A stable outbound internet connection with measured upload capacity sufficient for the stream bitrate plus headroom.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live Control Room, where you can create or schedule the broadcast and retrieve its RTMPS ingest URL and stream key.
- Files you own or are authorized to broadcast. YouTube’s technical acceptance of a stream does not grant rights to its audio or video.
The source files need not all be 2160p60, but the output setting cannot create detail or motion that a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate source does not contain. If sources vary in codec, audio layout, dimensions, frame rate, or duration, test them as a playlist; you may need to normalize or transcode them before reliable playout.
Choose the output settings and test your upload
YouTube’s published encoder settings accessed October 3, 2026 specify 2160p60. For that output, its recommended bitrate is 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, with a 10 Mbps minimum; for H.264, the recommendation is 50 Mbps, with a 14 Mbps minimum. These are YouTube’s published guidance, not a promise that a given connection or encoder will sustain the stream successfully. YouTube advises choosing a quality your connection can reliably support and testing upload capacity. YouTube’s encoder settings

| Setting | Guidance for 2160p60 |
|---|---|
| Video codec | AV1, H.265/HEVC, or H.264 are listed by YouTube. Compare compatibility, encoding performance, and available upload capacity. |
| Bitrate | AV1 or H.265: 35 Mbps recommended, 10 Mbps minimum. H.264: 50 Mbps recommended, 14 Mbps minimum. YouTube’s published settings accessed October 3, 2026. |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate). |
| Keyframes | Two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds. |
| Frame rate and size | Set 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps for a 2160p60 target. AV1 at 3840 × 2160 and above requires at least two tile columns. |
| Audio for RTMP/RTMPS | AAC or MP3; YouTube lists 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 Kbps stereo audio. |
| SDR color | YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. |
| Ingest | YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption. It also accepts HLS, subject to different workflow requirements. |
Measure upload, not download. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate; if you send a backup stream, include its bitrate too. In its guidance, YouTube puts it plainly: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Use a speed test, then confirm the real encoder’s stream health during a representative test. YouTube streaming tips
At 4K, YouTube does not offer its low-latency optimization option: 4K streams use normal latency. HDR is a separate configuration, not just a color toggle on this SDR recipe. YouTube’s HDR guidance specifies HEVC and an HLS workflow; HLS uses short transport-stream segments and a rolling playlist and has higher latency than RTMP. Consult the relevant specifications before attempting HDR or HLS. YouTube’s encoder settings YouTube HLS ingestion guidance

Create an ordered local playlist for FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file of media entries and demuxes the files sequentially. Create a playlist file such as playlist.txt, with one entry per file in the exact order you want to broadcast:
file '/srv/videos/part-01.mp4'
file '/srv/videos/part-02.mp4'
file '/srv/videos/part-03.mp4'
Use valid paths and ensure the Linux account running FFmpeg can read both the list and every media file. The concat demuxer expects compatible streams for straightforward concatenation. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps, but warns that different stream durations can create gaps. Test transitions, particularly when files have different codecs, frame rates, audio layouts, or durations; incompatible inputs may call for a normalized/transcode workflow instead. Decide how the playlist should end
Choose explicitly whether the broadcast stops at the final file or repeats. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping and -re as reading input at its native frame rate. Those options can inform an implementation, but they do not guarantee that every concat playlist will loop as intended in every build and media combination. Validate the exact behavior on the deployed machine before leaving it unattended. FFmpeg command-line documentation
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
- Create the broadcast: In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream. Open its stream settings and select the RTMPS connection details provided there.
- Keep the key private: Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. Set up your encoder for YouTube Live
- Configure the encoder: Point FFmpeg at the concat input, select an encoder actually available in your FFmpeg build, and set the resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings described above. Configure RTMPS as the output. YouTube documents the ingest requirements, but the exact FFmpeg arguments depend on the encoder, input streams, and build; no single untested command is reliable for all headless Linux systems. YouTube’s encoder settings
- Run a private or unlisted end-to-end test: Start the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm that the video and audio play, the reported resolution and frame rate are as expected, and transitions between representative files work.
- Test failure and recovery: Before an unattended run, test what happens after a network interruption and after an FFmpeg process restart. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring reliability, but restart and reconnect behavior depends on your local supervisor and encoder configuration. YouTube streaming tips
Make the headless setup maintainable
A headless PC removes the need for a monitor, not the need for operations planning. Decide how you will start the encoder, observe its logs and YouTube stream health, and respond if it exits or loses connectivity. A service manager or other supervisor can restart a failed process, but configure and test it deliberately: a restart policy alone does not prove that the stream reconnects cleanly or resumes at the desired place in the playlist.

YouTube lists FFmpeg among software encoders and describes OBS as open-source and available at no charge. OBS may suit a workflow that needs a production interface or sources beyond straightforward file playout, but these instructions do not establish a particular GUI-free OBS setup for headless Linux. YouTube also lists hardware encoders, including NVIDIA options; that does not establish that a specific GPU supports your required codec, Linux driver, or sustained performance. | Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports an unstable or unhealthy stream | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or the encoder bitrate is too high for the connection. | Measure outbound upload, retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the total bitrate, and test at the intended codec and bitrate. Lower the target if needed and verify stream health again. YouTube streaming tips |
| Output is not actually 2160p60 | Encoder output settings or source properties do not support the intended output. | Check the encoder settings and Live Control Room report. Scaling a smaller source or duplicating frames does not create original image detail or motion. |
| Playback has a pause, gap, or broken transition between files | Files have mismatched stream properties or durations, or concat timestamp adjustment exposes a gap. | Test each transition; check codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layouts, and durations. Normalize incompatible media where needed. FFmpeg notes that differing stream lengths can cause timestamp gaps. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation |
| Playlist plays once but does not repeat as expected | Looping was not configured or the deployed FFmpeg build/input arrangement handles the loop differently than expected. | Verify the intended loop behavior with the exact playlist and build. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for infinite input looping, but test it in context. FFmpeg command-line documentation |
| Stream stops after a brief connection loss or process exit | Reconnect behavior or local process supervision is not configured or has not been validated. | Simulate a connection interruption and process restart during a test broadcast. Confirm how the encoder, supervisor, and YouTube ingest behave before relying on the setup unattended. |
| Audio is absent, distorted, or out of sync | Input audio streams differ, the chosen output audio settings are wrong, or a file lacks the expected track. | Inspect every source and the encoded preview; check the configured audio codec, 44.1 kHz stereo format, and 128 Kbps stereo bitrate recommended for RTMP/RTMPS. |
Rights and YouTube channel considerations
Only broadcast material you own or are authorized to use. Copyright permission, platform rules, and monetization eligibility depend on the specific content and circumstances; a playlist’s technical compatibility does not answer those questions. YouTube may also assess a channel’s reused content separately from whether a live stream can be ingested. Review the rules that apply to your channel and content before scheduling a long-running broadcast. YouTube channel monetization policies
